Stack configur ation 51 Cascade up stack configuration Regardless of stack configuration, the follo wing applies: • When pow er is applied to the stac k the base unit initializes , typically within 60 seconds, and the entire stac k powers up as a single logical unit.
52 Nor tel Ether net Routing Switch 2500 Series stacking This automatic f ailov er is only a temporar y saf eguard. If the stack configuration loses po wer , the temporar y base unit cannot power up as the base unit when power is restored. Also , if the or iginal unit rejoins the stack, it cannot resume base unit status.

Auto Unit Replacement 55 A TTENTION A UR is intended for a stac k configuration of two or more units. In a two-unit stack configuration, if a unit fails, the remaining unit becomes a standalone switch. A UR loads the configuration of the failed unit in the replacement of ERS 2500 Ser ies unit if the failed unit was a non-Base Unit.

Auto Unit Replacement 57 Adding a unit In a stack that does not hav e any INA CTIVE CFG mirror images, adding a ne w unit causes the CFG image of the new unit to be mirrored in the stack.

70 System configuration software f eatures The host names f or ping and T elnet cannot be longer than 63 alphanumeric characters, and the def ault DNS domain name cannot be longer than 255 characters. Configuring with CLI Y ou can use the CLI to configure the DNS client.
Switch management features 71 • BootP or Last Address A TTENTION Whenev er the switch is broadcasting BootP requests, the BootP process ev entually times out if a reply is not received. When the process times out, the BootP request mode automatically changes to BootP Disabled mode .
72 System configuration software f eatures If an IP address is not currently in use, these actions take eff ect immediately . If an IP address is currently in use, these actions take eff ect only after the s witch is reset or power cycled. BootP Disabled This option lets you manage the switch by using the IP address set from the console ter minal.
Switch management features 73 Configuration File Download/Upload The Configuration Management feature lets you store and retr ie ve the configuration parameters of an Ethernet Routing Switch 2500 Ser ies to a TFTP ser ver .

Other features 79 Asymmetric mode This mode lets the link par tner send flow control pause frames to the GBIC por t. When a pause frame is received, the receiving por t suspends transmission of frames for a number of slot times specified in the control frame or until a pause-release control frame is received.
