Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section helps yo u to quickly start using your device. Under standing This User Manual The sections o f this manual ge nerally follow the fe atures of your device. A robust index for features begins on page 166.
6 Batter y Y our device is powered by a rechargeable, standard Li-Ion battery . Note: The batter y comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the battery before using your device for the first time. After the first charge, you can use the device while charging.

8 T ask Manager Y our device can run applicat ions si multaneously and some applications run in the background. Use T ask Manager to see which applications are running on your device and to end run n ing applications to extend batter y life. Y ou can also uninstall applications from your devi ce and see how much memory is used by applica tions.

The day , date, and time also display . 2. T ouch and sweep across the screen, either to the left or right, as indicated on the screen.
Getting Started 11 Android System Reco ver y Android System Recovery is used for Google updates. The avera ge user should never need to perform a system recovery . Note: If you entered this menu by mistake, use the Volume Up/Down key to select reboot system now , then touch the Home Key .

Understandin g Y our Device 15 Home Screen The Home screen is the starti ng point for using your dev ice. Note: Unless stated otherwise, instructions in this User Manual start with the device unlocked, at the Home screen. 1. Status Ba r : Presents icons to sho w notifica tions, ba tter y power , and connection details.
16 Extend ed Home Screen The Home screen consi sts of the Home pane l, plus six panels that extend beyond the display wi dth to provide more space for adding shortcuts, widgets, and folders. Slide your finger horizont ally across the screen t o scroll to t he left or right side panels.

18 Pinch Use two fingers, such as your inde x finger and thumb, to make an inwa rd pinch motion on the screen, as if you are picking something up, or an outward motion by sweeping your fingers out. For example: • Pinch the Home screen to s how customization options.
Understandin g Y our Device 19 • Au to rota tion : T ouch to enable or disable auto rotation. When enabled, the screen orientation changes when you rotate the device. When disabled, the screen loc ks in the current orientation (horizontal or vertical) and the orientation does not change w hen you rotate the device.
20 Google T alk Invitation : Someone has i nvited you to chat using Google T alk. Refresh : An account is being refreshed. Alarm Set : An alarm is active. For more information, refer to “Clock” on pa ge 89. Silent Mode : All sounds ex cept media and alarms are silenced, and Vibrate mo de is not active.

Applications that you do wnload and inst all from the Android Market or from the web are also added to the Applications screen. Y ou can place shortcuts to applic ations on the Home screen for quick access to the applica tion.
26 Downloads : Files, apps, and other items yo u download in Browser , Gmail, Email, or in other ways, are st ored on your tabl et’ s internal sto rage. Use the Do wnloads app to view , reopen, or delete what you have downloaded. For more in formation, refer to “Downloads” on page 91.

Entering T ext 29 Section 3: Entering T ext This section describes how to en ter words, letters, punctuation and numbers when you need to enter te xt. Vir tual QWERTY Keyboard Y our device uses a virt ual QWERTY keyboard for text entry .

Entering T ext 31 • Accented characters : Just glide through the letters of the word. Swype usually recog nizes the word and correctly accents the letters. • Error correction : If you make a mistake, double-tap on the word you want to change. Conf iguri ng Swype Configure Swype to your preferences.
32 Editi ng Keyboar d The Editing Keyboard provides a qui ck way to move the cursor and highlight text. If the applic ation in which you are work ing supports editing, you can cut, co py , or paste highlighted text. T o display the Editing Keyboard: 1.
Entering T ext 33 Entering Upper and Lo wer Case Letter s The default case is lo wer case (abc). Enter upper and lower case alphabet letters by touching the Shift ke y to toggle the case, before to uching the le tter key(s) .
34 5. Continue typing your message . XT9 mode can be used in portrait or landscape mode. Editing T ext Y ou can edit the text you ente r in text fields by cu tting, copying, or pasting text .

36 4. Use your finger tip to write out each character . 5. When you write single letters, suggestions are offered in the Letter Options area. The suggested letter appears in blue. If that suggestio n is incorrect, touch one of the other letters. Hand writ ing Ti ps • For up percase letters, write the letter larger than the lowercase le tters.
Entering T ext 37 • T ext Input Mode : For Ha ndwriting box 2, the current mode is displayed in the lower left corner of the handwritin g area. T ouch the T ext Input Mode key to activate alphabetic ( ABC ), numeric ( 123 ), or symbols ( ?#+ ) mode.
38 Section 4: Contacts and Account s This section explains how to ma nage contacts and accounts. Accounts Y o ur device can synchronize with a variety of accounts. With synchronization , information on yo ur device is updated with any information that changes in your accounts.
Contacts and Accounts 39 Setting Up a Facebook Account Note: Y ou must register your device with your social networking site before using the device to access the network. 1. From a Home screen, touch the Menu Key ➔ Settings ➔ Accounts and sync ➔ Add account ➔ Facebook .

42 Get Friends Use the Get Friends feature to sync with your accounts. Y ou can choose an account you have al ready added or add a new account. Fo r more information about se tt ing up accounts on your device, see “Setting Up Y our Accounts” on page 38.
Contacts and Accounts 43 Sendin g a Nameca rd ( vCar d) Y ou can send contact namecards as vCards by way of Bluetooth to other Bluetooth de vices or in an Email or Gmai l as an attachment. Note: Not all Bluetooth devices accept contacts and not all devices support transfers of multiple contacts.

62 Latitude With Google Latitude, you can see th e location of all of yo ur friends on a map or on a list. Y o u can also share or hide your locati on. Y o u must first set up your tablet to use wireless networks to help pinpoint your location. Also, Lati tude works best when Wi-Fi is enabled.

Note: The screen view icons are a three-way toggle. The icon that is displayed, is the mode that appears after the icon is touched.
