2 1 About this Guide This guide provides instruction s on how to use Ex press Setup to initially config ure your Catalyst switch. Also covered are switch management options, basic installation procedures, port a nd module connections, and troubleshooting help.

4 3 Running Express Setup When you first set up the switch, you should use Expr ess Setup to enter the init ial IP information. This enables the switch to connect to local routers and th e Internet. Y ou can then access the switch through the IP address for further configuration.
5 Step 7 Connect a straight-through Category 5 Ethernet cable (not provided) to any 10/100 or 10/100/1000 Ethernet port on the switch front panel and to the Ethernet port on the PC. Step 8 V erify that the LEDs on both Ethernet ports are green. Step 9 W ait 30 seconds.
6 Step 12 Enter this information in the Network Settings fields: • In the Management Interface (VLAN ID) field, the default is 1 . Enter a new VLAN ID only if you want to ch ange the management in terface through w hich you manage the switch and to which you assign IP information.
7 Refreshing the PC IP Address After you complete Express Setup, yo u should refresh the PC IP address. For a dynamically assigned IP addr ess, disconnect the PC from the switch, and reconnect it to the network. The network DHCP server will assign a new IP add ress to the PC.
8 Downloading Cisco Network Assistant Cisco Network Assistant is a free software prog ram that you download from Cisco.com and run on your PC. Network Assistant offers advanced options for configuring an d monitoring multiple devices, including switches, switch clusters, switch stacks, routers, and access points.
9 5 Installing the Switch This section covers switch installation and port co nnections. For additional installation and ca bling information, refer to the Catalyst 2940 Switch Hardware Installation Guide on Cisco.
10 Installation Warning Statements This section includes the basic installatio n warning statements. War n in g T o prevent the switch from o v erheating, do no t operate it in an area that exceeds the maximum recommended ambient temperature of 113°F (45°C).
11 Installing the Switch on a Desk or Wall T o place the switch on a desk without using the moun ting screws, simply attach the four rubber feet on the bottom panel of the switch. T o install th e switch on top of a desk, under a desk, or on a wall, use the mounting template and three moun ting screws.
12 Installing the Switch Using the Magnet Mount Follow these steps: 1. Position the magnetic panel on the mounting surface. 2. Place the bottom of the switch on the magnetic panel.
13 Connecting to the Switch Ports This section describes how to connect to the fixe d switch po rts and to the SFP module port. For additional cabling information and a list of supporte d SFP modules, refer to the hardware installation guide on Cisco.
14 Install and Connect to SFP Module Port Y ou can use either the 100BASE-FX port or the SFP mo dule slot, but not both at the same time. By default, the 100BASE-FX port is active if an S FP modul e is not installed in the switch at startup.
15 6 In Case of Difficulty If you experience difficulty , help is available here and on Cisco.com. This section includes Express Setup troubleshooting, how to reset the switch, how to access help online, and where to find more information.
16 Resetting the Switch This section describes how to reset the switch by rerunning Express Setup. These are reasons why you might want to reset the switch: • Y ou installed the switch in your network and cannot connect to it because you assigned the wrong IP address.
17 Follow these steps: 1. Open your browser , and go to http://ww w .cisco.com/. 2. Click T echnical Support . 3. Click Product Support > Switches > Catalyst LAN and A TM Switches > 2940 Series Switches > T roubleshooting . 4. Click the subject that addresses the p roblem that you are experiencing.
