The follo wing diagram shows the main status lights on the front of the notebook.

The first time you turn on your notebook, the W indows Setup program runs automatically and includes opportunities to customize your setup.

4–2 R eference Guide Modem and Network C onnections To C o n n e c t t h e M o d e m Ä CAUT I ON: Y our built -in modem may not w ork w ith multiple phone lines or a pr ivat e branch e x change (P BX). It cannot be connected to a coin-operat ed telephone and does not wor k with party lines.
Modem and Network C onnections Refe renc e Gu id e 4– 3 Spec ial Restric tions in C ertain C ountries ■ Many countries impose a black out period after a modem repeatedly fails to connect to a service pro vider . The number of failed attempts and the period you must wait before trying again dif fer from country to country .
4–4 R eference Guide Modem and Network C onnections To C h a n g e Y o u r M o d e m S e t t i n g s The modem is already set up to be compatible with telephone systems and modems in most areas. Ho weve r, in some situations, you may hav e to change modem settings to match local conditions.
Modem and Network C onnections Refe renc e Gu id e 4– 5 Connec tin g to a Local Area Netw or k (LAN) Y ou can connect to local area ne tworks (LANs). LANs gi ve you access to network resources, such as printers and f ile servers on your corporate network, and possibly to the Internet.
4–6 R eference Guide Modem and Network C onnections Using a Wireless L AN Ad apter (Selec t Models O nly) Y our notebook model may include a wireless local area network (WLAN) adapter . A WLAN adapter enables your notebook to connect to a compatible wireless network access point or to another , compatible, wireless-enabled notebook.

Add-On D ev ices Refe renc e Gu id e 5– 5 Using Dual Dis pl ay Mode Y ou can extend your desktop by connecting an e xternal monitor to your notebook. 1. Select Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Themes > Display . 2. Select the Settings tab .
5–6 R eference Guide Add-On D ev ices To C o n n e c t a 1 39 4 D e v i c e (Selec t Mod els Onl y) If your notebook has a 1394 port (also kno wn as FireWire), you can use it to connect de vices such as audio and video equipment, disk dri ves, printers, and other notebooks.
Add-On D ev ices Refe renc e Gu id e 5– 7 Installin g Additional R AM (Mem or y) The notebook has 2 slots that hold 2 RAM modules. At least one slot contains a RAM module installed at the factory . Y ou can use both slots to expand your RAM. T o Install a RAM Expansion Modul e Use only PC2100 DDR-266-MHz or higher RAM.

6–2 R eference Guide T roubleshooting Audio Problems If No Sound I s Audib le ■ If your model has a volume control, press the + (plus) b utton to increase the volume. ■ Select the speaker icon on the taskbar (if present). Clear the Mute all check box if selected .
T roubleshooting Refe renc e Gu id e 6– 3 CD-ROM and D VD Problems If Y ou Cannot Boot from a CD or D VD ■ Make sure the CD or D VD is bootable. ■ Make sure the CD-R OM/D VD dri ve is selected as the boot de vice. See the “Basic Operation” chapter in this guide to change the boot sequence.
6–4 R eference Guide T roubleshooting If th e Notebook C annot Read a CD or D VD ■ For a single-sided CD or D VD, make sure the disc is placed in the dri ve with the label facing up. ■ Clean the disc. ■ W ait 5 to 10 seconds after closing the tray to giv e the notebook time to recognize the disc.

6–10 Re ference Gui de T roubleshooting Modem Problems If th e Modem Seems Slow ■ Excess static or noise on a line reduces the ov erall transmission speed of the modem connection. If necessary , contact your telephone company about f ixing this type of problem.
T roubleshooting Re ference Gui de 6–11 If th e Modem Dials In correctly ■ Check the telephone number you entered, including any digits required for outside access or long distance. ■ In Control Panel, open Phone and Modem Options. Check the dialing options—look for duplicate digits for outside access or long distance.
6–12 Re ference Gui de T roubleshooting If th e Modem Dials , B ut Y ou Cannot H ear It ■ If your model has an audio mute light, make sure it is turned of f. If it is on, press the audio mute button. ■ Check the speaker v olume setting. ■ In Control Panel, open Phone and Modem Options, then select the modem and select Properties.
T roubleshooting Re ference Gui de 6–13 If th e Modem C lic ks Repeatedly , But Does Not Connec t ■ Make sure you are using an an alog telephone line (2, 3, or 4 wires). Y ou must not use a digital line. In a hotel, ask for a data line. ■ Check all cables and connections.
6–14 Re ference Gui de T roubleshooting If a PC Card Modem Is N ot W orking Disable the internal modem: 1. Open the hardware De vice Ma nager . Select Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System. 2. Select Modem to list the current modem de vices.
T roubleshooting Re ference Gui de 6–15 If th e Notebook Stops Respondin g ■ Press ctrl+alt+del and use T ask Manager to end the application that is not responding. ■ Press the po wer button for at le ast 4 seconds to turn of f and reset the notebook.
6–16 Re ference Gui de T roubleshooting ■ Make sure you are using only the A C adapter included with your notebook (or other approv ed adapter that meets the po wer requirements of the notebook). Do not use a 60-watt, 3.16-amp adapter . ■ Mov e the notebook away from an y nearby heat source.
T roubleshooting Re ference Gui de 6–17 If th e Notebook Does Not En ter Standby Mode as Expected ■ If you hav e a connection to another computer , the notebook will not enter Standby if the connection is acti ve. ■ If the notebook is performing an operation, it normally waits for the operation to finish before going into Standb y .
6–18 Re ference Gui de T roubleshooting Serial , P arallel and U SB Problems If a Serial Mouse Does Not W ork ■ Make sure you follo wed the manufacturer’ s installation instructions completely and hav e installed the mouse properly . If not, repeat the procedure.
