8 user’ s guide Check with your ISP for spec ifics on your connec tion. Before you can connect to the Inter net an d send or receive e-mail a nd faxes using telephone dial-up, you must connec t your telephone s ervice line to the modem, which is inside the PC.
setting up your pc 9 1 Plug one end of a mode m cable ( D ) into the modem connector ( A ) on the back of the PC ( C ). This connector may be labelled with either Line or a modem connector symb ol. 2 Plug the other end of t he cable ( D ) into the telephon e line socket ( E ) on the wall.
10 user’ s guide To connect the Ethernet c onnector to the network: 1 Plug the netw ork cable into the E thernet connector ( A ) on the back of the PC. WARNING: Do not plug the telephone service line cable or modem cable into the Ethernet connector.

12 user’ s guide standby mode When the PC is in standby mode, it goes into a low-power state, a nd the monitor is blank as if it is turned off. The ad vantages of using standby mode include: • Y ou save time and electricity witho ut having to wa it for the PC to go t hrough the normal startup routine when you wake it agai n.

Click an item on the left of the message to view information about y our PC, including: • Locations of drives and connectors o n the front of the PC chassis.
18 user’ s guide To copy an item: 1 Right-click the item. 2 Select Create Shortcut . The s hortcut appears in the folder . 3 Drag the item into the All Programs list or into another folder . If you use Add or Remove Prog rams in the Control P anel to delete a software program, the shortcut in All Programs may not be removed.
learning the basics 19 NOTE: The wireless mouse goes into a sleep or suspend mode after 20 minutes of inactivity. Click a button on the mous e to wake it. (Moving the wireless mouse does not wake it.) The mouse has two or three buttons on the top. • Click the left mouse b utton to position the c ursor or to select an item.

Some keyboards do not have the Int ernet buttons shown here at the top of the keyboard, and some use a differe nt layout on the top right.

learning the basics 23 wireless keyboard set A wireless keyboard ( B ) uses a receiver/transmitter unit ( A ), instead of a connector cable, to communi cate wi th your PC. The wireless keyboard, mouse ( C ), and receiver s et is available with s elect models only.
24 user’ s guide function keys The function keys, locate d above the ma in k eys, are labelled F1 through F12. • Pressing F1 displays a Help window for the software pr ogram being used. • Pressing F3 displays a search window . F1 and F3 are available at all times.

64 user’ s guide The virus-scanning progra m manufacturer provides free virus scan updates through your Internet connection for an initial period after your PC purchase. You can purchase a su bscription service for updates after the i nitial free period expires.

Slide the access panel back (2) about 1 inch (2.5 cm), and then lift it up and off the unit. removing the pc access panel on the S0000 series model WARNING: Beware of sharp edges inside the chassis.
90 user’ s guide 8 Remove the front bezel by following t he appropriate method for your PC model. • T o remove the front bezel from the S0 000 series model, gently pry the top section (1) of the bezel away from the cha ssis.

upgrading and ser vicing the pc 95 6 For an 8000 series diskette drive, squeez e inward on both sides of the bracket brace, and lift the brace up and out (1) . Remove the two sets of s crews (2) (left and right sides) that secure the drive to the drive adapter .
96 user’ s guide replacing or adding a drive The steps to replace or add a drive ar e the same for both the S0000 and 8000 series, except when you ar e replacing a di skette drive on the 8000 series, or the 7-In-1 memory card reader on the S00 00 series.
