INTRODUCTION The 3M ™ Dynatel ™ 2210E Cable Locator consists of a T ransmitter and a Receiv er f or locating buried cables or Activ e Duct Pr obes (sondes). It also can be used to identify cables or pairs using a Dyna-Coupler plugged into the Recei ver jack.
INITIAL RECEIVER CONFIGURA TION Display depth units (inches, feet and inches, or centimeters) may be changed while holding and pressing . For each press, one of three units will display . T o change the passiv e Power frequency , press and hold then press to toggle between 50 or 60 Hz as displayed in the lo wer left corner of the display .
TRANSMITTER BA TTER Y TEST T o test the Batter ies, hold do wn and listen to the tone (solid tone=good; beeping tone=lo w; no tone=replace batteries). Note: The battery test indicates battery condition for normal output levels. If the unit r esets w hen the high output level is selected, use the normal output level or r e place the batteries.
Make sure the T ransmitter is of f. Plug the direct connect cable into the front panel jack. Connect the Black clip to the ground rod. Place the ground rod in the earth perpendicular to the suspected cable path. If necessary , extend the black lead with the Ground Extension Cable.
Page 6 Connect the Dyna-Coupler to the T ransmitter front panel jac k using the coupler cable. Clamp the Dyna-Coupler around the cable belo w any bonds just before the cable enters the earth. The jaws of the coupler m ust fully close. Press to apply T racing signal and select the 33 kHz frequency .
Page 7 Induction Method Place the transmitter on the ground over the tar get cable with the lid hinge in line with the cable path. Press to turn the transmitter on and select the 33 kHz frequenc y . LED indicates the frequency selection. For greater tracing range, select high output le vel by pressing .

Press to select the 50/60 Hz po wer frequency (see section on Selecting P assi ve P ower F r equencies P age 9) or LF for passive locating; otherwise, select the same frequency as the T ransmitter .
Page 9 About T race Modes P eak: In this mode, as the antenna crosses the cable, the Receiv er speaker v olume increases to a maximum and the bar graph fills from both sides to ward the mid dle. As the antenna moves of f the cable path, the speaker v olume decreases and the bar graph opens.
Page 10 DETERMINING CABLE DEPTH AND CURRENT Place the Receiv er Antenna on the ground directly above the cable with the handle parallel to the path. Press and the display will indicate the cable depth and relati ve current . Current is displayed in the lo wer left corner of the display .
Page 11 LOCA TING EMS MARKERS EMS markers may be detected and located using either the 3M Dynatel ™ 2205 or 2206 EMS Marker Locating Accessory . T o a ttach the accessory , slide the Receiv er horizontally into the EMS Marker Locating Accessory mounting slot.
Page 12 CABLE OR PAIR IDENTIFICA TION T ransmitter Setup T ransmitter setup is the same to identify cables or pairs. Howe ver, Receiver setups are dif ferent. Perform a battery test; then, connect the Dyna-Coupler to the T ransmitter front panel jack using the coupler cable.
