1-4 GENERAL INFORMA TION INTROD UCTION This manual describes all models in the Agilent E361xA 60W Bench Power Supply family and unless stated otherwise, t he information in this manual applies t o all models.
1-5 b e g rounded or the power suppl y can be operated float- in g at up to a maximum of 240 V olts o f f g round. T otal out- put voltage to g round must not exceed 240 Vdc. LINE FUSE Line V oltage Fuse Agilent Part No. 100/ 1 15 V ac 2.0 A T 2 1 10-0702 230 V ac 1.
1-6 T able 1. Specifications and Operati n g Characteristics (Cont’d) *REMOTE PROGRAMMING SPEED Maximum time required for output volta g e to chan g e from initial value to within a tolerance band (0.1%) of the new l y pro g rammed value followin g the onset of a step chan g e in the pro g rammin g input volta g e.
1-7 e. Replace th e cover and mark the sup ply clearly wi th a t ag or label ind icating the co rrect line voltage and fuse th at is in use. Figure 2. Line V ol tage Selecto r (set for 1 15 V ac) Power Cord T o protect oper ating personnel, the instrument should be grounded.
1-8 that the current limit value can be set from zero to maximum rated value. OPERA TING MODES The settin g of the rear panel switch determines the operatin g modes of the power suppl y .
1-9 REMOTE OPERA TING MODES Remote operatin g modes discussed below are remote volta g e sensin g and remote volta g e pro g rammin g . Y ou can set up the unit for remote operatin g modes b y chan g in g the settin g s of the rear panel switch and connectin g the leads from the rear panel termi- nals to the load or the external volta g e.
1-10 pl y above 100% rated output. Limit y our pro g rammin g volta g e to 10 Vdc. Remote Pro g rammin g Connections. Remote pro g rammin g requires chan g in g settin g s of the switch and connectin g external volta g es to + and - terminals of "CV" or "CC" on the rear panel.
1-11 Settin g V olta g e and Current. T urn the slave unit's CURRENT control full y clockwise. Adjust the master unit's controls to set the desired output volta g e and current. The master suppl y operates in a completel y normal fashion and ma y be set up for either con- stant volta g e or constant current operation as required.
1-12 AUTO-SERIES OPERA TION Auto-series operation permits equal or proportional volta g e sharin g , and allows control of output volta g e from one master unit. The volta g e of the slaves is determined b y the settin g of the front panel VOL T AGE control on the master and volta g e divider resistor .
1-13 Remote Sensin g . T o remote sense with auto-series operation, set SENSE switch of the master unit and set SENSE switch of the slave unit to remote.
1-14 LOAD CONSIDERA TIONS This section provides information on operatin g y our suppl y with various t y pes of loads connected to its output. PULSE LOADING The power suppl y will automaticall y cross over from constant- volta g e to constant current operation in response to an increase (over the preset limit) in the output current.

A-2 series pass transistors. Whenever the output volta g e is below the slopin g V1 line, the control circuit inhibits four SCRs and the input capacitors char g e to a volta g e determined b y N1. Fi g ure A-2 indicates the windin g s that are connected as a result of the other volta g e decisions.
A-3 a . Perform turn-on checkout procedure g iven in pa g e 1-7. b . Perform the CV and CC Load Re g ulation perfor- mance tests g iven in the followin g para g raphs respectivel y . PERFORMANCE TESTS The followin g para g raphs provide test procedures for verif y- ing the power suppl y 's compliance with the specifications of T able 1.
A-4 CONST ANT VOL T AGE (CV) TESTS CV Setup. For all CV tests set the output current at full rated output to assure CV operation. The onset of constant current can cause a drop in output volta g e, increased ripple, and other performance chan g es not properl y ascribed to the con- stant volta g e operation of the suppl y .
A-5 Fi g ure A-5. Load T ransient Response Time W aveform P ARD(Ripple and Noise) Definition: P ARD is the Periodic and Random Deviation of the dc output volta g e from its avera g e value, over a specified bandwidth and with all other parameters maintained constant.
A-6 a. Connect the test equipment as shown in Fi g ure A-7. b. T urn the suppl y 's power on and turn CURRENT con- trol full y clockwise. c. T urn up output volta g e to the full rated value. Check that the suppl y 's CV indicator remains li g hted.
A-7 e. Record output volta g e across Rs and convert it to current b y dividin g this volta g e b y Rs. f. Adjust autotransformer to the hi g h line volta g e (127 V ac for nominal 1 15 V ac, 1 10 V ac for nominal 100 V ac, and 253 V ac for nominal 230 V ac).
A-8 Ammeter and CC Set Calibration T o calibrate ammeter and CC set, proceed as follows: a. Connect test setup on Fi g ure A-9. b. T urn VOL T AGE and CURRENT control full y clock- wise. c. T urn on the suppl y and to calibrate ammeter adjust R5 on the displa y board until front panel AMPS dis- pla y reads exactl y DVM value divided b y Rs.
A-9 After the trouble has been isolated to one of the feedback loops, troubleshootin g can proceed as described in T a bles A- 4, A-5, or A-6. Series Re g ulatin g Feedback Loop. When troubleshootin g the series re g ulatin g loop, it is useful to open the loop since measurements made an y where within a closed loop ma y appear abnormal.
A-10 SYMPTOM CHECKS AND PROBABLE CAUSES Poor Load Re g ulation (Constant V olta g e) a. Refer to "Measurements T echniques" para g raph. b. Check +10 V reference volta g e. c. Ensure that the suppl y is not g oin g into current limit. Poor Load Re g ulation (Constant Current) a.
A-11 STEP ACTION RESPONSE PROBABLE CAUSE 4 Check volta g e from pin 13 to pin 12 of U9. a. Measured volta g e is positive. b. Measured volta g e is ne g ative. a. Check U9A is defective. b. Check U10 and U9D is defective. Check R85 is open. 5 Check volta g e from pin 6 to pin 5 of U9.

1-10-1 Voltage and Current Programming of the E3614A/15A/16A/ 17A with a Voltage and Current Source Remote analog voltage programming permits control of the regulated output voltage or current by means of a remotely varied voltage or current. The stability of the programming voltages directly affects the stability of the output.
1-10-2 Programming V oltage Common to the Minus Output Figure 2 Set the CV switch down on the rear panel, and all others up. V in = 1/A x V out V out = A x V in Where V out is the power supply output voltage. V in is the programming voltage. A is the gain factor and the values of each model are as below .
1-10-3 Programming V oltage Common to the Minus Output Figure 4 The output will always be the same or less than the programming voltage. The M/S2 switch must be in the down position.
1-10-4 Constant Current Mode The E3614A/15A/16A/17A may be programmed for constant current with an analog voltage or current. Constant current with analog voltage programming can only be achieved with a voltage source that is common with the positive output terminal.
1-10-5 Figure 6 Set the CC switch down, and all others up. I in = 1/A x I out I out = A x V in Where I out is the power supply output current in amps. I in is the programming current in µ amps. A is the gain. Programming currents can be increased by adding a resistor across the CC+ and CC-.
1-10-6 Voltage and Current Programming of the E3614A/15A/16A/17A with Resistors Remote programming with resistors permits control of the regulated output or current by means of a remotely varied resistor . The sum of the resistance of external programming resistors (R1 + R2) should be more than 40 kohm.
