8 SECTION 3: TRACTOR SET-UP Attac h ing the Batt er y Cab les The p ositive b attery terminal i s mark ed P os. (+). The negative battery t erminal is marked Neg. (–). • The positive cable (heavy red wire) is secured to the positive battery terminal (+) with a hex bolt and hex nu t at the f actory.

10 Throttle C on trol Lever The throttle control lever is loc ated on the left side of the tractor’s dash panel. T his lever c ontrols the speed o f the engine. W hen set in a give n position, the throttle will maintain a uniform engine s peed. See Figure 4.
11 Hour Meter Located i n the center of th e tractor’s c ons ole, the ho ur meter ope rates wheneve r the engine i s running and records the actual hou rs of t ractor operation. See Fig ure 6. 12 Seat Adjustme nt Lever To ad just the seat forward or backward, s lide the seat adjustment lev er to the left and rep osition the s eat to the d esired pos ition. Once a c omfortabl e pos ition is found, release th e sea t adjustment lever to lock the seat i n place.

14 • Briefly depress the brake pe dal to release t h e parking brake. Move the throttle lever into the FAST (rabbit) position. • To trav el F ORWARD, slowly depres s th e upper portion of t he drive pedal forward un ti l t he des ired spee d is a chieved.
15 Movin g The T ract or Manua lly Your tractor’s transm ission is equipped with a hydrostatic relief valve for occasions when it is necessary t o m ove the trac tor manua lly. O pening this valve permits the fluid in the trans mission to bypas s its normal route, al lowing the rear tires to "freewheel.
16 Mulching Model 151 5 & 1 517 law n tractors com e equipped with a mulch kit which incorporat es spe cial blades , alrea dy standard on your tractor, in a proc ess of recirculating grass clippings repe atedly beneath the cu tting dec k. The ultra-fine clippings are then force d back i nto the lawn whe re t hey act a s a na tural f ert ilizer.
17 Troub leshoot ing If engin e troub les are experienced that appear to be fuel s ystem rel ated, chec k th e following areas before adjusting t he c arburetor. • Make su r e the f uel tank is filled with clean, fresh gaso line. • Make s ure the fuel tank c ap v ent is not blo cked and that i t is ope rating properly.
18 • Locate t he t wo lock nuts o n the opposite side of the stabilizer b racket. S ee F igure 14. Ti ghten the loc k nuts to raise the front o f the deck; loosen the loc k nuts to lower the front of the deck. • Retighten the t w o j am n uts loosen ed earlier wh en proper a djustmen t is achieved .
19 Figu re 17 NOTE: Threading the bal l joints too far onto the d rag links will cause t he front tires to "toe-i n" too fa r . P r o per toe-in is bet ween 1/ 16" and 5/ 16". Front tire t oe-in can be mea sured as follows: • Place the steering wheel in posit i on for st raight ahead t ravel .
20 • A llow t he engine a few minutes to rest after opera- tion. This will give the oil time to drain into the crank - case sump and result in a m ore a ccurate dipstick reading. • Clean the area around t h e oil f ill cap/dipstick to pre- vent deb r is fro m entering the crankcas e.
21 • Grasp the side pan el just behi nd the grille and pul l outward to release t he side panel from the tap ered bu sh ings o n th e grille . • Slide t he side p anel forward and out of the groove in t he da sh p anel. Draining the Oil Run t he engin e for a few minutes t o all ow the oi l in the cra nkca se to w arm up.
22 Air Filter The engine is equipped with a replaceable, high den sity paper air cleaner elem ent and an oiled, foam precleaner which su rrounds the paper element . S ee Figure 21. Alwa ys exam ine t he air clea ner bef or e starting th e eng ine. Che ck for a buildup of dirt and debris around the air cleaner sy stem .
23 NOTE: Refer to the Atta chments & Accessorie s table found on page 32 of this ma nual for t he proper spark plug t ype. • Lift t he tractor’s hood and locate the spark plug wire on t he f ront, right area of the engine. • Carefully pul l the spa r k plug wire boot off of the spark plug.
24 Pivo t Points & Linkag e Lubricate all the pivot poin ts on the drive system, parking brak e and l ift linkage at l east onc e a season with light oil. Deck Whee ls Each of the tractor deck’s front gauge wheels i s equipped wi th a grease fitting.
25 Cutting Bla des WARNING: Be sure t o sh ut the eng ine off, remove ignition key , disconn ect t h e spark plug wire(s) and ground against the engine to prevent uni ntended st a r ting before re moving the cutting blade(s) for sharpening or replacement.
26 Char ging If the unit h as n ot bee n put i nto use for an extended period of t ime , charge the battery with an aut omotive- type 12 -volt charger for a m inimum of one hou r at six amps. WARNING: Batte ries give off an ex plosive gas while charging.
27 Figu re 28 Figu re 29 Chan ging The T ransmissio n Dr ive Be lt All belts on your tractor are subject to wear and shou ld be replaced i f any signs of wear are pres ent. IMPORT ANT: Th e V-belts f ound on your tractor are specially de signed to engage and disengage safely.
28 NOTE: Prope r removal of the drive belt requ ires the removal of several tractor com ponents. Read through the following procedure prior t o attem pting it t o determine i f you feel you coul d succes sfully co mplete i t. If y o u don’t, see your Cub Cadet dealer t o have the belt changed .
29 Hydrostatic T ransm ission The h ydrostatic transmission is sealed at t he fa ctory and is maintenance free. The fluid level cannot be checked nor can the o il be changed. Always k eep t he area around the transmission cooli ng fan free of g rass and deb ris at all times.
