4 Product fea tures Built-In Dynamic Host C onfiguration Protocol ( DHCP) —Built-In Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) on-board m akes for the easiest possibl e c onnec tion of a network. The DHCP ser ver will assign IP addresses to each com puter automatically so there is no need for a complicated networking setup.

Sel ect y our country or ISP from the lists. The Se tup Assi stant wil l now config ure your ro uter by s ending d ata to your router an d restar ting it.

Setting up y our wireless rout er 13 T o use the optional assistance to connect to other computers: 1 This optional step will help you t o connec t additional wired and wireless computers to your network. F ollow the on-screen instructions. At this point, your router is set up and working properly .
14 Setting u p your wireless rou ter W ir eless sec urity set up Make sure th at your complete t he basic setup o f your router be fore setting up sec urity. Make sure that all of your computer s (wired and wireless) can s uccessfully connect to t he Internet through your router .
Setting up y our wireless rout er 15 3 Y o u will b e asked to pi ck a se curit y typ e. W e recommen d WP A2-PSK as the secu rit y mode and then WP A-PSK+ WP A 2-PSK as the Au thentic ation, as it i s the mo st secure and ea siest to u se. Once you have mad e your ch oice, cli ck Apply Changes .
16 Setting u p your wireless rou ter 6 If you do not want to upd ate your comp uter's w ireless ada pter to work with WP A/WP A2, r eturn to Step 4 and choose WEP . Altern ative setu p meth od The W eb-Ba sed Advanced User Interf ace is a Web-based tool that you can us e to set up your router if you do not want to use the S etup Assis tant.
Setting up y our wireless rout er 17 7 Make sure that your modem is connected to your router by checking the lights on the front of your r outer . T he green light labeled Modem should be on if your modem is connected correctly to y our router . If it is not, recheck y our connections.
18 Setting u p your wireless rou ter Quick-Na vigat ion links — Y ou can go d irectly to any of your router ’ s UI pages by clicking direc tly on th ese links. The l inks are d ivided into logical categories and group ed by tab s to make finding a par ticular setting easier to find .
Setting up y our wireless rout er 19 Configure your ro uter for connect ion to your Internet Ser vice Provid er ( ISP) The Internet/WAN tab is where you will set up your router to connec t to your Internet Ser vice Provider (ISP).
20 Setting u p your wireless rou ter Change WAN MAC Address If your ISP requir es a s pecific MA C address to connect to th e ser vice, y ou can enter a spe cific MA C address or clone the current computer's MA C address through t his link.
Setting up y our wireless rout er 21 Setting y our ISP co nnec tion type to P PPoE Most DSL providers us e PPPoE as the connec tion typ e. If y ou use a DSL modem to connec t to the I nt ernet , y our IS P may us e PPP oE t o log you in to the servic e.

Setting up y our wireless rout er 25 Leas e Time –T he length of time the DH CP ser ver will reser v e the IP address for each computer . W e r ecommend that y ou leave the lease time set to Fo re ve r .
26 Setting u p your wireless rou ter Changing the Wi reless Channel There ar e a number of operating channels from which you can choose. In the United States , there ar e 11 channels. In Australia, the United Kingdom, and m ost of Europe, there are 13 channels.
Setting up y our wireless rout er 27 Using the bandwidth swit ch This switch le t you set your router's wireles s bandwidth modes. There are several mod es ava ila bl e: 20MHz only Sett ing your router to thi s mode all ows only 20 M Hz ope ration.
28 Setting u p your wireless rou ter Using W i-Fi P rotected Set up WPS uses WP A2 for en cryp tion. It does not pr ovide additio nal secur ity , bu t rat her , standardizes the m ethod for sec uring your w ireless net work.
Setting up y our wireless rout er 29 WP A2 Requiremen ts IMPORTANT : In order to use WP A2 s ecurity , all your comput ers and wir eless client adapters must be upgra ded with patches, driv er , and client utilit y software that support WP A2.

Impor ta nt: Make sure that your wireless computers are updated to work with WP A2 and have the co rr ect settings to get prop er connection to y our r outer .
Setting up y our wireless rout er 31 Settin g WEP en crypti on Note to M ac us ers: The Pas sph ra se option will not op er ate with Apple® AirPort®. To configur e encryptio n f or your Mac computer , set the encryption using the manu al method described in the next section.

Setting up y our wireless rout er 35 Configuring Int ernal Forwarding set tings The Virtual Ser vers function lets you route external (Internet) calls for ser vices such as a W eb ser ver (port 80), FTP ser ver (Port 21), or othe r ap plications throug h your router to your internal network.
36 Setting u p your wireless rou ter Setting Client IP filters Y o ur router can be c onfigured to restric t a ccess to the Internet, e-mail, or other network ser vic es at specific days and times. Restri ction can be set for a single comp uter , a range of comp uter s, or mul tiple comput ers .
Setting up y our wireless rout er 37 T o set up a DMZ for a computer: • Enter the last digits of the computer ’ s IP address in the IP field , click Enable , then click App ly Cha ng es for the change to take effect.
38 Setting u p your wireless rou ter W AN ping blocki ng Computer hack ers use what is known as pinging to find potential victims on the Internet . By pinging a specific IP addr ess and rec eiving a resp onse from the IP addr ess, a hacker can determi ne that so mething of interest might be there.
Setting up y our wireless rout er 39 Restar t ing your rou ter Sometimes it may be necessar y to restar t or reboot your router if it begins working improperly . Restar ting or rebooting your r outer will NOT delete any of your c onfiguration setting s.
40 Setting u p your wireless rou ter Restoring factory default se ttings Using this option will restor e all of the s ettings in your r outer to the fac tor y (default) settin gs. It is recom mend ed that you back up your set tings b efore you restore al l of th e defau lts.
Setting up y our wireless rout er 41 4 Selec t a location. Y ou can name the file anything you want, or use the defa ult name “Confi g. ” B e sure to name th e file so you can lo cat e it y ourself later . When you hav e selected the location and name of the file, click Sav e .

52 Setting u p your wireless rou ter 4 Selec t the TCP /IP tab (3). Next to Configure (4), you s hould see Manually or Using DHCP . If you d o not, check th e PPP oE tab (5 ) to make sure that Connec t using PPP oE is NO T selected.
