14 Setting u p your wireless network adapter C onnec ting to your netw ork T o use the wireless networking utility : 1 After res tar tin g your compu ter , doub le - click the Wireless Net working Util ity ( WNU) icon located on the d esktop sc reen. 2 The WNU screen will appear .

If the icon is not present , click on Sta rt , Progra ms , Dynex, Wireless Netw orking Utilit y .

WEP gives wireless networks the e quivalent level of privac y protection as a comparable wired network.
Setting up y our wireless net work adapt er 19 WP A WP A is a new Wi-Fi stand ard that im proves upon th e secur ity f eatures of WE P . T o use WP A securi ty , the dr ivers and soft ware of your wi reless eq uipment must be upgrad ed to suppo rt it.
20 Setting u p your wireless network adapter WPS uses WP A2 for encr yption. It does not pr ovi de additi onal secur ity , but sta ndar dized the method for securing your wir eless net work. On y our client utility , WPS -ena bled networks are indicated by a key icon.

A hex (hexadecimal) key is a combina tion of numbers and letters fr om A–F and 0–9.

Setting up y our wireless net work adapt er 23 3 Enter your network key . This can be from eight to 63 c harac ters a nd ca n be letter s, numbers, or symbols. This same key must be us ed on all of the clients (net work cards) that you w ant to include in your network.
24 Troub leshooting WNU Help The WN U Help tab lets you access onl ine and telep hone sup por t, as well as ad vanced diagnostic tools. Ad vanc ed diagno stic tool s The Advanced Diagnost ic T ools section is the central control panel for all the settings of the hardwar e and soft ware components of the wire less net work.
Troubleshoo ting 25 If you ha ve concerns about y our network’ s pe r formance that mi ght be related t o range or obstruc tion factors, try moving the co mputer to a position bet ween five and 10 feet from the wire less router ( or acce ss point) in order t o see if d istance is the p roblem.
26 Troub leshooting Th e name of your wireless netw ork DOES NO T appear in t he list of A vailable Net works. If the correct network name is not listed under “ Available Netw orks” in the WNU, try the follo wing troubleshooting steps: 1 T em porarily m ove the computer , if po ssible, to 5 to 10 feet away from the w ireless rout er .
Troubleshoo ting 27 Check the SSID sett ings to see i f they m atch. The SSID is case-se nsitive and the spelling on each com puter mu st be exac tly the sa me in or de r for the network ada pter to connec t to the wireless router (or access po int).
28 Troub leshooting Limiti ng the wirel ess tra nsmit rate - Limit ing the wireless transmi t rate can help improv e the maximum wir e less range , and connection stabilit y .
Specifications 29 What 's the differ enc e between 802.11 b , 802.11g , 802.11a, and 802.11n? Currently there are four levels of w ireless net wor ki ng standa rds, which transmi t data at very different maximum speeds. Each is bas ed on the desig nation for certifying net work standards.
