Introduction 3 We l c o m e ! Thank you for making the Alesis MultiMix-8FX a par t of your studio . Since 1984, we 've been designing and building creative tools for the au dio commu nity . 1 Getting Started 15 Hooking up the MultiMix-8FX This diag ram will help you get the MultiMix-8FX hooked up and ready to go . The equi pment you u se depends on personal preference and on wh ether you’ re perfo r ming liv e or recording .
1 Getting Started 16 Setting Levels Before y ou can begin mixing dif ferent audio sourc es with your MultiMix, you must set the lev el for each channel you’ re using. This helps to prev ent di stortion an d clipping . The idea is to get the strongest signal possible without clippi ng .
2 A Tour of the MultiMix 17 In this chapter, y ou’ll learn all ab out the MulitMix-8FX’ s components (except for the digital effects p rocessor, whic h is explained in the next chap ter). Plea se refer to the di agrams as you read each section to see which components we’ re talking about.
2 A Tour of the MultiMix 18 Line Inputs (Channels 5 – 8) Unlike channels 1 – 4, the line inpu ts on channels 5 – 8 are stereo inputs that ha v e left and right inputs . If you’ re using one of these channel s as a mono i nput, plug y our instrument into t he left inpu t.
A Tour of the MultiMix 2 19 Channel Strips The eight channel strips are vir tually identical to each other, with the only dif ference be ing that c hannels 1 – 4 are mono and channels 5 – 8 are stereo . Each channel strip contains the following components.
2 A Tour of the MultiMix 20 EQ The MultiMix gives you three bands of EQ per channel. Using these knobs , y ou can tai lor the c hannel’ s signal b y boosti ng some frequencies and cutting o thers . The LO and HI controls are shelving controls with fixe d frequencies of 75 Hz and 12 kHz respectively .
A Tour of the MultiMix 2 21 2TK TO CTRL ROOM Switch When you eng age this switch, the signal co ming in from the 2- TRA CK jac ks is route d to the headphone s and to the control room output. Th is lev el is controlled by the HDPH / CTRL ROOM lev el control and cancels out an y signal from the main mix.
2 A Tour of the MultiMix 22 Power Supply Unit This unit provides 18.5 V A C at 700 mA, more than enough to keep your MultiMix-8FX run ning smoothly . As with nearly all pow er supply uni ts , this one te nds to get wa r m when lef t on for a while. This is perfectly nor mal.
3 Digital Effects Processor 23 Onboard you r MultiMix-8F X™ is a pow erful e ffects unit that has 100 preset prog rams . W e offer a few tips on where to use these, but don’ t lim it y ourself to our sug gestions . W e recommend that y ou experiment wi th these effects to g et a good feel for how they can improve you r m ixes.
3 Digital Effects Processor 24 CHORUS These create the effect of multip le voices (or instruments) sounding at onc e from a single input. FLANGE These create a sweeping, swoosh ing sound effe ct that you will probably rec ognize. DELA Y These effects are bas ed on a discreet repetition or echo of the input.
4 Applications 25 Y our MultiMix-8FX can be used in a wide variety of ways in both live and recording app lications . Y ou have sev eral options for bringing sound into and out of the board.

5 Troubleshooting 27 If you’ re having problems operating th e MultiMix-8FX, this troubleshooting index will help you cor rect them. Symptoms Cause Solution No sound from t he mix er . Mixer is n ot plugged in or turn ed on. Plug in mixer and turn it on.

Glossary 35 Here are the definition s to some ter ms you’ll probably en counter while using your MultiMix-8FX. T erm Definition aux (auxiliar y) An additional set of outp uts and inputs found on many mix ers . These allow the addition of exter nal effects and other audio sources.
Glossary 36 boosting mic and line sign als . level The amount of power dri ving an audio signal. The most commo n names giv en to lev els of varying voltage are, from low est to highest, microphone level, instr ument level and line lev el. master section The section of a mixer where the ma in mix is controlled.
