1 To set up your EPSON Stylus Pro 5500, you need to unpack it , instal l the paper tray(s) and ink cartridges, load paper, and run a printer check. Once the print er is set up, you nee d to inst all the p rinter dr iver and util ities from the printer sof tware CD-ROM and then align the pr int head.

Follow the instructio ns on the i llustrated sheet in the box to remove the tape and prote ctive materials. Save all packaging so you can use i t if you need to transport the printer late r.
1-3 Settin g Up the Pr inter | 1-3 3. Place your printer o n top of the ca ssette as shown : 4. Attach the prin ter and cassette using the tw o screws that come wit h the cassette. Use the hexago nal wrench that comes w ith the cassette to tighten the screws .

Re installing partial ly empty ink cartri dges prevents th e ink counter f rom accurately indi cating the amount of ink remaini ng. 1. Plug in the printer and turn it on by pr essing the P Operat e button.
1-6 1-6 | Setting Up the Prin ter 3. Open one of the ink c artridge p ackages and sh ake the cartrid ge gently, as shown . 4. Lift u p the ink c artrid ge clamp f or the cor responding ink slot . 5. Hold the ink cartridge with the ar row mark fa ce-up and po inting to the rear of the p rinter, and ful ly insert the cartridge i nto the slot.
1-7 Settin g Up the Pr inter | 1-7 6. Close the clamp until it clicks in to place. The corre sponding H ink ou t light goes out. Repeat step s 3 through 6 for the other i nk cartridges. 7. Make sure all the H ink out lights are of f, then close the ink compartment doors.

Slide the swit ch to the roller po sition that matches the paper si ze you ’ re load ing. 4. If you ’ re us ing le gal-size or l arger paper, rele ase th e exte nsion l ocks and pull out the paper tray ex tension completely.
1-9 Settin g Up the Pr inter | 1-9 5. Slide both edge guides out as far as they will go. 6. Fan a stack of paper and then even the edges. 7. Load the stack of paper with the printabl e surface dow n and the right edge of the paper r esting against the right side o f the paper tray.

1-12 1-12 | Se tting Up t he Prin ter Running a Printer Check You can use the pri nter check to make sur e that your printer is operating correctly b efore you conn ect it to your computer. 1. Turn off the p rinter. 2. Make sure letter-si ze (or larger) p aper is loaded in the main paper tray.
1-13 Sett ing Up the Printer | 1-1 3 • If the p attern has missing segments, as in the follo wing example , your printer may have a clogged ink nozzle. Run a cleaning cyc le as described on page 6-1. • If nothing prints at all, make sure your ink cartridges are correctly installed.
1-14 1-14 | Se tting Up t he Prin ter Connecting to the USB Port To connect the p rinter to a USB port, you need a standard shielded USB cable. Foll ow the steps b elow to connec t the printer to yo ur computer. 1. Make sure bo th the printer and yo ur computer are turned off.
1-15 Sett ing Up the Printer | 1-1 5 Connecting to a Par allel Port (Wi ndows Only) To use the pri nter ’ s built-in parall el interf ace, yo u need a shi elded, bidirectional, par allel cable. Follow the steps below to conne ct the printer to your computer.

The Ethernet card automatically detects the protocols on your networ k, so you ca n print from Wi ndows 95, 98 , Me, 2000, or NT 4.

Push it in firmly to f ully insert the connecto r at the rear of the interf ace card into th e printer ’ s in ternal so cket. 6. First install th e printer software on every c omputer that will nee d to access the printer, as d escribed on page 1-18.

1 Your EPSON Styl us Pro 5500 pri nts on a variety of substrates , from plain paper to high- quality matte and glossy medi a. With four paths to choo se from ( if you have the op tional l ower ca ssette), you ca n use pape r sizes f rom 4 × 6 inches to 13 × 19 in ches.
2-2 2-2 | Printing on Various Papers The fo llowing table in dicates the paper sizes yo u can pr int fro m the four pape r pat hs : Using the Standar d and Optional Paper Trays You can use these tr ays for most sizes of paper up to 1 3 × 19 inches. Howeve r, the trays can ’ t handle paper sho rter than 11 inches ( letter-size ).

2-4 2-4 | Printing on Various Papers • Load pap er befo re you send your p rint job. If the pape r runs ou t during a print job, you can have the printer automatically switch to th e other tray. (The paper size and me dia type levers mus t be set the same for bo th trays, or the leve rs must be set to Other on the lower tray.

The trays can hol d 250 sheets o f plain pape r (24 lb bond, f or example). Follow the guidelines for tray cap acities on page 2-3 when you use EPSON media or similar papers.

To print o n paper in th e lower tray, select Paper Tray (Lower) or Auto Select in yo ur printe r softwar e before you send th e print j ob.

Align the right ed ge of the paper with the right edge guide and inser t the paper in the sl ot until i t meets r esistance . The printer automatically feeds the paper , and it starts print ing when it receives a pr int job.

Slide the edge guid e to match your paper s ize. 6. Align the r ight edge of the paper with the edge guide and ins ert the paper in the slot , printa ble side u p, until i t meets resistanc e.
2-9 Printing on Various Papers | 2-9 Selecting EPSON Paper You can use many types of coated, glossy, and o ther papers with your EPSON Stylus Pr o 5500. EPSON media, whic h is special ly formulate d for the inks used in yo ur printer, ensu re high-quality res ults.
2-10 2-10 | Printing on V arious Papers Clearing Paper Jams If the Pap er Out light and all three paper lights on the printer ’ s control panel are flashing, you have a paper jam. Follow as many of the steps below as necess ary to clear the pape r path.

Click the utility button on the Print or Page Setup dialog box.
