1.5 MAIN COM PONENTS To simplify ma intenan c e and repair , the ma in com ponents of th e E PL -5500 h ave been des igned for easy re mov al and replace men t .
1.5. 1 C169 MAIN-B Boar d The C169 MAIN -B boar d is a video c ontr olle r and en g in e contr oller boar d . Th e prim ar y fun cti ons of this board are receiv ing print data from the hos t, gen erating the pr int image ( v ideo) , and sen ding the print image to the engin e controller via the vid eo interfac e.
1.5. 2 P WB- E Board The PWB - E is the pow er supply board, wh ich consists o f a switching r egulator cir cuit. It conver ts the AC line voltage into +24 V and +5 VDC voltages. There are t w o types of power s upply board, the 100/120 V type an d 220/240 V type.
1.5.4 Optica l Unit The opt ica l uni t consi s ts o f the l ase r di o de ( se m i -c ond ucto r la s er ), the m i rro r m o tor ( sc anner mo to r) whi ch drive s the pol ygon mirro r fo r laser sca nning, a nd sev eral mirro rs and lenses.

2.1 ENGINE OPERATION This section describes the functions and operating principles of the EPL-5500 engi ne. Figure 2-1 shows t he locations and names of the main engine components. 1. Fan Motor ( M3) 11. Paper Feeding Tray 2. Lower Fusing Roller 12. Paper Lift-up Plate 3.
2.1. 1 P rin t Pro cess This sect ion describes the print proc es s fr om paper feeding to paper exit. Figure 2-2 shows a diagram of the print process.
2.1. 1.1 Pap er Feed ing Paper can be fed int o the pr int er from t he paper f eed tr ay ( 150 s heets) or f rom the manual feed slot (1 sheet at a time). Installing an optional second paper feed unit ( lower cas sette, 250 sheets) adds another feedi ng method.
Second Pa per Feed Unit (Optiona l Low e r Cas s ette) This unit contai ns no dr ive motor, so t he main motor ( M 1) drive is transmitted to the paper take-up and transport sec tions in the unit vi a t he drive transmissi on gear .
2.1. 1.3 La ser E xpo sure The laser beam, emitted from the optical unit , makes an invisibl e s tati c image. The SOS (start of scan) sensor, instal led on the laser diode contr ol board (PWB-D), unifies the l aser emission timing for each scan line.
2.1. 1.5 Im age Transf er The electrode com b is an image transfer system that t ransfers t he toner image on the P C drum onto the paper. 2.1. 1.6 Fu si ng The toner image transferred onto the paper is fixed securely using a heat roller system as the fusing system.
2.1 .2 Engi ne Con tr ol This s ec t ion describes engine control, the power s uppl y boar d, and t he high-voltage supply boar d. The engine is controlled by the main board (C169 MAIN-B Board). Figure 2-10 shows t he engine controll er connecting diagr am.
2.1.2. 1 Ma in Motor F unctions and Control The M1 m ai n motor t ransmits the drive to the pr inter rollers and t he optional sec ond paper feed uni t (lower cas sette) v ia each gear as shown bel ow.
Figure 2- 12 s hows t he main motor dr iv e c ir c uit. The M1 main motor is a f our-phase s t epping motor controll ed by the CPU (IC201) on the main board (C169 MAIN-B). This board has a stepping motor driver IC that drives the M1 m ain motor with a constant current.
2.1. 2.3 Fu se r Co nt rol The heater lamp, powered by AC v oltage, heats the f user. When the power supply board receives a FUSER signal from the main board (C169 M AIN-B), the power supply board (PWB- E) supplies the AC v olt age to the heater lamp.

If any of the f ol lowing conditions are detected, the printer indicates a fuser error: 1. If the thermis tor detects t he temperature has not r isen by 20º C for 50 msec. within 12 to 30 sec . after warm up. (This error applies onl y when t he thermistor detects a temperature of 90º C or less .
2.1. 2.5 La ser D io de Dr ive Figure 2-17 shows the laser diode drive circuit. Laser diode em ission is contr olled by three signals ( LDATA, LDAPC1, and LDA P C2) from the main board ( C169 MAIN-B). The LDATA signal is the laser on/off signal . When it is LOW, t he laser emits, and when it is HIGH, the l aser stops emitting.
2.1. 2.6 B ias V oltag es an d L aser Dr ive T imi ng Figure 2- 20 is a diagram of the drum charge bias v oltage, i m age transfer bias volt age, and the developing bias voltage c ontrol c ircuit. T hese bias volt ages are gener ated f rom the +24 V DC from the high-v oltage supply board (PWB-F).
Figure 2-21 shows t he print pr ocess. Figure 2-22 shows the start print sequence. The printer ’s engine s tarts pr int ing when it receives the PRINT signal from t he video controller cir cuit. 2.1. 2.7 Fa n Moto r Cont rol The fan motor ( M3) rotates at engine initialization, and stops after 2 s ec. The fan m ot or also rotates during printing. When printing ends, the f an motor stops after 3 min. If the f ollowing c ondition is detected, the printer indicates a Fan m ot or error.
2.2 VIDEO CONTROLLER OPERATION The video control ler section generates the video s ignals for received data. The video controller section is the C169 M A I N-B Board. 2.2. 1 C169 MAIN-B B oar d Operat ion Figure 2-26 shows a block diagr am of v ideo control ler section of t he C169 MAIN-B Board.

Print data and commands transmitted from the host computer via the parallel or optional interf aces are read using the CPU interrupt proc ess and stored in t he DRAM input buf fer.
2.2. 1.1 R eset Circ uit The entire system (CPU and external devi ces) can be initialized if the RESET signal (CP U pi n 113) are active sim ultaneously. This c ircuit uses an M51938 IC to monitor the supply voltage if a voltage level less t han 4.25 V i s detect ed.
2.2. 1.3 In ter ru pt C ont rol The ASIC E05A93 determines the priority l evel of the interrupt and outputs it to terminals IRL0 - IRL3. Then an interrupt is sent to t he CPU. When the IRL0-3 value i s 1111b, the CPU proc ess is a non-maskable i nterrupt process.
2.2. 1.5 Par al le l Int er fa ce Cir cu it Figure 2- 31 shows a circuit bloc k diagram of the parallel int erface. Data sent from the host computer is lat ched within the E05A 93 by the STROBE signal. The E05A93 outputs a BUSY signal automatic ally to stop t he host computer f rom sending additi onal data.
2.2. 1.6 Vi deo Inte rf ace The ASIC E05A92 maps the S RAM int o a m em ory spac e different from the system m em ory. T he CPU transmi ts data from the V-RAM (in the syst em RAM ) to the SRAM using the ASIC E05A92.

3.1 GENERAL INFORMATION This chapter describes disas sembly/assembly procedures to be used for replacing the m ain assembli es of the EPL-5500. 3.1 .1 P r ec aut io ns for Di sas sem bl y/Ass e mbly Follow t he precauti ons below when disassembling/ass embling the pr inter.

3.2 DIS ASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLY This section descri bes and illustrates the procedures for removing and disassembling the components of t he EPL- 5500. Cleaning is described i n Chapter 6.
3.2.2 Removal o f the Contro ller Sec tion The control section i s c om prised of t he cont roller board ( the C169 MAIN-B Board). 3.2. 1.1 M ain Boa rd (C 169 MAIN -B Boar d) R em oval CAUTION Before you remove t h e video controller bo ard, make sure that yo u remove any optional LocalTalk/ serial board or T ype-B EX box.
3.2 .3 Disassem bling the En gine This section describes disassembl ing t he engine, including the high voltage unit (PWB-F) and power supply boar d (PWB-E). 3.2. 3.1 Op ti cal U nit Rem oval CAUTION ❒ Do not tou ch the op t i cal unit excep t at t he time of rep lacement.
3.2. 3.2 Im age Transf er Un it R emo val 1. Open t he top cover. 2. Remove the har ness cover A. (Refer to Section 3.2.3.3.) 3. Remove the 2 screws (#5) and holders at both ends of t he image transfer unit. 4. Disconnect the 2 connectors and remove t he unit .
ASSEMBLY POINTS After reinstal ling the image transfer unit, check that the u ni t smoothly mo ves up an d down. 5. Remove the r emov e the electrode comb. ASSEMBLY POINTS When reinstallin g the el ect rode comb, be carefu l of the direct ion of instal latio n.
3.2. 3.3 U pper U ni t Rem oval 1. Open t he upper unit. 2. Remove the r i ght cover and lef t cover. (Ref er to Sec tion 3.2.1.1. ) 3. Disconnect connectors CN202, CN208, and CN211 f rom the C169 MAIN-B. 4. Remove harness covers A and B , and pull out t he CN1 of the PW B-E board.

5.1 OVE RVIEW The EPL-5500 has a sophist ic ated, built -in, self -di agnostic funct ion that reduces the troubl eshooting time by ident if ying failed parts or components. T his sel f-diagnos ti c test identifies the t roubl eshooting problems for page pr inters, in whic h even a trivial f ailure can result in a ser ious print qual ity problem.
