1 Getting St arted The EPSON E PL-N2010 printer c ombines high p erformance and reli abil ity w ith a wid e ra nge o f feat ures . 2 Chapter 5, “ SelecType,” co ntains detail ed information on t he settin gs you can make in SelecT ype. Read th is chapte r if you are not able to modify a p rinter sett ing from y our software.
3 The printer' s 600-dpi (dots p er inch) re solution is enhanced by EPSON's Resolutio n Improvement Technolog y (RITech), which smoothes the jagg ed edges of diagonal lines in bo th text and graphics. Th is gives your d ocuments a clean, c risp look that contribut es to a professional appearance.
4 Options The printer comes wit h a built-in bi-direction al parallel in terface, a serial interface, and 8MB of memory, which can be expanded up to 256MB.
5 For E urope an u sers United Kingdom The EPL-N20 10 is a page pr inter whi ch utilizes a semiconduct or laser. There is no po ssibility of dang er from the laser, pr ovided the pri nter is op era ted acco rdin g to the in stru ct ions in the gu ides provided .

8 Laser Print er Precautions This p rinte r uses l aser te chno logy. The fol lowin g li st of precauti ons applies when ever you ope n the print er cover. Even if you are famil iar with other types of p rinters, b e sure to follow t hese precautions ca refully to ensure safe, efficient operatio n.
9 ❏ Protect the light-sensiti ve drum from exposure to light . Avoid exposing t he imagi ng cartri dge to roo m light any longer than necessary. Do not open the drum’s p rotective cov er. Overexposing t he drum may cause abnormally dark or ligh t areas to appear on the pr inted page and redu ce the service life of the dr um.

2-2 Paper Han dli ng Loading P aper The printe r can feed pa per fr om any of tw o sou rces : the MP tra y, or th e low er p aper c ass ette . Please note the foll owin g poin ts. ❏ Paper sho uld be high qua lity and rel atively smooth with a weight between 6 0 and 135 g/m 2 (16 to 36 lb).

2-8 Paper Han dli ng 6. Set the paper size switch so it matches the size of paper loaded in the tra y. ❏ To load thick envelopes, heavy paper, or other media such as labels and t ransparencies, feed sheets one a t a time. See “Ch oosi ng P aper ” on pag e 2 -11.

3-4 Option s Installing one paper cassette unit This section explains how to mount a 250- sheets paper ca ssette unit or a 500-sheets paper cassette unit onto the pri nter. 1. Tu rn off the p rinter. 2. Unp lug th e pri nter ’s po wer c ord fro m the elec trica l out let an d from the prin ter.
3 Options 3-5 6. Sec ure t he p rin ter to the ca ssett e un it w ith th e sc rew s th at come with the casset te unit. Instal l three of t he screws at the locations noted bel ow.
3-6 Option s 1. Tu rn off the p rinter. 2. Unp lug th e pri nter ’s po wer c ord fro m the elec trica l out let an d from the prin ter. 3. Re move all interfa ce cable from the i nterface conn ector. 4. Plac e the cas sett e uni t that is to b e set at th e bot tom i n the location where the printer is install ed.
3 Options 3-7 6. Li ft up the pr inter. Make sure the p rinter and cassette u nits are facing in the same di rection. Aligni ng the pin on the cassette uni t with the hole on the bo ttom of the pri nter, low er the printer until it re sts securely on the cassett e unit.
3-8 Option s 10. Turn on the p rinter. To confi rm that the l ower paper ca ssette is install ed correct ly, print a st atus sheet by pr essing the c ontrol panel b utton. The lower pape r cassette wil l be listed on the st atus sheet as one of the available options.
3 Options 3-9 4. Fan a stack of p aper and t ap it on a fl at surfac e to even the edges. Ins ert the p aper prin table -side up i nto the pap er cassette. If your pri ntsouts are cu rled or do not st ack properly w hen using plai n paper, t ry turnin g the stack over and r eloading it.
3-10 Option s Loading Paper into the 250-Sheets Lower Paper Cassette 1. Pul l out the p aper cassette from the pa per cassett e unit. 2. Re mo ve the cover . 3. Pr ess down on the metal plate in the paper cassett e. 4. Sl ide the paper guide outwar ds then slide the paper guid e clip (vertical ) outwards.

3-12 Option s 7. Close the co ver and insert the paper cassette into the printer. Make sure the paper cassette is inside the printer as far as it will go.
3 Options 3-13 You can purchase DIMMs from various vendors. Be sure th e DIMM you pu rchase meets the fol lowing requirement s: ❏ 168-pin, SDRAM type ❏ Capacity of 3 2, 64, 128 or 256 MB ❏ Access speed of 15 ns or less ❏ Dimensions within 134 mm (5.

3 Options 3-15 c Caution : Before you install the module, be sure to discharge any static electricity by touching the printer's shield cover. Ot herwise, you may dama ge static-sensitive c omponents. 8. Pul l the clips on ea ch side of the R AM slot outwa rd.
3-16 Option s 12. Replace the shield cover. Next, secure it with its screws. c Caution: When replacing the shield cover, be sure not to pinch the wires inside the printer between the printer case and the shield cover.
3 Options 3-17 13. Replace the print er's side co ver. 14. Gently close the printer cover . 15. Plug the po wer cord ba ck in and tu rn on the printer. To verify t hat memory is correc tly instal led, pri nt a status sheet by pressing the control panel button.

5 SelecType 5-13 Understand ing SelecTy pe Settings Read this section f or a complet e descri ption of the setti ngs available on the SelecType menus. Test menu For the settings bel ow, press Enter to print. No valu es are selectable by pressing Value .
5-14 Se lecT ype Emulation menu Use this me nu to select the printe r emulation mode . You can specify di fferent emulations for each interface; in o ther word s, for each computer you connect. Si nce each emulation mod e has its own specific op tions, make settin gs in the LJ 4, ESCP2, FX, GL 2, or I239X menus, as necessary.
5 SelecType 5-15 Page Siz e Specifies the p aper size. Wide A4 (Les erJet 4 onl y) Allows you to pri nt 80 charac ters per line of 10 cp i font on A4 size paper. Orient ation Spe cifie s whet her t he pa ge i s print ed in portr ait or lan dscap e orie ntat ion .
5-16 Se lecT ype Tray menu This me nu al low s you t o spec ify the size a nd t ype of paper you load. Accessing this menu also lets you check the size of the paper curr en tly l oad ed. The pape r ty pe s ettin gs i n thi s men u ca n als o be mad e fr om y our printer driver.
5 SelecType 5-17 Note: LC1 Size, LC2 Size, and LC3 Size only display the currently loaded paper size. You cannot change this parameter, it is set automatically.
5-18 Se lecT ype Config menu RITec h Allows you to adju st the RITech sett ing. RITech pr oduces smoother and cr isper li nes, text, and grap hics. Note: You can also make the RITech setting directly from OneTouch Mode 2, Toner Save Turns the Toner Save mode on.
5 SelecType 5-19 Size Ignore Select whether a paper size erro r is ignored . Turning t his ite m on causes the pri nter to pri nt even if the im age size is not ma tch the specified size of paper. Some cases cause smudges because of toner th at is not t ransferred onto the pap er properly.
5-20 Se lecT ype Paper Type Allows you t o use various ty pes of paper. T hick is useful f or irregul ar size pl ain paper over 7 5g/m 2 an d envelopes.
5 SelecType 5-21 Standby Saves power b y reducing the p ower to the fi xing heater i f the pri nter rece ive s no d ata fo r 60 minu tes. In th is m ode , the print er begins warming up as soon as yo u press send pri nt data; it then warms up and is ready to prin t in about 45 seconds.

5 SelecType 5-23 Pari ty When this option is set to None , par ity checking is disabled. The pari ty bi t, if u sed , pro vid es a ba sic form o f err or de tec tion.

5 SelecType 5-25 Buffer Size Determine s the amount of memor y to be used for r eceivin g data and print ing data . If set t o Maximum , more mem ory is allocated for receiv ing data. If se t to Min imum , more memory is al located for print ing. The factory defau lt setting is Normal .
5-26 Se lecT ype Note: ❏ After changing these settings, reset the printer to make the new settings effective. To reset the printer, Press the Continue and SelecTyp e buttons simultaneousl y. Altematively, turn off the printer, then after 5 seconds, turn it back on.
5 SelecType 5-27 SymSet Selects the default symbol set. If the font you selected in FontSo urce and Fo nt Num ber is n ot avai labl e in the ne w Sym Set setting, the Fontsource and the Font Nu mber values are automati cally repla ced with the default value.
5-28 Se lecT ype LF Functi on When LF i s set f or the LF Functi on, the pri nter does not perf orm a c a rr ia ge r e t u rn (C R ) c o m m a n d w it h e ac h l i n e f ee d ( LF ) o r f or m feed (FF) . Setting CR+LF for the LF Func tion causes the printe r to add a carriage retu rn to each line feed or form feed it receives.
