12 Loading P aper Y ou shoul d also follow these guidelines: ■ Always load the short edge firs t, even when you ’ re printing landscape-oriented pictures. ■ When using special papers, check the paper package for additional instructions. Some papers require using a support sheet included in the package.

14 Accessing Photos Removing Memory Cards Note: If your printe r is connected to your comput er, see page 18 for instructions on removing your memory card. Make sure the car d light is not flashing, then pull the card straight out of the slot. Caution: Do not remove a card while the card light is flashing; you may lose photos on your card.
Connecting External Device s 15 When you connect a digital camera or storage device, the printer treats it like a memory card. F ollow these steps to connect it: 1. Remo ve any memory cards from the printer . If you leave a card in the printer , images will be read from the card instead of your camera or storage device.
16 Accessing Photos Saving Your Photos to an External Device If you don ’ t have a computer , you can save photos that are on your camera ’ s memory card to an external device that you connect directly to your printer . This lets you delete the images on your memory card and reuse it without losing your original photos.
Copying Photos t o Your Computer 17 Copying Photos to Your Computer If you ’ ve taken digital photos with your ca me ra, you can insert the memor y card into your printer’ s mem ory card slot and copy the photos to your computer . Y ou can access the contents of the card just like any driv e on your computer .
18 Accessing Photos Configuring PhotoStarter 1. When you see the message on page 17, click Next . Y ou see the PhotoS tarter setup assistant: 2. Click Nex t again. The setup assistant asks you a series of questions about ho w you want PhotoS tarter to work.
19 Printing Without a Computer Y our Epson Stylus P hoto R320 lets you print photos quickly and easily without a computer . J ust load paper , insert your digital camera ’ s memory card, choose print settings from the control panel, and press the gr een x Print button.
20 Printing Without a Computer T o select multiple photos in the Select Photo menu, use one of these settings: ■ Individual: Select several photos by number , and choose one or more copies of each—for example, photos 2, 9, and 17. ■ All: P rint all the photos on your car d.
Custom Photo Prin ting 21 Custom Photo Printing Before y ou begin, make sure the printer is in A dvanced mode. If the printer is in Basic mode, pr ess the Basic/A dvanced button to select Advanced mode. 1. P ress or to highlight Select Photo , th en press OK .
22 Printing Without a Computer 6. Select the setting that matches the type of paper you loaded, then press OK . Refer to the table below: 7. After selecting the paper type, press OK to enter the Paper Size menu. 8. Select the siz e of the paper you ’ v e loaded, then press OK .
Saving Print Settings 23 Note: If you don’t see t he entire image in your print s, check to make sure the Fit to Frame and Crop options are Off (see page 25). 11. If you selected t o print All, an Index, or a Range of photos, you can print multiple sheets of your sele cted layout.
24 Printing Without a Computer 2. When you have finished selecting your settings, press and hold the Custom button until you see a message saying that your settings have been saved. When you want to print, pr ess the Custom button to r ecall your settings.
Cropping and Sizing Your Photo s 25 Automatically Adjusting Your Photos When you use the printer’ s automatic image adju stments, the adjustments are applied to all your photos. 1. P ress or to highlight Mo re Options , then pr ess OK . 2. Highlight Automatic C orrection , then pr ess OK .
26 Printing Without a Computer The dimensions 1.2 × and 1.5 × indicate how much the printed part of your photo is zoomed. F or example, if you select 1.5 × , it zooms in to 1.5 times the original size. A higher zoom level cr ops more of the image out of the photo .
Adding Photo Infor mation 27 4. If your photo is too long or wide to fit insi de the available space on your selected layout, part of the image will be automatically cropped. If you want to turn off automatic cropping (leaving white space at the edges of the photo), highlight Fit to Frame and press OK .
28 Printing Without a Computer Printing Special Layouts U sing special Epson paper , you can make greeting car ds, jewel case inserts, and iron-on transfers.
29 Printing From Your Computer When you print from you r computer , you can edit and enhance photos, create custom CDs or DVDs with y our text or photos, or create gr eeting car ds and calendar s, and then print them out. Before y ou start, make sure y our printer softwar e is installed as described on the Sta r t Here sheet.
30 Printing From Your Comp uter Basic Printing in Windows 1. F rom the F ile menu, click Print . Y ou see a Print window like this one: 2. Make sure EPSON Stylus Phot o R320 Series is selected. 3. Click the Preferences or Properties button. (If you see a Setup , Printer , or Options button, click it.

32 Printing From Your Comp uter Selecting Default Settings Y our printer settings only apply to the program you ’ re curr ently using. If you want, you can change the Windo ws default printer settings for all your programs. 1. Right click the printer icon in the lo we r right corner of your scr een (taskbar).

Selecting the Cor rect Paper Type 37 Selecting the Correct Paper Type When printing, always be sure to select th e correct paper T ype (Windows) or M edia T ype (Macintosh) setting. This tells the printer what kind of paper you ’ re using so it can adjust the ink coverage accor dingly .
38 Printing From Your Comp uter Printing Borderless Photos Y ou can print your photos without margins, extending the image all the way to the edges of the page. Although bor derless printing is a bit slo wer , you get beautiful snapshots or enlargements w ithout trimming, on these papers and sizes.
Printing Borderless Photos 39 Windows F ollow these steps to print bor derless photos: 1. S tart your photo program and open y our photo. 2. Open the F ile menu and click Print . Then click Preferences or P roperties . You see a screen like this: 3. Select Photo or Best Photo as the Quality Option setting.

Printing on CDs or DVDs 43 F ollow these steps to load CDs and D VDs into your printer: Caution: I f you don’t insert the tray co rrectly, you may damage the printer or tray. 1. Open the printer co ver and push in the output tray extension. 2. Lower the CD/D VD tray guide.
44 Printing From Your Comp uter Caution: Make sure you always use the small CD ring when printing 8 cm CDs a nd that the CD and ring lay flat on the tray; otherwise the pri nter may be damaged. 4. Insert the tray into the printer c arefully , maki ng sure it is level, not tilted up or down.
Printing on CDs or DVDs 45 Printing Your Design After you have cr eated your design and loaded a CD or DVD, y ou ’ re ready to print. Note: For information on designing CDs and DVD s, see the EPSON Print CD on-screen Help. 1. Open the F ile menu and select Print .
46 Printing From Your Comp uter 4. Make sure Stylus Phot o R320 is selected, then click Print Position Confirmation Pattern (W ind ow s) o r Print Position Check Pattern (Macintosh). 5. Click Print . The confirmation pattern is printed on the position check disk or CD.
Printing on CDs or DVDs 47 7. Open the F ile menu and select Adjust Print Position . Y ou see a screen like this: 8. Make sure Enter Values (Wi nd o ws ) o r Value Entry (Macintosh) is checked. Input the A distance in the Height (Top) or Top Space box.
48 Printing From Your Comp uter Adjusting the Print Density If ink smears on your printed CDs or D VDs, you may need to adjust the color saturation or ink density . D iscs from different manufactur ers may absorb ink differently , so you may need to adjust the density for each t ype of disc.
49 Maintaining Your Printer This chapter describes maintenance procedures to keep your printer working its best and preparation steps for mo ving your printe r .
50 Maintaining Your Printe r Cleaning the Print Head If your printouts ar e unexpectedly light or faint, or dots or lines ar e missing from the image, you may need to clean the print head. This unclogs the nozzles s o they can deli ver ink properly . Print head cleaning uses ink, so clean it only if quality declines.
Replacing an Ink Cartridge 51 If you don ’ t see any improv ement after cleaning three or four times, check the sol utions beginning on page 64. Y ou can also turn the printer off and wait overnight—this allows any dried ink to soften—and then try cl eaning the print head again.

Replacing an Ink Cartridge 53 4. Open the cartridge cover . 5. P ress in the tab on the back of the cartridge and lift the cartrid ge out of the printer . Dispose of it car efully . Warning: Keep ink cartridges ou t of the re ach of childre n and do not drink the ink.
54 Maintaining Your Printe r 7. Lower the cartridge into the holder , with the gr een circuit board facing the front. Then gently push the cartridge down until it clicks into place. 8. If you need to replace another ink cartridge, repeat steps 5 through 7 befor e continuing with step 9.
Aligning the Print Head 55 Aligning the Print Head If your printouts contain misaligned vertical lines or horizontal banding, you may need to align the print head. Y ou can align the print head either from the printer’ s control panel or using your printer software.
56 Maintaining Your Printe r Cleaning the Printer T o keep your printer working at its best, yo u should clean it several times a year . Follo w these steps: 1. T urn off the printer , unplug the powe r cord, and disconnect the printer cable. 2. Remo ve all paper , then use a soft br ush to clean any dust or dir t from the sheet feeder .
Transporting the Printer 57 Transporting the Printer If you mo ve your printer some distance, you ne ed to pr epare it for transportation in its original box or one of a similar siz e. Caution: To avoid dama ge, always leave the ink cartridge s installed wh en transportin g the printer.

Diagnosing Problems 61 Close the CD/DVD guide. Close the CD/DVD guide, then press the ( Maintenance button. If the CD/DVD tray is inserted, remove the CD/DVD tray, then close the CD/DVD guide. The CD/DVD tray is not set correctly. Reload the tray, then press the maintenance button.
62 Problem Solving Running a Printer Check Y ou may need to r un a printer check to see if a problem comes from the printer itself or some other source. 1. Make sure both the printer and computer ar e turned off. Then disconnect the printer cable from the printer .
Setup or Software Installation Problems 63 Setup or Software Installation Problems The printer makes noise a fter ink cartridge i nstallation. ■ The first time y ou install ink cartridges, th e printer must charge it s print head for about two minutes.
64 Problem Solving Printer Problems The printer is on, but nothing prints. ■ I f y ou’ r e p r i nt i n g fr o m y o u r c o m p ut e r, m ak e s u re t h e U SB c a b le i s c on n e c te d s e c u r e ly a n d that the cable meets the system requir ements on page 75.
Print Qualit y Problems 65 ■ In the Advanced options, turn Micr oWeave ® off and/or turn High S peed on. ■ If your printer is connected to a hub, disconnect USB devices that you ’ re not using. Note: Borderless printing takes longer than normal, e specially near the edges of the paper.
66 Problem Solving ■ The ink car tridges may need replacing. T o replace an ink cartridge, see page 51. ■ Run the P rint Head Alignment utility; see page 55 for instructions. Your printout is blurry or smeared. ■ U se Epson papers to ensure proper saturation and absorption of genuine E pson inks.
Print Qualit y Problems 67 Your printout is faint or has gaps in the image. ■ The print head nozzles may need cleaning; see page 50 for instructions.
68 Problem Solving Problems With Paper Feeding Paper doesn’t eject fully or is wrinkled. ■ If the paper doesn ’ t eject fully , you may have set the wrong paper size. P ress the b Maintenance button to eject the paper , then select the correct paper size.
Miscellaneous Printout Problems 69 ■ Make sure y ou ’ re using ink jet-printable CDs or DVDs. ■ Handle the disc carefully and allow the ink to dr y for at least 24 hours before playing the disc or inserting it in a drive. Printed CDs or DVDs are smeared or dirty.
70 Problem Solving Image size or position is incorrect. ■ Make sure paper and lay out options are set corr ectly . ■ Y our images may not match th e width/height proportions (aspect ratio) of the paper size or layout you ’ re using. Images may be cropped to fit the paper and layout.
Uninstalling Printer Software 71 4. In the next windo w , make sure your EPSON Stylus Pho to R320 icon is selected and click OK . Then follow the on-screen instructions. 5. In Windo ws 98 or Me, click EPSON USB Printer Devices in the program list and click the Add/Remove button.
