6 1.4.1 Give complete, undivided attent ion t o t he job at hand. 1.4.2 Mow only in daylight or in g ood artif icial light, k eeping away from holes or hidden hazards. DO NOT oper at e t he mower when children or others are in the area. 1.4.3 W hen f easible, avoid operating t he eq uipment in wet grass.
7 1.4.11 Keep hands, f eet , and clothing away from r ot ating part s while the mower is being operated. Keep clear of the discharg e opening at all time s. 1.4.12 Stop the eng ine, wait for all moving par t s t o st op, and remove the spark plug wire(s) and/or rem ove k ey: a) Bef or e check ing, cleaning , or working on t he m ower.
8 1.6 SA FETY SIGNS 1.6.1 Keep all safet y sig ns leg ible. Remove all grease, dir t and debris fr om saf ety signs and instr uct ional labels. 1.6.2 Safet y sig ns m ust be r eplaced if they are missing or illegible. 1.6.3 W hen new components are inst alled, be sur e t hat current saf ety signs are aff ixed to the replaced components.

10 FIGURE 1 3.1.3 Self- Propel Drive Bail : Located on the upper handle as shown in Figur e 1. W hen the self -propel drive bail is squeezed, the unit will move for ward at t he speed set on the speed control lever. W hen t h is bail is r eleased t he unit will stop moving.

13 NOTE: The blade cont rol lever will release rapidly when the blade control bail is released. T o avoid minor inj ury, keep hands clear of the blade control lever when the blade control bail is released.

HOW TO AVO ID THE HAZARD ♦ Stop the eng ine and wait f or all movement to stop bef ore adjusting t he cut t ing height.
16 3.3.9 Using the G r ass Bag : Occasionally, you may w ish t o use t he g rass bag f or bagg ing extra long gr ass, lush grass, or leaves. a) I nst alling the Grass Bag : 1. Stop the eng ine and wait f or all moving part s t o stop. 2. Open the rear door .

W HAT CAN HAPPEN ♦ Thrown objects can result serious personal injury or deat h t o t he oper ator or bystanders. HOW TO AVO ID THE HAZARD ♦ Never open the door to t he dischar g e opening when the engine is running .
18 Cutting Leaves : • Aft er cut t ing the lawn, ensure that half of t he lawn shows through t he cut leaf cover. You m ay need to m ak e more than one pass over the leaves. • For light leaf coverage, set all t he wheels at the same cutting heig ht setting .
19 CA UTION POTENT IAL HAZARD ♦ If you leave the wire on the spark plug , someone could accidentally start t he engine. W HAT CAN HAPPEN ♦ Accidental start ing of the eng ine could seriously injure you or other bystanders. HOW TO AVO ID THE HAZARD ♦ Disconnect the wire fr om t he spark plug befor e you don any maintenance.
20 c) Hold the running g arden hose a handle level and direct the water t o f low on the ground j ust in f ront of the rig ht r ear tire (Figur e 11) . FIGURE 11 d) Eng age the blade. NOTE : The blade will draw in water and wash out clippings. Let t he water run until you no longer see clipping being washed out from under t he housing.

22 h) I nst all t he foam pr e- cleaner . i) Install the new paper air f ilt er. j) Install the cover and secure it with the screw. 4.6 Maintaining t he Blade : Always mow with a sharp blade. A shar p blade cuts cleanly and without tearing or shredding t he g rass blades.

24 i) Re-install a sharp balanced Exmark blade, spacer , washers, and blade bolt as shown in Figure 16. The sail of the blade must point toward the top of t he lawn mower housing f or proper installat ion. T orque the blade bolt to 75-85 f t -lb (102-115 N-m ) .
25 e) O pen t he f uel valve to the open position. f) Drain the g asoline completely fr om the tank and f uel line into an approved f uel container. g) Rem ove the f uel tank f rom t he m ower.

31 5.4 Removing the Lawn Mow er f rom Stor ag e a) Check and tight all f asteners. b) Rem ove the spar k plug and spin the eng ine r apidly by pulling the start er r ope to blow excess oil fro the cylinder. c) Clean the spark plug or replace it if it is crack ed, br oken, or if the electr odes ar e wor n.
32 1. The wire is not c onnected to the spark plug. 1. Connect the wire to the spark plug. 2. The s park plug is pitted, f ouled, or the gap is incor rect. 2. Check the spark plug and adjust the gap if neces sary. Replace the spark plug if it is pitted, fouled, or c racked.
