Moving P arts This equipment has man y moving parts that can injure y ou or someone else. Ho we v er , if you sta y in the operator z one (sta y seated in the seat), and follo w the safety rules in this oper ator’ s manual, the unit is safe to operate .
Proper maintenance is critical to the saf ety and performance of your unit. Keep the unit free of grass , leav es, and e xcess oil. Be sure to perform the maintenance pr ocedures listed in this manual, especially periodically testing the safety s ystem.

• Grass catcher components are subject to wear , damage, and deterioration, which could e xpose moving parts or allow objects to be thrown. F requently check components and replace with manuf acturer’ s recommended parts, when necessary . • Check brak e operation fr equently .

W ARNING • Ne ver oper ate on slopes greater than 15°. • Select slow ground speed bef ore driving onto a slope . Use e xtra caution when operating on slopes with a rear-mounted grass catcher . • Mow across the f ace of slopes, not up and down, use caution when changing direction on slopes and do NO T start or stop on a slope.
W e suggest you begin with the Smooth T ra vel pr ocedure to the right, and then adv ance through the f orward, r e verse , and turning maneuvers . Y ou must release the parking brak e prior to moving the contr ol lev ers inwar d. Smooth T ra v el The lev er controls of the Zero T urn rider are responsiv e.
8 While tra veling f or ward allo w one handle to gradually r eturn back tow ard neutr al. Repeat se veral times. NO TE: T o prev ent piv oting directly on the tire tr ead, it is best to keep both wheels going at least slightly f or ward.
Height of Grass Often cutting height is a matter of personal pref erence . T ypically , you should mow the grass when it is between thr ee and fiv e inches high.
13 Where possible , make one or tw o passes around the outside of the area dischar ging the grass INT O the lawn to keep the cut grass off f ences and walk s. 14 The remainder of the mo wing should be done in the opposite direction so that the clippings ar e dispersed OUT onto the area of lawn pr e viously cut.
15 4. Disengage the parking brak e. The tr actor can no w be pushed by hand. 5. After moving the tr actor , re-engage the pumps (drive position) by turning the release v alv es clockwise and tighten to 80-120 in.
17 Ex cessive to wed loads can cause loss of traction and loss of control on slopes . Reduce to wed w eight when operating on slopes. The surface being driv en on greatly impacts traction and stability . W et or slipper y surfaces can greatly r educe traction and the ability to stop or turn.
6. Check crank case oil lev el and add proper oil if necessar y . If any condensation has de veloped during storage , drain crank case oil and refill. 7. Inflate tires to proper pr essure . Check fluid le vels . 8. Start the engine and let it run slowly .
Change Oil & Filter 1. W arm engine by running f or a fe w minutes. (R ef er to engine operator's manual f or oil & filter replacement instructions .) 2. Remo ve the oil drain hose (A, Figur e 19) from the cable clamp (B) on the right hand side of the frame the route the hose tow ards the r ear of the machine as shown in Figur e 19.
21 3. Look do wn the filler neck of the hy draulic oil reser voir (B) and observe the oil lev el. When cold, the oil le vel should be appro ximately 4” (10 cm) below top of the filler neck. 4. If necessary , add either Mobil 1™, 15W-50 synthetic oil or Castrol S yntec™ 5W-50 oil.
24 25 Lubricate the F ront C asters Interval: Annually 1. Remo ve the 1/4-28 bolt (A, Figur e 26) scre wed into the caster and install a 1/4-28 grease fitting. 26 2. Grease the front caster . 3. Remo ve the 1/4-28 gr ease fitting and reinstall the 1/4-28 bolt.
• The mow er blade is brok en or bent. 28 29 3. If the cutting edges are not sharp or ha ve nick s, sharpen the blades. See Sharpening the Mo wer Blades .
32 Ground Speed Contr ol L e v er Adjustment The control le v ers can be adjusted in three w a ys . The alignment of the control le v ers, the placement of the le vers (how close the ends are to one another) and the height of the le vers can be adjusted.
35 Mowing Height A djustment The cutting height adjustment pin (A, Figur e 36) controls the mow er cutting height. The cutting height is adjustable between 1-3/4” (4,4 cm) and 5” (12,7 cm) in 1/4” (0,64 cm) increments . 36 1. Depress the deck lift f oot pedal (B) until it locks into the 5” (12,7 cm) position.
• If the machine creeps backw ard, turn the r od counter-clockwise . 3. Lock the jam nut agains the ball joint when neutr al is achie ved. NO TE: This adjustment should not be performed while the machine is running. It ma y tak e se ver al attempts to achie ve neutral, depending on how much the machine creeps .
Deck Lift Rod Timing A djustment Checking the Deck Lift Rod Timing 1. P ark the machine on a flat, le v el surface. Disengage the PT O , stop the engine and engage the parking brake . V erify the tires are inflated to the corr ect pressur e. 2. Measure and recor d the distance between the lift piv ots (A, Figure 41) and the lift rods (B).
Determining if the Deck L ev eling Needs to Be Adjusted W ARNING A v oid Injury! Mower blades are sharp . Alwa ys wear glov es when handling blades or working near blades. 1. See Figure 45. P osition the outside mower blades so the y face fr ont-to-back.
Mow er Belt Replacement NO TICE T o av oid damaging belts, do not pry ov er pulle ys . 1. P ark the tractor on a smooth lev el sur face such as a concr ete floor . Disengage the PTO , engage the parking brak e, turn off the engine and remo ve the ignition k e y .

3. P osition the jack under the cross member that ties the suspension arms together and slowly raise the rear suspension to relie ve the pr essure on the upper shock mounting bolts. NO TE: This will requir e small adjustments to the jack’ s position.
Jump Starting With Auxiliar y (Booster) Batter y Jump starting is not recommended. How e ver , if it must be done, follo w these directions . Both booster and dis-charged batteries should be treated care fully when using jumper cables. F ollow the steps below EXA CTL Y , being careful not to cause sparks .
T roubleshooting the Rider Engage parking brak e. P arking brak e not engaged. Engine will not turnov er or start Place in OFF position. PT O (electric clutch) switch in ON position. If engine is hot, allow it to cool, then refill the fuel tank. Out of fuel.
T r oubleshooting Common Cutting Problems Problem: Streaking Remedy Cause Sharpen your blades . Blades are not sharp. Replace y our blades. Blades are worn do wn too far . Alwa ys mo w at full throttle . Engine speed is too slow . Slow down. Ground speed is too f ast.
