– 2 – I) INTR ODUCTION W e thank you for choosing a GSW or John W ood W ater Heater . Y our satisfaction with this product is very import ant to us. The design of this gas-fired water heater has been approved to provide pot able hot water or when combined with a suit ably-sized fan coil, baseboard heater , etc.
– 3 – CA UTION HYDR OGEN GAS can be produced in a hot water system served by this heater that has not been used for a long period of time (generally two weeks or more).
– 4 – L OCA TION: The location for top and bottom openings are as follows; For American inst allations: The top opening shall commence within 12” (30 cm) of the top of sp ace and the bottom opening shall commence within 12” (30 cm) of the bottom of the enclosure.
– 5 – III) GAS CONNECTIONS Inst all the gas piping as shown in Figure 4. Use only new pipe and fittings with clean-cut threads. Sealing compounds used on the pipe threads shall be approved for use with natural and prop ane gas. Use gas piping of adequate sizing to ensure full gas input.
– 6 – T empera tur e and Pr essur e R elief V alv e(T&P) For protection against excessive water pressure and/or temperatures, a temperature and pressure relief valve must be inst alled in the opening marked, “T&P V AL VE”.
– 7 – VI) LIGHTING AFTER INST ALLA TION W ARNING: T O A VOID POSSIBLE INJURY , FIRE AND EXPLOSION,READ THESE PRECAUTIONS BEFORE A TTEMPTING T O LIGHT OR RE- LIGHT THE PILOT . CHECK THA T THE HEA TER IS FILLED WITH WA TER AND THE VENTING SYSTEM IS UNOBSTRUCTED.
– 8 – SPECIAL NO TE ON PR OP ANE FUEL: L.P . GAS IS HEA VIER THAN AIR Should there be a leak in the system, the gas will settle at FLOOR LEVEL. Basement s, crawl sp aces, closet s and areas below ground level will serve as pocket s for the accumulation of the gas.
– 9 – Wa ter T emper a tur e Re gula tion The thermost at is adjusted to it s lowest temperature position when shipped from the factory . The temperature of the water can be selected by setting of the temperature dial on the front of the gas control.
– 10 – Discolor ed Wa ter • W ater rich in iron or other minerals can produce red or brown st aining. Heating water generally worsens this situation. • Black water can be an indication of organic cont aminates in the water supply . This can be problematic in areas where the water is obt ained from surface or cont aminated sources.
– 1 1 – VIII) HEA TING AND SP ACE HEA TING (COMBO HEA TING) This section serves as a guide for the inst allation and use of “Combo” heating systems utilizing a domestic water heater which has been specifically approved for such use.
