3 INTRODUCTION Introduction Thank you for choosing Harman Kardon! With the purchase of a Harman Kardon A VR 520 you are about to begin many years of listening enjoyment.
4 SAFETY INFORMA TION Safety Information Important Safety Information V erify Line V oltage Before Use Y our A VR 520 has been designed for use with 120-volt AC current. Connection to a line volt- age other than that for which it is intended can create a safety and fire hazard and may damage the unit.
5 FRONT P ANEL CONTROLS 1 Main P ower Switch: Press this button to apply power to the A VR 520. When the switch is pressed in, the unit is placed in a Standby mode , as indicated by the amber P ower Indicator 3 surrounding the System P ower Control 2 .
6 FRONT P ANEL CONTROLS Front P anel Controls was in use . Each subsequent press selects the next DTS mode in the following order: 7 Logic 7 Mode Selector / ‹ Button: T his button has two functions: In normal use, press it to select one of the Logic 7 modes .
7 FRONT P ANEL CONTROLS Front P anel Controls ı V olume Control: T urn this knob clockwise to increase the volume , counterclockwise to decrease the volume . If the A VR 520 is muted, adjusting volume control will automatically release the unit from the silenced condition.

9 FRONT P ANEL INFORMA TION DISPLA Y Front P anel Information Display input channels . F or standard analog inputs, only the L and R will light, indicating a stereo input. When a digital source is playing, the indicators will light to display the channels being received at the digital input.
10 REAR P ANEL CONNECTIONS ¡ AM Antenna: Connect the AM loop antenna supplied with the receiver to these terminals . If an external AM antenna is used, make connections to the AM and GND terminals in accordance with the instructions supplied with the antenna.
11 REAR P ANEL CONNECTIONS Rear P anel Connections ¤ Video Monitor Outputs: Connect this jack to the composite or S-Video input of a TV monitor or video projector to view the on-screen menus and the output of any standard video source selected by the receiver ’ s video switcher .

13 MAIN REMO TE CONTROL FUNCTIONS Main Remote Control Functions IMPORT ANT NO TE: The A VR 520 ’ s remote may be programmed to control up to eight devices , including the A VR 520. Before using the remote , it is important to remember to press the Input Selector Button e that corresponds to the unit you wish to operate .

15 ZONE II REMO TE CONTROL FUNCTIONS Zone II Remote Control Functions å P ower Off: When used in the room where the A VR 520 is located, press this button to place the unit in Standby . When it is used in a remote room with a sensor that is connected to the Multi IR jack f , this button turns the Multiroom system on and off .
System Installation After unpacking the unit, and placing it on a solid surface capable of supporting its weight, you will need to mak e the connections to your audio and video equipment.

When all audio , video and system connections have been made , there are a few configuration adjustments that must be made . A few minutes spent to correctly configure and calibrate the unit will greatly add to your listening experience .
19 SY STEM CONFIGURA TION System Configuration System Setup Once the speak ers have been placed in the room and connected, the remaining steps in the setup process are to program the A VR 520 ’ s ba.
20 SY STEM CONFIGURA TION since the A VR 520 memorizes the settings for each input individually , you will need to mak e these adjustments for each input used. However , once they are made , further adjust- ment is only required when system components are changed.
21 SY STEM CONFIGURA TION System Configuration Making this selection will set the surround mode options for the A VR so that only the cor- rect modes for the number of speak ers in your specific system will be available .

23 SY STEM CONFIGURA TION System Configuration If the front left/right speak ers are set to LARGE , three options are available: • If no subwoofer is connected to the A VR 520, press the ‹ / › Buttons o on the remote so that NONE appears in the on-screen menu.
Figure 6 If the Dolby Digital mode is selected, the CENTER DELAY line is where the first adjustment is made . In that case , press the ‹ / › Buttons o until the number calculated using the formula shown above appears in the display . When the CENTER DELAY is entered, press the ¤ Button n once to move to the next line .

26 OPERA TION Operation Surround Mode Chart MODE FEA TURES DELA Y TIME RANGE DOLBY DIGIT AL Available only with digital input sources encoded with Dolby Digital data. It provides up to five Center: 0 ms – 5 ms separate main audio channels and a special dedicated Low-F requency Effects channel.
27 OPERA TION Operation MODE FEA TURES DELA Y TIME RANGE HALL 1 T he two Hall modes create sound fields that resemble a small (HALL1) or Delay time not adjustable HALL 2 medium sized (HALL 2) concert hall.
28 OPERA TION Operation Basic Operation Once you have completed the initial setup and configuration of the AVR 520, it is simple to operate and enjoy .
29 OPERA TION Operation as Dolby Surround, DTS Stereo or UltraStereo ® may be played in either the Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II Cinema, DTS Neo:6 Cinema, or Logic 7 Cinema surround modes depending on the source material.
A VR 520 will automatically detect whether it is a multichannel Dolby Digital, DTS source, MP3 or a conventional PCM signal, which is the standard output from CD players . A Bitstream Indicator A will light in the Main Information Display Û to confirm that the digital signal is Dolby Digital, DTS or PCM.
31 OPERA TION Operation IMPORT ANT NO TES ON DIGIT AL PLA YBA CK: • When the digital playback source is stopped, or in a pause , fast forward or chapter search mode , the digital audio data will momentarily stop , and the channel position letters inside the Speaker/Channel Input Indicators Q will flash.

T he A VR 520 is equipped with a number of advanced features that add extr a flexibility to the unit ’ s operation. While it is not necessary to use these features to operate the unit, they provide additional options that you may wish to use .
35 ADV ANCED FEA TURES Advanced Featur es T o change the length of time that the semi-OSD displays remain on the screen, go to the ADVANCED menu as outlined earlier , and press the ⁄ / ¤ Buttons n as needed, until the on-screen › cursor is next to the SEMI OSD TIME OUT line .
36 MUL TIROOM OPERA TIONS Multiroom Oper ation T he A VR 520 is fully equipped to operate as the control center for a multiroom system with optional remote external infrared (IR) sen- sors , speakers and power amplifiers .
37 PROGRAMMING THE REMO TE Progr amming the Remote T he A VR 520 is equipped with a powerful remote control that will control not only the receiver ’ s functions, but also most popular brands of audio and video equipment, includ- ing CD players , cassette decks , TV sets, cable boxes , VCRs, satellite receivers and other home- theater equipment.

Notes on Using the A VR 520 Remote With Other Devices . • Manufacturers may use different code sets for the same product category . F or that rea- son, it is important that you check to see whether the code set you have entered oper- ates as many controls as possible .
