2 Opening Y our Dear Diary T o open your Dear Diary III, press and hold the button on the bottom front of the diar y and lift the colored lid. When closing the lid, make sure the latch clicks into the base.
3 Getting Y our Dear Diary III Ready ICONS YOU SHOULD KNOW Above are icons that you will see on your diar y screen. Learn to recognize them; you will be using them often. Following is a brief explanation of each. DEAR DIARY Y ou can store one message with up to 32 characters and four symbols for each calendar day for up to 40 days.
SPECIAL DA YS Y ou can record as many as 10 special days (bir thdays, anniversaries, dates, and other days) which have specia meaning. MEMO Y ou can store up to 5 memos, each having up to 40 characters. SECRET P ASSWORD Y our secret password locks cer tain files.
SECRETS Y ou can store up to 5 secrets, each having up to 40 characters. SHOPPING LIST Y ou can list your shopping needs, up to 120 characters. SCHEDULER T ells you the date and time and stores your appointment information. The scheduler rings an alarm to remind you of appointments.
6 SYMBOLS YOU SHOULD KNOW The following symbols appear on your Dear Diary III scr een: WORDS YOU SHOULD KNOW CHARACTER: Any letter , number , punctuation mark or space. CURSOR: The blinking line where any character is or where one can be entered. DELETE: Pressing this key removes the character or symbol above the cursor .
7 HOROSCOPE: A forecast of for tune based on the stars. ICON: A picture that represents one of the 15 files in your diar y . LETTER: Any letter A - Z . MENU: The 15 icons that identify the 15 files/functions in your diary . MODE: This is the way your diary is being operated.
8 BA TTERY INST ALLA TION Inserting/Replacing Batteries This diar y is powered by two 3V button-cell batteries, both of which ar e type CR2032. One of the main batter y , and the other is the back-up batter y . The main batter y provides power for normal operations.
9 W ARNING: YOUR MUST REPLACE THE MAIN BA TTERY BEFORE CLOSING THE BA TTERY COMP ARTMENT DOOR OR ALL FILES WILL BE LOST . 3. Wipe the sur faces of the new batter y with a soft, dr y cloth. Inser t the new batter y . The “+” should be facing you. Replacing Back-up Battery 1.
10 T o ensur e proper function: • Do not mix old and new batteries • Do not mix alkaline, standard or rechargeable batteries • Batter y installation should be done by an adult • Non-rechargeab.
HOW YOUR “DEAR DIARY III” WORKS CONTROLS AND INDICA TORS DISPLA Y/SCREEN – shows the information stored in your diar y ON – turns on the unit OFF – turns off the unit EDIT – used to change.
12 NUMERIC KEYBOARD – used to type numeric information in to your diar y , the decimal point is also used as a period in alphabetic entries ALPHA KEYBOARD – used to type alphabetic information int.
13 USING YOUR DEAR DIARY Remove the label adhered to the screen before using your diary . Reset Operations: By pressing the reset button, you can delete all the data previously input. The screen will prompt, CLEAR ALL? Y/N. By pressing Y (yes) all data will be deleted.
14 Procedur e 1. When you are in a file, press EDIT to select the edit mode. 2. The blinking cursor indicates where you can add a character . Y ou can delete characters in the edit mode and add new characters in their places. 3. When you type in a character , it is inser ted above the cursor .
15 EDITING DA TE The prompt MMDDYY asks you to enter a 6-digit date on the message line near the right side of the screen. Procedure: 1. When a date is prompted, the cursor appears under the first M. 2. T ype in six digits for month MM (01-12), date DD (01-31) and year YY (01, 02, etc.
16 EDITING TIME Cer tain files display the time for your convenience. Procedure: 1. T o edit the time, the prompt HHMM (hour/minutes) will appear on the top line of the screen. The second line will contain A or P (for AM or PM ) and the time that is currently set in the organizer .
17 INITIAL SCREEN Procedure: 1. Press ON the turn diar y on. 2. The initial screen displays: 3. If day , date and time are corr ect, go to step 6. T o set the day , date and time, go to step 4. 4. If the time has not been set, the display shows 1/01/01 MON 12:00 A and the clock symbol.
18 DEAR DIARY The DEAR DIARY file is where you make your diary entries.Y ou can store new diar y listings, edit existing information, or search and view entries you have made. Dear Diary messages may be locked, and can only be opened with your secret password.
19 6. Select today ’ s screen. *** does not appear; no message is stored. a) Press ENTER twice to start inputting a message. IMPORT ANT NOTE: If the password featur e is on, you will be prompted to key in the password. See page 28. Key in your secret password.
7. Making diar y entries for future days. a) Select today ’ s screen. b) Press to select tomor row ’ s screen. c) Y ou may store a message now; see step 6. d) For a future date, press ENTER . e) Diar y prompts you to enter the future date for the message.
CALCULA TOR Y our diar y includes a calculator so you can add, subtract, multiply or divide quickly and easily . Procedure: a) Press ON and ENTER (or press QUIT and ENTER if you are using another file) to access the Menu. b) Use ARROW KEYS to select the CALCULA TOR icon.
PHONE/ADDRESS The PHONE/ADDRESS is where you put the names, phone numbers, addresses and birth dates of up to 45 of your favorite people. This file may be locked, and can only be opened with your secret password. Procedure: 1. Press ON and ENTER (or press QUIT once or twice if you are using another file) to access the Menu.
6. ADDRESS? prompt appears. T ype your friend ’ s address (up to 40 characters). Press ENTER . 7. BIRTH? MMDD prompt appears. T ype your friend ’ s birth date MMDD (2 digits for month and 2 digits for day). 8. Example: Press 0806 for August 6. Press ENTER .
HOROSCOPE The HOROSCOPE file predicts luck and for tune for you or your friends for any date. Procedure: 1. Press ON and ENTER (or press QUIT once or twice if you are using another file) to access the Menu. 2. Use ARROW KEYS to select the horoscope icon.

SPECIAL DA YS Special days file lets you store a list of 10 special days. Y ou store each date followed by a shor t description (up to 15 characters). Put special days in any order you want. Y our special days are automatically arranged by year , then date.
MEMO Y our memo file stores up to 5 memos, each having up to 40 characters. Procedure: 1. Press ON and ENTER (or press QUIT once or twice if you are using another file) to access the Menu. 2. Use the ARROW KEYS to select the MEMO icon. Press ENTER . 3.
SECRET P ASSWORD If you would like to protect secrets in some of your files so that no one can read them except you, use a 4-character (letter or number) secret password. When activated, only by using the password can the dear diar y , phone/address, secrets, wishes, favorites, special days, and dislikes files be opened.
OFF - if you do not want to use the password, use ARROW KEYS to select OFF . (cursor will be under the word OFF). Pressing ENTER turns of f the password. EDIT - if you want to change the password, press ARROW KEYS to select EDIT (cursor will be under the word EDIT).
30 PLA Y A GAME Play the matching game to see how well you know your friends! The matching game pulls records from your phone/address book and displays a piece of information that matches a friend. See if you can guess who and win. Procedure: 1. MA TCHING GAME will scroll arcoss the screen.
31 WISHES The WISHES file lets you store up to 5 wishes, each having up to 40 characters. Y our wishes file may be locked, and can only be opened with your secret password. Procedure 1. Press ON and ENTER (or press QUIT once or twice if you are using another file) to access the Menu.
F A VORITES Y our favorites file stores up to 5 of your favorite things. Each favorite thing can be up to 15 characters long. This file may be locked, and can only be opened with your secret password. Procedure: 1. Press ON and ENTER (or press QUIT once or twice if you are using another file) to access the Menu.
9. Press DELETE to erase a favorite thing from file. 10. Press QUIT to return to the RECORD? prompt. Press QUIT twice to return to Menu. NOTE: Press QUIT once or twice at any time to return to Menu.
DISLIKES Y ou can store up to 5 things you dislike. Each thing can be up to 15 characters. This file may be locked, and can only be opened with your secret password. Procedure: 1. Press ON and ENTER (or press QUIT once or twice if you are using another file) to access the Menu.
HOMEWORK Y ou can store assignments for up to four different days. Each day ’ s assignments can have up to 50 characters. Procedure: 1. Press ON and ENTER (or press QUIT once or twice if you are using another file) to access the Menu. 2. Use the ARROW KEYS to select the HOMEWORK icon.
SHOPPING LIST List your shopping needs with up to 120 characters. Procedure: 1. Press ON and ENTER (or press QUIT once or twice if you are using another file) to access the Menu. 2. Use the ARROW KEYS to select the SHOPPING LIST icon. Press ENTER . 3.
SECRETS This file stores up to 5 of your secrets; each secret can have up to 40 characters. This file may be locked and can only be opened with your secret password. Procedure: 1. Press ON and ENTER (or press QUIT once or twice if you are using another file) to access the Menu.
SCHEDULER Y ou can store up to 7 appointments. Each appointment has a date and time and up to 15 letters for notes. Dear Diar y will ring an alarm for each appointment as a reminder . This feature is just like an alarm clock. It shows the current date and other dates to let you know that appointments are stored in the file.
CAUTION High temperature will destroy the unit. Do not leave unit in direct sunlight. Do not press the liquid cr ystal display and avoid heavy shock or the display may fail. Do not use a pencil or pin to press the reset button.Use a ball-point pen. Clean only with a piece of soft dr y cloth.
