F irs t- time setup Step 1 : Insert t he ba t ter y T o insert a primary battery: 1. T urn the computer upside down on a flat surface, with the battery bay to ward you. 2. Slide the battery 1 into the battery bay until it is seated. The battery release latches 2 automatically lock the battery into place.

F irs t- time setup When the computer recei ves A C power , the battery begins to charge and the battery light (on the front of the computer) turns on. When the battery is fully char ged, the battery light turns of f. Leav e the computer connected to e xternal po wer until the battery is fully charged and the battery light turns of f.

F irs t- time setup Step 4: Set up the softwa re After the computer is turned on, it will go through software setup. Follo w the on-screen instructions to set up the softw are. Note the follo wing points: ■ After you respond to the setup prompt, you must complete the entire setup process without interruption.

4 T roubl eshooting T roubl eshooting resource s If you experience computer problems, perform these troubleshooting steps in the order provided until the problem is resolved: ■ Refer to “Quick troubleshooting, ” the next section in this chapter .
T r oubleshooting Qui c k troubleshootin g The compu ter is unab le to s tart u p T o turn on the computer , press the po wer b utton. When the computer is turned on, the po wer light turns on. If the computer and the po wer light are not turned on when you press the po wer button, adequate po wer may not be a v ailable to the computer .
Tro u b l e s h o o t i n g The compu ter sc reen is bl ank If the computer is on but the screen is blank: the computer may be in the Sleep state or in Hibernation; the computer may not be set to display the image on the computer screen; or the display switch may not be functioning properly .
T r oubleshooting Soft war e is func tioning a bnormally Follo w these suggestions if the softw are becomes unresponsi ve or responds abnormally: ■ Restart the computer by clicking Start , clicking the arrow next to the Lock b utton, and then clicking Restart .

T r oubleshooting An e xtern al d evice i s n ot worki ng Follo w these suggestions if an e x ternal de vice does not function as expected: ■ T urn on the de vice as instructed in the de vice user guide. Some de vices may not be po wered by the computer , and must be turned on before the computer is turned on.

A Conn ec t to t h e Internet from y our home The computer includes hardware and software that allo ws you to connect to the Internet. Before you can access the Internet, you must choose an Internet service provider (ISP) and choose the type of Internet connection you want, such as broadband (wired or wireless) or dial-up.
Connec t to the Internet f r om y our home Using t he N e w Connec tion Wizard The Ne w Connection W izard w orks under the following conditions: ■ Y ou already have an account with an ISP . ■ Y ou have a disc from an ISP . ■ Y ou do not have an Internet account and would lik e to select an ISP from the list provided within the wizard.
Connect to the Internet from y our home ■ WLAN —Internet connection through a WLAN requires broadband wired service with an ISP as well as a wireless router (purchased separately). T o learn about setting up wireless access, see the HP W eb site at http://www .
B B ac k up and reco v ery Creating reco v er y disc s After setting up the computer for the first time, be sure to create a set of recov ery discs of the full factory image. The reco very discs are used to start up (boot) the computer and recov er the operating system and software to factory settings in case of system instability or failure.
Back u p and r eco ve ry T o create a set of recovery discs,: 1. Select Start > All Pr ograms > HP Backup & Recov ery > Backup & Recov ery Manager . 2. Click Next . 3. Click Cr eate a set of reco very discs (Recommended) , and then click Next .
Back up and r eco very Back up s u gg e st i o n s ■ Create a set of recovery discs using HP Backup & Reco v ery Manager . ■ Create system recovery points using HP Backup & Reco very Manager , and periodically cop y them to disc. ■ Store personal files in the Documents folder and back up these folders periodically .
