4 Removal and replacement procedures Preliminary replacement requirements Tools required You will need the following tools to comple te the removal and re placement procedures: ● Flat-bla ded screw .
Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure that c ables are placed in their prop er locations during the reassembly p rocess. Improp er cable placem ent can damage th e computer. Cables must be handle d with extreme care to avo id damage.
Grounding guidelines Electrostatic discharge damage Electronic componen ts are sensit ive to electrost atic discharge (ESD). Circuitry design and st ructure determine the deg ree of sensitiv ity.
Packaging and transporting guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines whe n packaging and transp orting equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts an d assemblies wi th conductive or approv ed containe rs or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include eith er a wrist strap o r a foot strap at a grou nded workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded system. Wrist straps are flexibl e straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±1 0% resi stance in the ground cords.
Component replacement procedures This chapter provides removal an d replacement proced ures. There are as many as 95 screws and screw locks, in 15 different sizes, that must be removed, replaced, or loosened when servicing the computer . Make special note of each screw and screw lock size and location du ring removal and repl acement.
Computer feet The computer feet a re adhesive -backed rubber pads . The feet are in cluded in the Rubber Kit, spare part number 641 831-001. The re are 6 ru bber feet that atta ch to the base enclo sure in the locati ons illustrated below.

SIM NOTE: This section applies on ly to computer models with WWAN capability. NOTE: If there is a SIM inserted in th e SIM slot, it must be remove d before disassembling the computer. Be sure that the SIM is reinserted in the SIM slot after reassembli ng the computer.
Display assembly components (pan el, bezel, webcam, microphone) All display assemblies include WL AN antenna transceivers and cables. WWAN models also include 2 WWAN antenna transceivers and cables.
3. To remove the display bezel, remo ve the two ru bber screw covers (1) and the two Phillips PM2.5×5.0 screws (2) in the bottom corners o f the display beze l. 4. Flex the to p (1) of the bezel, the inside edges of the left an d right sides (2) , and then th e bottom (3) of the bezel until it disengages from the displa y enclosure.
6. If it is necessary to replace the webcam module, ge ntly pull th e module away from the double- sided tape on the display enclos ure (1) , disconnect the webcam cable from the module (2) , and then remove the webcam.
8. If it is necessary to replac e the di splay panel, remove th e four Phillips PM2.5×5.0 screws (1) at the bottom of th e display panel. 9. Remove the two br oadhead Phillips PM 2.0×4.0 screws (2) at th e top of the display p anel. 10. Pivot the display pa nel upward until it sits at a 90 degree angle (3) .

Bottom door The bottom door is ava ilable in the Plastics Kit, spare pa rt number 641832-001. Before disa ssembling the co mputer, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.

5. Remove the ha rd drive (3) from the hard drive bay. 6. If it is necessary to re place the hard dr ive bracket, remove the two Phillips PM3.0 ×5.0 hard drive bracket screws (1) from each side of the hard drive (4 total screws). 7. Lift the bracket (2) straight up to remove it from th e hard drive.
Memory modules NOTE: Primary and expansion memory is insta lled in a stacke d configuration in the bo ttom of the computer. Description Spare part num ber 2-GB (PC3-10600, 13 33-MHz, DDR3) 621565-001 .
3. Remove the memory module (2) by pul ling the module a way from the slot at an angle. NOTE: Memory modules a re designed with a n otch (3) to prevent incorrect insertion into the memory module slot. NOTE: The computer uses tw o memory slots. Th e top slot houses th e expansion memory module and is shown in the first image below.

Modem module NOTE: The modem module spare part kit does not includ e a modem module cable. The mo dem module cable is in cluded in the Cable Kit, spare pa rt number 64183 0-001. See Ca ble Kit on page 25 for more Cable Kit spare part number i nformation.
Fan Description Spare part num ber Fan 641839-001 Before removing the fan, follow these step s: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
NOTE: To prop erly ventilate the comput er, allow at le ast a 7.6-cm (3-in) clea rance on the l eft side of the computer. The computer uses an electric fan for ventilation . Th e fan is controlled by a te mperature sensor and is designed to turn on automatically when high temp erature cond itions exist.
4. Pull the heat sink away from the si de of the compute r to remove it (3) . NOTE: Thoroughly clean thermal material fr om the surfaces of the proce ssor (1) and the heat sink (2) each time you remove the heat si nk. All heat sink and p rocessor spare part kits include ther mal material.
Processor NOTE: All processor spare part kits incl ude replacem ent thermal material. Description Spare part num ber AMD A8-3510M (2.5-GHz/1.5-GHz, 4-MB L2 cache, 45 W) 653358-001 AMD A6-3410M (2.3-GHz/1.6-GHz, 4-MB L2 cache, 45 W) 653357-001 AMD A4-3310M (2.
3. Lift the processor (2) straight up and remove it. NOTE: The gold tria ngle (3) on the processor must be aligne d with the triangle (4) em bossed on the processor slot when you install th e processor. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the processor.
5. Remove the bottom door (see Bottom door on pa ge 49 ). 6. Remove the fan (see Fan on page 64 ). 7. Remove the heat sink (see Heat sin k on page 65 ). Remove the keyboard: 1. Position the computer upside-down with the front toward you. 2. Loosen the three Ph illips captive screws that secure the keyboard to the computer.
3. Using a flat-blad e screwdr iver, press on the tab s along the bottom o f the computer to disengage the keyboa rd. 4. Position the computer right-side up with the front toward you. 5. Open the compute r as far as possible. 6. Lift and rotate the keyboa rd (1) until it rests upside -down on top of the Touch pad (2) .
8. Lift the keyboard connector l atch (2) , and then disconnect the keyboard cable from the system board (3) . 9. Remove the keyboard. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the keyboard.
4. Remove the batt ery (see Battery on page 42 ). 5. Remove the following compo nents: a. Bottom door (see Bottom do or on page 49 ). b. Hard driv e (see Hard drive on page 54 ) c. Optical drive (see Optical drive on page 50 ) d. WLAN module (see WLAN module on page 60 ) e.
4. Remove the 4 Torx PM2.5× 8.0 screws (1) from the rear of the computer. 5. Disconnec t the speaker cabl e from the system board connector (2) . 6. Release the bottom co ver by lifting the edge s until it disenga ges from the compu ter.
7. Remove the bottom cover from the computer. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the bottom cover. RTC battery Description Spare part num ber RTC battery 651948-001 Before r emoving th e RTC bat tery, foll ow these steps: 1.

Fingerprint reader board Description Spare part num ber Fingerprint reader board (includes cable) 642764-001 Before removing the fingerprint r eader board, follow these ste ps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
2. Disconnect the cable fr om the system board (1) , and then lift the board straight up an d off the computer (2 ) . Reverse this procedure to in sta ll the fingerprint rea der board.
Lid switch Description Spare part num ber Lid switch board ( includes cable) 642765-001 Before removing the lid switch, fo llow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
2. Disconnect the cable fr om the system board (1) , and then lift the lid switch and cabl e straight up and off th e computer (2) . Reverse this procedure to install the lid switch.
Speaker assembly Description Spare part num ber Speaker assembly 641840-001 Before removing the speaker assembly, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
3. Remove the speaker assembly (2) from the bottom cover. 4. Turn the bottom cover over, a nd then remove the speaker cabl e (1) from the routing path (2) in the bottom cover. Note that the cable routes fr om the bottom to the to p of the bottom cover.
RJ-11 connector cable NOTE: The RJ-11 connector cable is included in the Ca ble Kit, spare part number 641830-001. Before removing the RJ-11 connector cab le, follow these step s: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
3. Remove the RJ-11 conne ctor cable from the clips and routing channel (2) built into the base enclosure. 4. Remove the RJ-11 connecto r cable from the botto m cover.
Display assembly components (cable , antennas, hing es, enclosure) NOTE: This section describes removi ng compo nents that require yo u to completely remov e the display panel.
2. Disconnect th e display cable (1) and webcam cable (2) from the system board. 3. Remove the antenna s from the holes they route throug h in the computer (1) that secure the display assembly to the computer. 4. Remove the two Phillips PM2.5×4.5 screws (2) .
6. To remove the display bezel, remo ve the two ru bber screw covers (1) and the two Phillips PM2.5×5.0 screws (2) in the bottom corners o f the display beze l. 7. Flex the to p (1) of the bezel, the inside edges of the left an d right sides (2) , and then th e bottom (3) of the bezel until it disengages from the displa y enclosure.
11. Lift the display panel from the display enclosure (3) . 12. If it is necessary to remove the displ ay panel/ webcam ca ble, remove th e display cable from its routing path (1) and the webcam cable from its routing path (2) .
14. If you need to remove the hi nge covers from the displa y hinges, pull the hi nges toward one another to remove them. 15. If it is necessary to replac e the display hinges, remove the four Phillips PM2.5×3.0 screws (1) that secure each d isplay hinge to the display panel.
18. Lift the antennas (2) and cables (3) straight up out of the d isplay enclosure. CAUTION: When i nstalling the display a ssembly, be sure that the wi reless antenna cables are routed and a rranged pr operly. Failure to properly route the antennas can result in degrad ation of the computer's WLAN performance.
22. Remove the latching mechanism fro m the tabs that hol d it in place (3) , slide the mechanism until it clears the tabs (4) , and then lift the mechanism from the d isplay (5) . Reverse this procedure to rea ssemble an d install the d isplay assembly.

3. Remove the two Phillips PM2.5×4.5 screws (1) and the Phillips PM2.0×3.0 screw (1) that secures the system board to the base enclosure. 4. Lift the system board up at an angle (1) , and then lift the system board up and out of the computer (2 ) . 5.
Smart card reader Description Spare part num ber Smart card reader assembly 654823-001 Before removing the smart card reader a ssembly, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the co mputer. If you are unsure whether th e computer is off or in Hibe rnation, turn the computer on, and th en shut it down thr ough the operating system.
2. Press in on the smart card reader (1) , and then lift the reader sligh tly upward (2) while pulling it out of the slot (3) . Reverse this procedure to insta ll the smart card reader assemb ly. ExpressCard assembly Description Spare part num ber ExpressCard assembly 642763-001 Before removing the ExpressCard assemb ly, follow these step s: 1.

5 Computer Setup (BIOS) and System Diagnostics Using Computer Setup Computer Setup, or Basic Input/Ou tput System (BIOS), controls communication betwe en all the inpu t and output devices on the system (such as disk drive s, display, keyboard, mous e, and printer).
To exit Computer Setup menu s, choose one of the following method s: ● To exit Computer Setup menus without saving your chan ges: Click the Exit icon in the lower-left corn er of the screen, and then follow the o n-screen instructions.
Updating the BIOS Updated versions of the BIOS may be availabl e on the HP Web site . Most BIOS update s on the HP Web site are packaged in compressed files cal led SoftPaqs . Some download packa ges contain a file n amed Read me.txt, which contains information regarding installing and troubleshooting the file.
NOTE: If you connect your comp uter to a networ k, con sult the network administrator before installing any software upd ates, especially system BIOS up dates. BIOS installation procedures vary . Follow any instructions that are d isplayed on the scree n after the download is complete.
