Control-panel disp lay icons Icon Purpose Shows that a wired network connection exists. Shows that a wireless network connection exists. The signal strength is indicated by the number of curved lines. This is for infrastructu re mode. For more information, see Set up the prin ter for wireless communication.
Change printer settings Use the cont rol panel to change the printer’s mode a nd settings, print rep orts, or get help for the printer. TIP: If the printer is connected to a computer, you can also c.
Finding the printer model number In addition to the mod el name that appears on the front of the printer, this printer has a specific model n umber. Use this number to obtai n support and to identif y the supplies and accessories available for your printer.
Recommended papers for printing and copying If you want the best print quality, HP recommends u sing HP papers that are specifical ly designed for t he type of project you are pri nting. Depending on your cou ntry/region, some of th ese papers might not be a vailable.

• When loading the trays an d ADF, make sure the media is loaded correctly. For more information, see Load medi a or Load an original in the aut omatic document feeder (ADF). • Do not overload the t ray or ADF. For more information, see M edia specifications.
3. Close the lid . Load an original in the auto matic document feeder (ADF) You can copy, scan, or fax a one -sided, single- or mul tiple-page, A4- or Letter-size document by placing it in the automatic document feeder tray. CAUTION: Do not load photos in the ADF; th is might cause damage to your photos.
2. Slide the width gui des inward until they stop at t he left and right edges of t he media. NOTE: Remove all origin als from the document feede r tray before lifting the lid on the printer. Load media This section provide s instructions for loading m edia into the print er.
3. Insert the media print-side down al ong the right of the main tray. Make sure the media aligns with the ri ght and back edges of th e tray and does not excee d the line marking in the tray. 2 1 NOTE: Do not load paper whi le the printer is printing.
Load Envelopes To load envelop es Use these inst ructions to load an envelope 1. Lift the outpu t tray. 2. Slide the pape r width guide ou t as far as possible. NOTE: If you are loading large r-sized media, pull th e input tray to extend it. 3. Load envelopes according to th e graphic.
5. Lower the output t ray. 6. Pull out the tray e xtender. Load cards and ph oto paper To load car ds and photo paper Use these instructions to load photo paper. 1. Lift the o utput tray. 2. Slide the paper widt h guide out as far as possibl e. NOTE: If you are loadin g larger-sized media, pull the in put tray to extend it.
Load tran sparencies To load tran sparencies Use these instructions to load tra nsparencies. 1. Lift the outpu t tray. 2. Slide the pape r width guide ou t as far as possible. NOTE: If you are loading large r-sized media, pull th e input tray to extend it.

Maintain the printer This section provides i nstructions for keeping the prin ter in top working condi tion. Perform these maintenance procedures as necessary.
3. Clean the glass by usi ng a soft, lint-free cloth t hat has been sprayed with a mild g lass cleaner. Dry th e gl ass with a dry, so ft, lint-free cloth. CAUTION: Use only glass cleaner to clean the scanner gla ss. Avoid cleaners that cont ain abrasives, acetone, be nzene, and carbon tetra chloride, all of wh ich can damage the sca nner glass.
If you have li nes or dust appearing on scann ed documents or faxes, clea n the plastic strip in the ADF. To clean the r ollers or separator pad 1. Remove all originals from the d ocument feeder tray. 2. Lift the automat ic document feeder cover (1). This provides easy a ccess to the rollers (2) and sepa rator pad (3).
To clean the plastic strip inside the automatic docu ment feeder Use these instructions to clean the plastic strip inside t he ADF. 1. Turn off the pr inter and unplug the power cord. F or more information, see Turn off the printer. NOTE: Depending how long the printer is unplugged , the date and time m ight be erased.
3. Continue lift ing the automatic documen t feeder cover to the vertic al position. 4. Lift the auto matic document feeder m echanism. 5. Clean the plastic strip with a so ft cloth or sponge slig htly moistened with a nonabrasive glass cleaner.
6. Gently lower the automatic document feede r mechanism to avoid dislodgi ng the plastic strip, and t hen close the cover of the autom atic document feeder. 7. Plug in the p ower cord, and then turn on the p rinter. NOTE: If you still see dust or lines on scans after cleani ng the plastic strip, you may need to order a new plastic stri p.
2P r i n t Most print sett ings are automatically hand led by the softwa re application. Cha nge the settings manu ally only when you want to chan ge print quality, print on spe cific types of paper, or use special feat ures. For more information about selecting t he best print media for your documents, see Select print media.
Print document s (Windows) 1. Load paper in the tra y. For more information, see L oad media. 2. On the File menu in your software application , click Print . 3. Make sure the printer you want t o use is selected. 4. To change settings, cli ck the option that opens t he printer Properties dialog box.
5. Change the paper ori entation on the Layout tab, and paper source, media type, pap er size, and qualit y settings on the Paper/Quality tab. To print in black and white, click the Adva nced tab, and then change th e Print in Grayscale option. 6. Click OK .
6. Click the Paper/Quality tab, and the n select the appropriate e nvelope type from th e Paper Size drop-down list. TIP: You can change m ore options for the print job by using the features available on th e other tabs in the dial og box. 7. Click OK , and then click Print or OK to begin printing.
4. Click Paper Type/ Quality from the pop-up menu (locat ed below the Orient ation setting), and then se lect the following set tings: • Paper Type: The appropri ate photo paper type • Quality: Bes t or Maximum dpi NOTE: Click the blue disclo sure triangle next to t he Printer selection to access these optio ns.
- or - a . Touch a photo you want to print. The photo enlarges and gives you several editing options. • Touch the up and down arrows to specify the number of copies you want t o print. • Touch the Full Screen icon to enla rge the ph oto to fil l the screen.
NOTE: With certain types of paper, you can print on both sides of a sheet of paper (called “two-sided printi ng” or “duplex printing”). Fo r more information, see Two-si ded printing (dup lexing). Follow the instructions for your operating system.
Print borderless documents (Windows) 1. Load paper in the tra y. For more information, see L oad media. 2. On the File menu in your software application , click Print . 3. Make sure the printer you want t o use is selected. 4. To change settings, cli ck the option that opens t he printer Properties dialog box.
Follow the in structions on the printer’s cont rol panel to enable an d set up the print er’s Web Services. For more informati on, see www.hp.com/go/ePrintCenter. Two-sided printing (duplexing) With certain ty pes of paper, you can print on b oth sides of a sheet of pa per (called “two- sided printing” o r “duplex printing”).
3 Scan You can use the printer’ s control panel to scan documents, photos, and other orig inals and send them to a variety of de stinations, such as a folder on a computer. You can also scan these original s from your computer using eith er the HP software provided w ith the printer or TWAIN-compliant or WIA-complian t programs.
3. Touch Docume nt Type to select the type of document you want to save. Make changes to scan opt ions, if needed. 4. Touch Start Scan . To scan an original from HP prin ter software 1. Load your original print-side down in the right -front corner of the glass or in the ADF.
To scan an original from the printer contr ol panel Use the followin g instructions to scan a large docume nt. 1. Touch Scan , and then select the Memory Device . 2. Touch Document Type to choose the type of docu ment you want to save. Make changes to scan op tions, if needed.
Scan using Webscan Webscan is a feature o f the embedded Web server that lets you scan photos and documents from your pri nter to your computer using a Web browser. T his feature is available even if you did n ot install the p rinter software on you r computer.
◦ The text is tightly sp aced. For example, if the text that the software converts has missing or combined charact ers, "rn" might appear as "m ." ◦ The text is on a colored background. Co lored backgrounds can cause i mages in the foregroun d to blend too much.
4 Copy You can produce high-qua lity color and grayscale copies on a variety of paper types and sizes. NOTE: If you are copying a docu ment when a fax arrives, the fax is sto red in the printer's memory unt il the copying finishes. This can reduce the numbe r of fax pages stored in memo ry.
3. Touch the A3/11x17 ch eckbox on the Copy screen, and then select Settings to change any other copy setting s. 4. Select Black to m ake a black-and-white copy, or Color to make a color copy. 5. Select the size of th e original. 6. Load the origina l according to the animation, and then select Scan .
5F a x You can use the printer to se nd and receive faxes, incl uding color faxes. You can schedule faxes to be sent at a later time and set u p speed-dials to send faxes quickly and easily to frequent ly used numbers.
NOTE: If you need printe d confirmation that your faxes were successfully sent, enable fax confir mation before sending any faxes. TIP: You can also se nd a fax manually from a phone or by using monitor dialing. These features all ow you to control the pace of your diali ng.
6. Click Print or OK . 7. Enter the fax numbe r and other information for the re cipient, change any further settings for the fax, and then click Send Fax . The printer begin s dialing the fax number and faxing the document. Mac OS X 1. Open the documen t on your computer that you w ant to fax.
4. If the recipient answ ers the telephone, you can engage in a conversation before sending your fax. NOTE: If a fax machine an swers the call , you will he ar fax tone s from the receiving fax machine. Pro ceed to the next step to transmit the f ax. 5.
you can immediately rem ove the originals from the document fe eder tray or scanner glass. NOTE: You can only send a black-and-wh ite fax from memory. To send a fax from memory 1. Load your origin als. For additional inf ormation, see Load an ori ginal on the scann er glass or Load an orig inal in the automatic document feeder (ADF).
To cancel a sc heduled fax 1. Touch the Send Fax Later message on the display. – OR – Touch Fax , and then select Fax Settings . 2. Touch Cancel Sche duled Fax . Send a fax to mu ltiple recipien ts You can send a fax to mult iple recipients at once by grouping individual speed dia l entries into group speed dial ent ries.
Receive a fax You can receive fa xes automatically or manually. If you turn off the Auto A nswer option, you must receive faxes man ually. If you turn on the Au to Answer option (the de fault setting), the pri nter automatically answers incoming calls and receives faxes after the number of ring s that are specified by the Rings to Answer se tting.
4. If you are currently on the pho ne with the sender, instruct the sender to press Start on their fax machine. 5. When you hear fax tones from a sending fax machine, do the f ollowing: a . Touch Fax , and then select Sta rt Black or Start Color . b .
NOTE: After the memory becomes full, the ol dest , printed faxes are overw ritten as new faxes are received. I f all the stored faxes are unprinted , the printer does not receive any fax calls until you print or delet e the faxes from memory. You might also want to del ete the faxe s in memory for security or pri vacy purpose s.
4. Touch On (Print and Forw ard) to prin t and forward th e fax, or select On (Forward) to forward the fax. NOTE: If the printer is not able to forward the fax to th e designated fax machine (for example, if it is not turned on), t he printer prints the fax.
Block un wanted fax n umbers If you subscribe to a caller ID service thro ugh your phone provider, you can block speci fic fax numbers so the printer does not print faxes re ceived from those numbers.
4. Touch Remo ve Numbers . 5. Touch the number you want to remove, and then select OK . Print a Junk Fax Report Use the followin g procedure to print a list of blocked ju nk fax numbers. To print a Junk Fax Repor t 1. Touch right arrow , and then sele ct Setup .
Activate Fax to PC and Fa x to Mac On a computer run ning Windows, you can use the Digi tal Fax Setup Wizard to acti vate Fax to PC. On a Macintosh com puter, you can use the HP U tility. To set up Fax to PC (W indows) 1. Open the HP printe r software .
Turn off Fax to PC or Fax to Mac 1. Touch (right arrow), and t hen select Setup . 2. Touch Fax Setup , touch Basic Fax Setup , and th en touch Fax to PC . 3. Touch Turn Off . Set up speed-dial entries You can set up frequentl y used fax numbers as speed-d ial entries.
4. If you want to change the fax number, type the new num ber, and then touch Next . NOTE: Be sure to include any pau ses or other required numbers, such as a n area code, an access code fo r numbers outside a PBX system (usually a 9 or 0), or a long-distance prefix.
Print a list of speed-dial e ntries To print a list of all of the speed-dial entrie s that have been set up, compl ete the following steps: 1. Load paper in the tra y. For more information, see L oad media. 2. On the printer’s cont rol panel, touch right arrow , and then touch Setup .
To set the answer mode 1. Touch right arro w , and then select Set up . 2. Touch Fax Setup , and then select Basic Fax Setup . 3. Touch Auto A nswer , and then select On or Off . When Au to Answer is On , the p rinter answers call s automatically. When Auto Answer is Off , it does not answer calls.
NOTE: The printer cannot receive faxes when the main phon e number is off the hook. To change the answ er ring pattern for distinctive r ing 1. Verify that the printer is set to answer fax call s automatically. 2. Touch right arrow , and then sele ct Setup .
Set the red ial options If the printer was una ble to send a fax because the receiving fax machine d id not answer or was busy, the p rinter attempts to redial based o n the settings for the busy-redia l and no-answer-redi al options. Use the follow ing procedure to turn the opt ions on or off.
Set the fax soun d volume Use this procedure to increase or decrease the volume of the fa x sounds. To set the fax sound volume 1. Touch right arrow , and then sele ct Setup . 2. Touch Fax Setup , and th en select Basic Fax Setu p . 3. Touch down arrow , and then se lect Fax Sound Volume .
TIP: Support for traditi onal fax transmission over an y Internet protocol telep hone systems are often limited. If you experience problems faxing, tr y using a slower fax speed or disabl ing the fax error-correctio n m ode (ECM). However, if you turn off ECM, you cannot send and receive color faxes.
NOTE: You can include an image of the first page of the fax on the F ax Sent Confirmation rep ort if you choose On (Fax Send) or On (Send and Receive ) , and if you scan the fax to send from memory. To enable fax confirmati on 1. Touch right arrow , and then sele ct Setup .
Print and view the fax log You can print a log of faxes that have been received an d sent by the printer. To print the fax log from the printer co ntrol pane l 1. Touch right arro w , and then select Set up . 2. Touch Fax Setup , touch down arrow , and then sele ct Fax Reports .
To view the Call History 1. Touch right arrow , and then sele ct Fax . 2. Touch (Call History). Use reports 71.

7 Work with ink cartridges To ensure the best print qu ality from the print er, you will need to perform some si mple maintenance procedure s. This section provides guidelines for han dling the ink cartridges, instructions for replacing the ink cartrid ges, and aligning and cleaning the print head.
• Handle ink cartridg es carefully. Dropping, jarring, or rough ha ndling during installatio n can cause temporary printing problems. • If you are transpo rting the printer, do the f ollowing to prevent ink leaking from the printer or other d amage from occurring to the printer: ◦ Make sure you tu rn off the printer by pressing Power .
NOTE: At this ti me, some porti ons of the HP W eb site are a vailable in English only. CAUTION: Wait until you ha ve a new ink cartridge available before removing the old ink cartri dge. Do not leave the ink cartridge outside of the printer for an extended period of time.
5. Twist the orange cap t o snap it off. NOTE: Make sure the p lastic tab is entirely remo ved and that the label is slightly torn, revealing th e vent channel. 6. Using the colored shaped icons for help, slide t he ink cartridge into the empt y slot until it clicks into pl ace and is seated firmly in the slot.
Make sure that you insert th e ink cartridg e into the slot that ha s the same shaped ico n and color as the one you a re installing. 7. Repeat steps 3 throug h 6 for each i nk cartridge you are re placing.

8 Solve a problem The informatio n in this section suggests solutions to comm on problems. If your print er is not operating co rrectly and those suggesti ons did not solve your proble m, try using one of the followin g support services to obtain assi stance.
Obtain electronic suppo rt To find support and warran ty informati on, go to t he HP Web site at www.hp.com/ support. If prompted, choose your cou ntry/region, and then click Contact HP for information on cal ling for technica l support.

Check the mar gin settings Make sure the margin set tings for the document do no t exceed the printable area of the printer. For more information, see Set minimum margins. Check the color print settings Make sure Print in Grayscale is not selected in the printer driver.
Make sure that you rem ove all paper from the in put tray before l oading the envelopes. Cause: A stack of enve lopes was loaded in correctly. If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 2: Check the envelope type Solution: Do not use shiny or embossed envelo pes or envelopes that have cla sps or windows.
Solution 1: Turn on the printer Solution: Look at the Power light located o n the print er. If it is not lit, the pr inter is turned off. Make sure the power cord is firmly connected to the prin ter and plugged into a power outlet. Press the Power button to turn on the print er.
Some documents t ake a long time to print. I f nothing has printed several minutes after you sent a print job to the pri nter, check the printer's control panel to se e if there are any errors. Cause: The printer was busy with a nother task. If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution.
Solution 9: Check the co nnection from the printer to your compu ter Solution: Check the c onnection from the prin ter to your co mputer. V erify that t he USB cable is securely plugged int o the USB port on the back of the pri nter. Make sure the other end of the US B cable is plugged into a USB port on yo ur computer.
The printer prints meaningless characters Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue. Solut ions are listed in order, with the most likely solution f irst. If the first solution d oes not solve the problem, continue trying the remaining soluti ons until the issue is resolved.
Make sure the margin set tings for the document do not exceed t he printable area of the printer. To check your marg in settings 1. Preview your print job befo re sending i t to the printer. In most software ap plications, click the File me nu, and then click Print Preview .
• Solution 3: Load th e stack of papers correctly • Solution 4: Try print ing with borders Solution 1: Check th e margin settings Solution: Check the printer margins. Make sure the margin setti ngs for the document do not exceed the prin table area of the printer.
Remove the stack of paper fro m the input tray, and then reloa d the paper. For more information, see: Load medi a Cause: The paper w as loaded incorrectly. If this did not solve the issue, try the next so lution. Solution 4: Try printing with borders Solution: Try printing with bo rders by turning off the borderless opt ion.
Solution 3: Check th e ink levels Solution: The ink cartridge s may be running low on ink. Cause: Ink levels are too low. Solution 4: Clean the pri nthead Solution: Complet e the printhead cleaning pr ocedure. For more informati on, see Clean the p rinthead.
Solution 2: Make sure the pape r is loaded corr ectly Solution: Make sure th at the paper is l oaded corre ctly in the inp ut tray. For more information, see: Load medi a Cause: The paper w as not loaded correctly. If this did not solve the issue, try the next so lution.
If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 5: Check for a paper jam Solution: Check for pap er debris in the front of t he printer. Remove any debris you find. CAUTION: Trying to clear a pa per jam from the f ront of the print er can damage the print mechanism.
Wrong, inaccurate, or b leeding colors If your printout has one of the follow ing print quality problems, t ry the solutions in thi s section for help. • Colors look w rong For example, green w as replaced with blue in your printout. • Colors run into ea ch other, or look like they are smeared on the page.
If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 3: Check the pap er type Solution: HP recommend s that you use HP papers or any other paper type that is appropriate for t he printer. Always make sure the paper you are printing on is flat.
Solution 5: Check the print settings Solution: Check the print settings. • Check the print setting s to see if the color setti ngs are incorre ct. For example, check to see if the document is set to pr int in grayscale.
After cleaning th e printhead, print a print quali ty report. Evaluate the print quality report to see if the print quality problem still exists. For more information, see: • Printhead mainten ance • Print and evaluat e a print quality report Cause: The printhead needed to be clea ned.
Solution 2: Check the in k levels Solution: Check the estima te d ink levels in the ink cartridges. NOTE: Ink level alerts and indicators provide estim ates for planning purposes only. When you rece ive a low-ink alert, consider having a replacement cartridge available to avoi d possible printing delays.
After cleaning th e printhead, print a print quali ty report. Evaluate the print quality report to see if the print quality problem still exists. For more information, see: • Printhead mainten ance • Print and evaluat e a print quality report Cause: The printhead needed to be clea ned.
Solution 2: Use a higher pri nt quality setting Solution: Check the print quality set ting and make sure it is not set too low. Print the image with a high print quality setting, such as Best or Maximum dpi . Cause: The print qu ality setting was set too low .
If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 3: Check th e ink levels Solution: Check the estimated ink leve ls in the ink cartr idges.
If prompted, choose your country/reg ion, and then click Co ntact HP for information on calling for techni cal support. Cause: There was a problem with the printhea d. Printouts are fa ded or have dull colors Try the followin g solutions if the colors in your printout are not as bright and intense as you expected.
NOTE: Ink level alerts an d indicators provide estimates f or planning purposes only. When you receive a l ow-ink alert, consid er having a repla cement cartridge available to avoid possi ble printing delays. You do not need to replace the in k cartridges until print quality becomes unaccepta ble.

Large Black Font Te xt Look at the large- font text above the color blocks. I ABCDEFG abcdefg The type should be sharp and clear. If the type is jagged, try aligning the printer. If there are streaks or smears of ink, clean the printhead. Example of good Large-Font Type The letters are sharp and clear - the p rinter is operating correctly.
Examples of a bad alignment pattern The lines are jagged - align the printer. If tha t does not work, contact HP. If you see no defe cts If you do not see any de fects on the print quality report, th en the printing system is working correctly.
3. Remove all of the ink cart ridges and place them on a piece of paper with the ink opening point ing up. 4. Lift the latch ha ndle on the print carriage.
6. Clean the printhead. There are three ar eas of the printhead that need to be cleaned: the plastic ramps on both sides of the i nk nozzles, the edge between t he nozzles and the electrical contacts, and th e electrical contacts.
b . Use a fresh, lightly da mpened, lint-free cloth to wipe an y accumulated ink and debris from the edge between the nozzles and the contacts. c . Use a fresh, light ly dampened, lint-free cloth to w ipe the plastic ramps on both sides of the nozzles.
7. Clean the ele ctrical contac ts inside the prin ter. To clean the el ectrical contacts in the pr inter a . Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free clot h with bottled or d istilled water. b . Clean the electrical cont acts in the printer by wipin g with the cloth from top t o bottom.
10. Using the col ored shaped icons for help, slid e the ink cartridge into the e mpty slot until it clicks into pl ace and is seated firmly in the slot.
The print carriage m oves to the center of the printer. NOTE: Wait until the p rint carriage stops moving before proceeding. 4. Remove all of th e ink cartridges and place the m on a piece of paper wi th the ink openings point ing up. To remove the in k cartridges a .
6. Install each ink cartridge in its slot. Press it down until the t ab snaps into place. Match the color and icon on each ink cart ridge label to the color and icon on the slot for that ink cartridge. 7. Close the ink cartri dge access door, and check if the error has been resolved.
Media is not coming out c orrectly • Make sure the out put tray extender is fully extended ; otherwise, printed pag es may fall off the print er. NOTE: When printing documents la rger than A3/11 x 17 inches, e xtend the output tray extend er all the way and tilt th e paper stopper.
Multiple pages are bein g picked up • Fan the media b efore loading. • Make sure the pap er guides are set to the correct marki ngs in the tray for the m edia size you are loading. Also make sure the guides are snug, b ut not tight, against the stack.
Copies are blank • Check the media The media migh t not meet Hewlett-Packard media spe cifications (for example, the media is too moist or too rough). See Media spe cifications for more information. • Check the settings The contrast setting might be set too light.
Copy quality is poor • Take steps to impro ve the copy quality ◦ Use qualit y originals. ◦ Load the media correctl y. If the media is loaded incorrectly, it might skew, causing unclear images. See Media specifications for more inf ormation. ◦ Use or make a carrier sheet to pro tect your origi nals.
The printer p rints half a page, then ejects th e paper Check the ink cartridges Make sure the correct ink cartridg es are installed and the ink cartridges are not low on ink. For more in formation, see Printer management too ls and Check the estimated in k levels.
Scan takes too long • Check the setting s ◦ If you set the resolut ion too high, the scan job takes longer and re sults in larger files. To obtai n good results when scanning or copyi ng, do not use a resolution that is higher tha n needed. You can lower the resolut ion to scan more quickly.
Text cannot be edite d • Check the settings ◦ When you scan the orig inal, make sure that you select a document type that creates editable text . If text is classified as a graphic, it is n ot converted to text.

Solve problems using HP Web sites If you are having problems using HP Web si tes from your computer, check the following: • Make sure the co mputer that you are using is co nnected to the network. • Make sure the Web browser me ets the minimum system requireme nts.
Solve wired (Ethernet) network probl ems If you are unable to co nnect the printer to your wired (Ethernet) netw ork, perform one or more of the foll owing tasks.
Solve wireless problems If the printer is unabl e to communicate with the network af ter completing the wireless setup and HP soft ware installation, perform on e or more of the following ta sks in the order shown below.

Another common problem is that HP soft ware is not set as a trusted software by your firewall to access the netw ork. This can happen if you answ ered “block“ to any firewall dialog boxes that appeared when you installed t he HP software.
