Drive handling CAUTION: Drives are fragile components that must be handle d with care. To prevent damage to the computer, damage to a d rive, or loss of informa tion, observe these precautio ns: Before removing or inserting a hard dri ve, turn off the computer.

Component replacement procedures This chapter provides removal an d replacement procedures. There are a numbe r of screws that must be re moved, replaced, or l oosened when servicing the computer. Make special note of each screw and screw lock size and location during removal and replacement.
Battery Description Spare part number 4 cell, 37 Whr, 2.55 Ah Li-ion battery 695192-001 Before disa ssembling the compu ter, follow these steps: 1. Shut down the computer.
2. Reset th e batter y release l ock (2) to the locked position. Computer feet Description Spare part number Rubber Feet Kit 697906-001 The computer feet a re adhesive-backe d rubber pads. There are 5 rubber feet that att ach to the base enclosure in the locations illustrated below.

3. Remove the display bezel (4) . 4. Remove the four Phillips scr ews for the display panel. NOTE: Support the displa y panel as you lean the panel forward. 5. Move the panel toward the keyboard (1) . 6. Release the adhesive supp ort strip (2) that secures th e display panel cable connecto r to the display panel.
7. Disconnect th e display panel cab le (3) from the di splay panel, and then remo ve the panel (4) . Reverse this procedure to rep lace the panel. Keyboard NOTE: The keyboard spare part kit inclu des a keyboard cable.
3. Disconnect th e power from the comp uter by firs t unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet and then unpl ugging the AC adap ter from the compute r. 4. Remove the batt ery (see Battery on page 20 ). Remove the keyboard: 1. Remove the two Phillips screws that se cure the keyboard to the computer.
2. Turn the compute r right-side up wi th the front to ward you. Op en the displa y and stand the computer on its ri ght side. Insert a thin to ol through the keyboard a ccess hole. (The keyboard icon indicates the keyboa rd access hole.) Push firml y on the bottom of th e keyboard until it disengages from the compute r.
4. Gently slide your finge r along the top edge of th e keyboard to release th e keyboard clips. Lift up on the rear of the keyboard. 5. Tilt the keyboard forward (1) onto the palm rest. Release the zero insertion force (ZIF) connecto r (2) to which the keybo ard cable is attached, and then disconnect the keyb oard cable (3) from the system board.
Reverse this procedure to insta ll the keyboard. Top cover NOTE: The top cover spare pa rt kit includes the TouchPa d support, TouchPad board and TouchPad cabl e. 2. Disconnect th e power butto n cable (1) and the TouchPad cable (2) . 3. Close the display and turn the computer upside down. 4. Remove the eight Phillip s screws from the bott om of the computer.
6. Gently lift aroun d the edges of the top cover (1) and lift to remove the top cover (2) . When replacing the top cover, be sure that the following co mponents are remo ved from the defective top cover and installed on the replacemen t top cover: ● Power button board and cable (see Power b utton board on pag e 30 ).
Remove the powe r button board: 1. Turn the top cover upside down, with th e front toward you . 2. Remove the Phillips screw (1) and tape that secure the powe r button board to th e top cover.
Hard dr ive NOTE: The hard drive spare part kit do es not include t he hard drive cable , or hard drive bra cket and screws. Description Spare part number 9.5 mm (0.37 in) × 6.35 cm (2.50 in) , 320 GB, 5400 rpm, SATA 622643-005 7.0 mm (0.28 in) × 6.
2. Remove the two Phillips screws (1) . Lift the hard drive (2) to remove and di sconnect the h ard drive cable (3) . 3. Remove the four Phillips screws (1) , and then remove the bracket (2) from the hard drive. To install a hard drive, reverse the remo val procedure.

2. Remove the Phillips screw (2) that secures the WLAN module to the system board. (The WLAN module tilts up.) 3. Remove the WLAN modu le by pulling the module awa y from the slot at an a ngle (3) . NOTE: The WLAN module is designe d with a notc h to prevent incorrec t installation into the WLAN module socke t.
Reverse this procedure to insta ll the WLAN module. Component replacement procedures 37.
System board NOTE: The processor is included on the system board. The system board T hermal Material Kit, pa rt num ber 680571 -001, includes replace ment thermal paste and pads. Description Spare part number System board 704989-001 IMPORTANT: M ake special note of e ach screw and screw lock size and locatio n during removal and replacement.
2. Remove the power connecto r bracket Phillips screw (1) and remove th e power connector bracket (2) . 3. Remove the two Phillips screws (3) that secure the system board to the b ase enclosure. 4. Lift the left side of the system board (1) until it rests at an angle .
6. Disconnect the power connector cable (3) . 7. Remove the hard drive cable : a. Turn the system board u pside down, with the fron t toward you. b. Disconnect the hard drive ca ble from the system boa rd. Reverse this procedure to insta ll the system board.
Memory module WARNING! To reduce the risk of electric shock and damage to the e quipment, unplug the power cord and remove all batteries be fore installing a memory module.
3. Remove the memory module (2) by pulling it away from the slot a t an angle. CAUTION: T o prevent damage to the memory module, ho ld the memory module by the edges only. Do not to uch the compo nents on the me mory module. CAUTION: T o protect a memory module after removal, p lace it in an electrostatic-safe container.
2. Press down on the left a nd right sides of th e memory module (2) until the si de retentio n clips snap back into p lace. 3. Reverse the previo us steps to repl ace the following ite ms: ● System.

b. Thoroughly clean the therma l connections (1) on the syste m board and the hea t sink (2) before replacing a heat sink onto a system board. 3. Reverse this pr ocedure to replac e the heat sink. Replace the thermal material that ships wi th the replacement heat sink.
2. Remove the three Phillips screws (1) from the fan (2) and lift up to re move the fan. Reverse this procedu re to install the coolin g fan in the base enclos ure. 2. Lift both pieces of the spe aker assembly (2) . Reverse this proced ure to install the spea ker assembly on the base enclosure. Remove the display assembly: CAUTION: Support th e display assembly when removing the following screws. Failure to sup port the display assembl y can result in damage to the display assembly an d other computer components. 1. Remove the four Phillips screw s from the display hinges (1) and lift the display assembly (2) .
3. Remove the two top screw s (1) and two bott om screws (2) from the d isplay bracket and lif t the display brackets (3) to remove them. 4. If it is necessary to replace the display panel cable : a. Gently remove the cable from the routing clips (1) .
c. Remove the wireless ante nna cables and transceive rs (2) . Reverse this procedure to rea ssemble an d install the displa y assembly.
