2 External component identification Finding your hardware an d software information Locating hardware To find out what hardware is installed on your computer: 1. From the Start screen, type control panel , and then select Control Panel . 2. Select System and Security , and then in the System area, click Device Manager in the left column.

4 Removal and replacement procedures preliminary requirements Tools required You will need the following tools to comple te the removal and re placement procedures: ● Flat-bladed screw driver ● Ma.
Cables and connectors CAUTION: When servicing the computer, be sure tha t c ables are placed in their proper lo cations during the reassembly proc ess. Improper cable placemen t can damage the compu ter. Cables must be handle d with extreme care to avoid d amage.
CAUTION: To prevent damage to the computer when you are removi ng or insta lling internal components, observe these precau tions: Keep components in thei r electrostatic-safe c ontainers until you are ready to insta ll them. Before touch ing an electronic co mponent, disc harge static electricity by using the guidel ines described in this section.
Packaging and transportin g guidelines Follow these groun ding guidelines when p ackaging and transporti ng equipment: ● To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe tubes, bags, or boxes. ● Protect ESD-sensitive parts an d assemblies wi th conductive or approv ed containe rs or packaging.
Equipment guidelines Grounding equi pment must include eith er a wrist strap o r a foot strap at a ground ed workstation. ● When seated, wear a wrist strap connected to a grounded system. Wrist straps are flexible straps with a minimu m of one megohm ±10% resi stance in the ground cords.
5 Removal and replacement procedures for Customer Self-Repair parts NOTE: The Customer Self-Repair progra m is not available in all lo cations. Installing a part not supported by the Customer Self-Rep air program may void you r warranty. Check yo ur warranty to determine if Customer Self-Repair is supported in you r location.

7. Remove the optical drive (3) . Reverse this procedure to in stall the optical d rive. Hard d rive NOTE: The hard drive spare part kit does not include the hard drive bracket, hard drive connector cable, and screws. These components are included in the Hard Drive Hardware Kit, spare part number 716179-001.
Remove the hard drive: 1. Remove the two Phillips PM2.5×5.75 screws (1) th at secure the hard drive to th e computer. 2. Disconnec t the hard drive co nnector cable (2) from the system board. 3. Lift up on the h ard drive tab (1) to release the hard drive from the hard d rive bay.
Reverse this procedure to install the hard drive. Component replacemen t procedures 51.

3. Remove the WLAN module (3) by pulling the module away from the slot at an angle. NOTE: If the WLAN ante nna cables are not con nected to the terminals on the WLAN module, the protective sleeves must be insta lled on the antenna conne ctors, as shown in th e following illustration.

Remove the keyboard: 1. Remove the two Phillips PM2.5× 7.0 screws that secure the keyboard to the computer. 2. Partially open the computer. 3. Rest and secure th e computer on its left side. 4. Insert a thin tool in to the keyboard release hole , an d then press on the ba ck of the keyboard u ntil the keyboard disengage s from the computer.
7. Lift the rear edge of th e keyboard unti l it rests at an angle. 8. Swing the rear ed ge of the keyboard (1) up and forward until it rests upside down on the palm rest.

3. Remove the 15 Phillips PM2.5×7.0 screws that secure the top cover to the computer. 4. Remove the six Phillips PM2.0×3. 0 screws that secure the top cover to the computer. 5. Turn the comput er right side up with the front toward you. 6. Open the computer.
8. Release the ZIF conne ctor (2) to which the Touc hPad button board ribbo n cable is attached, and then disconnect the TouchPad button board ribbon cable from the system board. 9. Remove the three Phillips PM2.5×7.0 screws t hat secure the top co ver to the computer.

3. Release the wireless an tenna cables from th e clips built into the base enclosure (3) . 4. Remove the four Philli ps PM2.5×7.0 screws (1) that secure the display assembly to the base enclosure . 5. Remove the display assembly (2) from the computer.
Display assembly subcomponents NOTE: The display assembly subcom ponents are for the HP Pav ilion 17 Notebook non-touch screen models onl y. For removal procedures for an HP Pavilion 17 TouchSmart Notebook model display assembly; see Display assembly on page 65 .
3. Release the wireless an tenna cables from th e clips built into the base enclosure (3) . 4. Remove the four Philli ps PM2.5×7.0 screws (1) that secure the display assembly to the base enclosure . 5. Remove the display assembly (2) from the computer.
6. If it is necessary to replac e the display beze l or any of the display assembly subcomponents: a. Remove the two screw covers (1) and the two Phillips PM2.5×5.5 screws (2) that secure the display bezel to the display assembly. The screw covers ar e available in the R ubber Kit, spare part number 720677-001.
c. Remove the display bezel (4) . 7. If it is nece ssary to r eplac e the webca m/microphone module: CAUTION: Han dle the webcam/microphon e module with caution. Th is module has a thin profile and is su sceptible to damage wh en not handled care fully.
8. If it is necessary to replac e the display panel: a. Remove the six Phillips PM2.5×4.5 screws that secure the display pane l to the display enclosure. CAUTION: Before turning the display pa nel upside down, m ake sure the work surface is clear of tools, screws, and any other foreign objects.
9. If it is necessary to replac e the display hing es: a. Remove the four Phi llips PM2.0×3.0 screws (1) that secure the display hinges to the display panel. b. Remove the display hinge s (2) . 10. If it is necessary to replace the display panel cable : a.
11. If it is necessary to replace the wireless antenna: a. Detach the wireless antenna transceivers (1) from the displa y enclosure. (The wireless antenna transceivers are atta ched to the d isplay enclosure with dou ble-sided adhesive.

3. Detach the RTC ba ttery (2) from the system board. (The RTC ba ttery is attached to the ba se enclosure by double-sided tape.) 4. Remove the RTC battery.

2. Remove the heat sink (2) . NOTE: Due to the adhe sive quality of the th ermal material located b etween the heat sink and the system board co mponents, it may be necessary to move the heat sink from side to side to detach it . NOTE: Steps 3 and 4 apply to computer models equipped with a graphics subsystem wit h UMA memory.
4. Remove the heat sink (2) . NOTE: Due to the adhe sive quality of the th ermal material located b etween the heat sink a nd the system board co mponents, it may be nece ssary to mo ve the heat sink from side to side to detach it.

7 Using Setup Utility (BIOS) and HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) Setup Utility, or Basic In put/Output System (BIOS), controls co mmunication between all the input and output devices on the system (such as disk drives , display, keyboard, mous e, and printer).
Downloading a BIOS update CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the computer or an unsuccessful installation, download and install a BIOS update only when th e computer is connected to reliabl e external power using the AC adapter.
Using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) HP PC Hard ware Diagn ostics is a Un ified Exte nsible Firmwa re Interfac e (UEFI) that allows you to run diagnostic tests to dete rmine whether the comp uter hardware is functio ning properl y.

9 Backing up, restoring, and recovering Your computer includes tool s prov ided by HP and Windows to help you safeguard your information and retrieve it if you ever need to. These tools w ill help you return your comp uter to a proper working state or even back to the orig inal fa ctory state, all with simple st eps.
● To create recovery discs, your co mputer must have an optical dr ive with DVD writer capability, and you must use only high- quality blank DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL discs.
