Positioning the computer This computer m ay be shipped with no stand, with a height- adjustable stand, or a tilt/swivel stand. The computer may be placed in the landscap e position with the HP logo on the bottom bezel or it may be placed in the portrait position wit h the HP lo go on the right side, as you face the computer.
2 Activating and Customizing the Software NOTE: This chapter provides information for both Windows 7 and Windows 8 . Activating and customizing the software in Windows 7 If your computer was not shipped with a Wind ows® operating system, some portions of this documentation do not apply.
Downloading Windows 7 updates Microsoft may release upda tes to the operating s ystem. To help keep the compu ter running optimally, HP recommends checking for the latest updates du ring the initial installation and periodically throughout the life of the computer.
We recommend that you register yo ur comp uter with HP during operating system set up so you can receive important software updates, facilitate support questions, and si gn up for specia l offers. You can also register your computer with HP using the Register with HP app on the Start screen.

4 Routine care, SATA drive guidelines, and disassembly preparation This chapter provides general service information for the computer. A dherence to the procedur es and precautions d escribed i n this chapter is essential for proper servi ce.
Generating static The following table shows that: ● Different ac tivities gen erate diffe re nt amounts of static electricity. ● Static electricity increase s as humidity decreases.
Personal grounding methods and equipment Use the following equipment to prevent static electricity damage to equipment: ● Wrist straps are flexible straps with a maximum of one-megohm ± 10% resistance in the ground cords. To provide p roper ground, a stra p must be worn snug against bare s kin.
● Conductive foam ● Conductive tabletop workstation s with grou nd cord of one-megohm +/- 10% resistance ● Static-dissipative table or floo r mats with hard tie to ground ● Field service kits .
● Never cover the ventilation slots on th e monitor with any type of material. ● Install or enable power management functions of the operating system or other software, including sleep states . Routine care General cleaning safety precautions 1. Never use solvents or flammable solutions to c lean the computer.
CAUTION: Use safety glasse s equipped with side sh ields before attempting to cl ean debris from under the keys. ● Visible debris underneath or between the keys may be remo ved by vacuuming or shaking. ● Canned, pressurized air may be us ed to clea n debris from u nder the keys.
Tools and soft ware Requirements To service the compu ter, you need the follow ing: ● Torx T-15 screwdriver ● Torx T-15 screwdriver with small diameter shank (for certain fro nt bezel removal) ●.
● If you are inserting or removing a hard drive, tu rn off the computer. Do not remove a hard drive while the computer is on or in standby mode. ● Before handling a drive, ensure that you are discharged of static electricity. While handling a drive, avoid touching the connector.
SATA hard drive cables SATA data cable Always use an HP approved S ATA 3.0 Gb/s cable as it is fully backwards compatible with the SATA 1.5 Gb/s drive s. Current HP desktop prod ucts ship with SATA 3. 0 Gb/s hard drives. SATA data cabl es are suscep tible to damage if overflexe d.
5 Removal and Replacement Procedures All-in One (AIO) Chassis The following sections provide inform ation about di sassembling various components of the computer. Preparing to disassemble the computer To avoid injury and equipment damag e, always complete th e following steps in order, when opening the HP Pro All-in -One.
5. If the height adjustable/recline stand is installe d, before laying the co mputer down fo r service, position the c omputer ver tically by graspi ng the sides of the display, and then raise the display to the highest position. Place the computer face down on a so ft flat su rface.
Removing the rear I/O cover Description Spare p art number Rear I/ O cover 732492-001 1. If a cable lock is installed on the rear of the unit, remove the lock. 2. Grasp the rear I/O cover, then pull it down and off the comput er. NOTE: Removing the rear port cover may require that you use a significant amount of force.
3. Hold the cable management cover under the cables , align the cover hooks with the slots in the stand, and then insert the cover and slide it down. Installing an access panel security screw You may prevent access to internal components by securing th e access panel.
Access panel Description Spare p art number Upper rear access panel 698194-001 The computer has one main rear access panel that allows access to internal components. To remove the access panel: 1. Prepare the computer for disassembly (see Preparing to disassemble the computer on page 33 ).
3. To replace the access pa nel, hold the panel at a 90-degree angle, place the top into t he guides in the chassis, and the n press down to align it with the guides. NOTE: Align the bottom of the access panel with the notches on the outside edge of the computer (1) when installing.

3. Lift the stand up and off the computer. Tilt/swivel stand (optional) To remove the stand: 1. Prepare the computer for disassembly (see Preparing to disassemble the compu ter on page 33 ). 2. Push the release button (1) on th e bottom of the stand and pull the back o f the stand off (2) the computer.
3. Push the base of the stan d down (1), and loosen the ca ptive screws securing the stand to the unit (2). 4. Lift the stand up and off the computer. Stand 41.
Lower panel Description Spare p art number Lower rear access panel 732488-001 The lower panel is located under the stand and on the bottom part of the c omputer. To remove the access panel: 1. Prepare the computer for disassembly (see Preparing to disassemble the compu ter on page 33 ).
VESA mounting adapter The VESA mounting adapter is located under the stand. To remove the VESA mounting adapt er: 1. Prepare the computer for disassembly (see Preparing to disassemble the computer on page 33 ). 2. Remove the acce ss panel (see Access panel on page 37 ).
6. Slide the adapter t o the left (2) , and then lift it off the chassis (3) . To replace the VESA mounting adapte r, reverse the removal procedures. 44 Chapter 5 Removal and Replac ement Procedur es .
Drives Replacing the hard disc drive with a 3.5-inch hard disc drive or a single 2.5-inch drive Description Spare p art number Optical drives DVD±RW drive 657958-001 DVD-ROM drive 608394-001 Blu-ray .
If you choose to install an optional 2.5-inch so lid state drive (SSD) or self-encrypting drive (SED), you will need a drive adapter. The drive a dapter is not included in the 2.5-inch SSD spare parts kits. The first hard drive data cable connects to the SATA0 and SATA PWR0 system board connectors.
4. Lift the latch on one side of the hard disc drive cage and p ull the hard disc drive out of the cage. 5. Remove the four mounting screws from the hard disc drive. Be sure to keep the blue rubber grommets with each screw. In install the drive, reverse the remova l procedures .
The optical drive data cable connects to the SATA3 and SATA PWR3 system board connectors. NOTE: The drive bracket is not spared. When replac in g an optical drive, re move the br acket from the old drive and install it on the new drive. 1. Prepare the computer for disassembly (see Preparing to disassemble the compu ter on page 33 ).
4. Remove the two screws securing the op tical disc drive bracket to the drive. In install the drive, reverse the remova l procedures . NOTE: The optical disc drive can be installed in only one way.
Memory Description Spare p art number 8-GB 689374-001 4-GB 689373-001 2-GB 689372-001 Memory modules are located on the right side of th e computer (viewed fr om be hind). The computer has two memory slots that c an be populate d with up to two industry-standard SODIMMs.
The system will automatically operate in single channel mode, dual cha nne l mode, or flex mode, depending on how the SODIMMs are installed. Refe r to the following table to identify the SODIMM channel locations.
4. To remove a memory module, press outward on th e two latche s on each side of the SODIMM (1 ), then pull the SODIMM out of the socket (2). 5. To install a memory module , slide the SODIM M into the socke t at approximate ly a 30° angle (1 ), then pres s the SODIMM down (2) so th at the latches lock it in place.
Battery The RTC battery is located to the lower right of the fan. The battery is located in the memo ry compartment. The battery that comes with the computer provides power to the real-time clock. When replacing th e battery, use a battery equivalent to the battery originally installed in the computer.
NOTE: The lifetime of the lithium battery can be exte nded by plugging the computer into a live AC wall socket. T he lithium battery is only used when the compute r is NOT connected to AC power. HP encourages customers to recycle used electr onic hardware, HP or iginal print cartridges, and rechargeable batteries.
Serial port Description Spare p art number Serial port 698212-001 The serial port is located near the bottom of the co mputer below the hard drive. It is secured with one Phillips screw. To remove the serial port: 1. Prepare the computer for disassembly (see Preparing to disassemble the computer on page 33 ).
6. Remove the cable from its routing path (3) , and remove the serial port assembly from the computer. To install the serial port, re verse the removal procedures.
Webcam module Description Spare p art number Webcam module 732510-001 On products that ship with a webcam module, the mo dule is located at the top of the computer beneath the top panel. It is secured with two silv er Phillips screws and has one connector.
3. Remove the two Torx screws that secure the webcam modu le bracket to the computer. 4. Rotate the assembly to ga in access to the connector on the module, and then disconnect the cable from the module. 5. To remove the module from the br acket, remove the two Phillips screws that secure the module, and then separate the module from the bracket.
Converter board Description Spare p art number Converter board 732493-001 The converter board is located on the left side of the computer (v iewed from behind) under the main rear cover.
4. Remove the two bl ack Torx scre ws (2) that secure the board to the computer. Note the converter board jumper settings labele d on the chassis (3) . Be sure to correctly position the jumpers on the conver ter board fo r the installed display pan el.
Heat sink – Graphics board and processor Description Spare p art number Heat sink for use with graphics board 698214-001 Heat sink for use with processor 698201-001 Separate heat sinks cool the discre te graphic board (select mod els only ) and the processor.
4. Loosen the two silver captive Torx scr ews on the heat sink (2) , and then lift the heat sink out of the computer (3) . CAUTION: Remove heat sink retaining screws in diagon ally opposite pairs (as in an X) to even the downward for ces on the processor.
4. In the order indicated on the heat sink, lo osen the four silver captive Torx screws (1) – (4) , and then lift the heat sink o ut of the c ompute r (5) . CAUTION: Remove hea t sink reta ining sc rews in diagonally oppo site pairs (as in an X) to even the downward forces on the pro cessor.
Processor Description Spare p art number Intel Core i7-4770s (3.1-GHz, 8-MB L3 cache) 732507-001 Intel Core i5-4670s (3.1-GHz, 6-MB L3 cache) 732506-001 Intel Core i5-4570s (2.9-GHz, 6-MB L3 cache) 732505-001 1. Prepare the computer for disassembly (see Preparing to disassemble the compu ter on page 33 ).
To install a new processor: 1. Place the processor in its socket and close the retain er. Make sure the slot in the processor fits into the post on the socke t. 2. Secure the locking lever. If reusin g the existing heat sink, go to st ep 3. If using a new heat sink, go to step 6.
mSATA Solid-State Drive The mSATA SSD is located on the bottom of the syst em board. The drive is se cured wi th two P hillips screws. NOTE: In the following image, the mSATA SSD is not shown. To remove the mSATA SSD: 1. Prepare the computer for disassembly (see Preparing to disassemble the compu ter on page 33 ).
WLAN module Description Spare p art number HP WLAN 802.11 a/g/n, 2x2 701398-001 HP WLAN 802.11 a/b/g/n, 2x2 695915-001 The WLAN module is located on the left side of the system board. The mod ule is secured with one Phillips screw and has two connected antennas.
7. Remove the Phillips screw (2) that secures the modu le to the computer. 8. Lift the module to a 45-degree angle (1) , and then pull it away to remove it from the socket (2) . To install the WLAN module, re verse the removal procedures. NOTE: WLAN modules are designed with a no tch to prevent incorrect insertion.
Graphics board Description Spare p art number AMD Radeon HD 7650A 2- GB MXM discrete graphics board 708866-001 The graphics board is secured with two Torx screws . Removing it allows access to t he webcam and allows you to remove the main rear cover. To remove the graphics boar d: 1.
5. Rotate the board upward (2) , and then pull it up and away from the con nector to remo ve it from the comput er (3) . To replace the graphics board, re verse the removal procedur es.
Speakers Description Spare p art number Speakers 698197-001 On products that ship w ith speakers , the speakers are located at the bot tom of the computer. Two separate speakers a re each s ecured by two Torx screws. To remove the ri ght speaker you have to remove the power supply plug.
Fan Description Spare p art number Fan 698196-001 The fan is located near the middle of the computer and is secured with three Torx screws. You have to remove the VESA mounting ad apter to remove the fan.. To remove the fan assembly: 1. Prepare the computer for disassembly (see Preparing to disassemble the compu ter on page 33 ).
NOTE: To avoid damaging th e rubber screw gro mmets installed arou nd the captive screw s, when installing the fan, push down on the fan assembly before you ti ghten the screws. Make sur e the grommets are positioned correctly before tightening the screws.
7. Rotate the panel out and off of the computer (2) . NOTE: The removal and replacement procedu res are similar for bo th panels. To install the side panels, reverse the removal procedures.
Power supply Description Spare p art number Power supply, 180-W 732494-001 The power supply is located at the middle, bottom of the comput er. It is secured with two Torx screws. The power connecto r mounts separate ly with one Torx screw. The powe r supply slides out of the bottom of the bracket that secures it.
5. Remove the two Torx screws (1) that secure the power connector to the computer, and then lift the connector from atop the speaker (2) . 6. Disconnect the cable from the system board conne ctor (1) . 7. Position the cable above the power supply (2) .
8. Slide the power supply d ownward and out of the bracket that houses it. To install the power supply, re verse the removal proc edures. Power supply 77.
System board Description Spare p art number System board for use in models without Windows 8 700629-001 System board for use in models with Windows 8 St andard 700629-501 System board for use in models with Windows 8 Profes sional 700629-601 The system board is located on the right s ide of th e computer (viewed from the rear).
11. Remove the cable mounting brac ke t by removing the Torx screw (1) , and then sliding it up (2) and lifti ng it out of the computer. 12. Remove the two Torx scre ws that sec ure the outer side brac ket to the computer. The screws also secure the system board.
13. Rotate the side bracket up and off the computer. 14. Remove the eight remaining Torx screws that secure the sy stem board to the computer. 80 Chapter 5 Removal and Replac ement Procedur es All-in .
15. Slide the system board toward the top of the computer, and then lift the board up and out of the computer. To install the system boar d, reverse the removal pr ocedures.
When replaci ng the system board, be sure to ro ute the cables corr ectly. See the following images for cable routing. Route the following cables from under th e system board cable mounting bracket: .
Route the following cables from under the power supply: ● Power button board ● Hard drive data (SATA) ● Hard drive power ● Hood sensor Updating the display panel manufacturer setting in BIOS After replacing the system board, make sure the disp lay panel manufacturer setting is correct in BIOS.
Updating SMBIOS Information When replacing the system board, you m ust re program the SMBIOS information on the affected computer. Failure to reprogram the board will result in eventual failure, su ch as an activation failure (need to reactivate the system) or a system recovery failure.
Card reader board Description Spare p art number Card reader board 732504-001 The card reader board is located on the right side of the system board. It is secured with two screws. To remove the card reader board : 1. Prepare the computer for disassembly (see Preparing to disassemble the computer on page 33 ).
3. Remove the two Phillips screws (1) that secure the board to the system board. 4. Lift the board to a 45-d egree angle (1) , and then p ull it away to remove it from the socket (2) .
Power button board Description Spare p art number Power button board 732490-001 The power button bo ard is located on the bottom left corner of the computer. It is covered by a Mylar shield and has two c onnectors and one screw. To remove the power b utton board: 1.
8. Remove the Torx screw (1) that secures the Mylar that covers the power button boar d, and then lift the Mylar from the computer (2) . NOTE: On some models, the left screw that secure s the left speaker (whe n viewed from the re ar) may also secure the Mylar.
Front bezel Description Spare p art number Front bezel 732487-001 The front bezel is located on the front of the comput er and is secured to the main system bracket wit h eight Torx screws. Replacement bezels include t he webcam shutter and capacitive sensor board.
11. Remove the bracket by removing the Torx screw and then lifting the bracket off the comp uter. 12. Remove the Torx screws that secure the bezel to the main system bracket assembly, as follows: ● .
13. Lift the bracket from the bezel. To install the front bezel, reverse the removal procedures. Front bezel 91.
Antenna Description Spare p art number Antenna kit 698218-001 The antenna route from the WLAN card to the top of the computer. To remove the antenna: 1. Prepare the computer for disassembly (see Preparing to disassemble the compu ter on page 33 ). 2. Remove the acce ss panel (see Access panel on page 37 ).
12. Remove the two Torx sc rews that secure each antenna to the frame. Antenna 93.
13. Note the routing path for each antenna for replacement. To install the antenna, reve rse the removal procedures. Display panel Description Spare p art number Display panel 732495-001 Display panels require a b acklight cable specific to the manufacturer .
9. Remove the side panels (s ee Si de panels on page 73 ). 10. Remove the front bezel (see Front bezel on page 89 ). 11. Disconnect the backlight c able from the displa y panel. NOTE: Replace the backlight cab le with the new ba cklight cable that comes with the new display panel kit.
14. Disconnect the display cable from the display panel by pressing in on the tabs (1) on the side of the connector, and pulling th e cable from the connector (2) .
Hard drive and optical drive cables and connectors Description Spare p art number Optical drive cable (data and power assembly) 698221-001 Hard drive cable (data and power assembly) 698215-001 The hard drive and optical drive c onnectors are lo cated near the middle of the computer, partially under the main display bracket.
11. Remove two To rx screws that s ecure the har d driv e co nnector or the optical drive connector to the computer. 12. Remove the cables from the meta l clips built into the computer. 13. Disconnect the hard drive cables or the op tical drive cabl es from the system board.
6 Computer Setup (F10) Utility Computer Setup (F10) Utilities Use Computer Setup (F10) Ut ility to do the following: ● Change factory default settings.
● Enable or disable removable media b oot ability. ● Solve system configuration errors detected but not automatically fixed duri ng the Power-On Self- Test (POST). ● Replicate the system setup by saving sy stem configuration informatio n on a USB device and restoring it on one or more computers.

7 HP PC Hardware Diagnostics To help troubleshoot and diagnose failures, use th e UEFI-based hardwa re diagnostic sol ution that HP includes on all products.
After pressing F2 , the BIOS sequentiall y searches three places for the system diagnostics : a. First – a connected USB drive (to download the diagnostics t ools to a USB drive, see the instructions in Downloading HP PC Hard ware Diagnostics to a USB device on page 116 ).
8 Troubleshooting without diagnostics This chapter provides information on how to identi fy and correct mino r proble ms, such as USB devices, hard drive, optical drive, graphi cs, audio, me mory, and softwa re pr oblems. If you encounter problems with the computer, refer to the tables in this ch apter for probable causes and recommended solutions.
● If you recently installed new so ftware, uninstall the software and see if the computer functions properly. ● Boot the computer to the Safe Mode to see if it wil l boot without all of the drivers l oaded. When booting the operating system, use “Last Known Configuration.
● Check the Power LED on the front of the computer to se e if it is flashing red. The flashing lights are error codes that will help you diagnose the problem. Refer to Appendix A, POST error mess ages on page 170 for more information. ● Turn up the brightness and contrast contro ls of the monitor if the monitor is dim.
Solving general problems You may be able to easily resolve the general problems described in this section. If a problem persists and you are unable to resolve it yourself or if yo u feel uncomfortable abo ut performing the operation, contact an authorized dealer or reseller.
Cursor will not move usin g the arrow keys on the keypad. Cause Solution The Num Lock key is turned on. Press the Num Lock key. If attempting to boot from a hard drive, ensure it is attach ed to the system board dark blue SATA connector. Bootable hard drive is not listed first in the Boot Order.
Solving media card reader problems Media card will not work in a digita l camera after formatting it in Windows. Cause Solution By default, Windows will format any media card with a capacity greater than 32MB with the FAT32 format. Some digital cameras use the FAT (F AT16 & FAT12) form at and can not operate with a FAT32 formatted card.
Do not know how to remove a media card correctly. Cause Solution The computer’s software is us ed to safely eject the card. In Windows 7, click Sta rt , select Computer , right-click on the corresponding drive icon, and th en select Eject . Pull the card out of the slot.
Blank screen (no video). Cause Solution You may ha ve a screen blan king utility installed or energy saver features are enabled. Press any key or click the mouse button and type your password (if set). System ROM is corrupted; system is ru nning in Boot Block Emergency Recovery M ode (indicated by eight beeps).

Fuzzy focus; streak ing, ghosting, or shadowing effect s; horizontal scrolling lines; fai nt vertical bars; or unable to center the pict ure on the screen (fl at pa nel monitors using an analog VGA input connection only).
Solving audio problems If the computer has au dio features and you encounter au dio problems, s ee the common c auses and solutions listed in the following table. Sound cuts in and out. Cause Solution Processor resourc es are being used by other open applications.

Network controlle r stops working without apparent c ause. Cause Solution The files containing the net work drivers are corrupted. Rein stall the network drivers using the Recovery Disc Set in Windows 7 or Windows recovery tools in Windows 8. If necessary, download the softpaq from the web (from a different computer).
NOTE: The memory count will be affected by co nfigurations with the Management Engine (ME) enabled. The ME uses 8MB of system memory in si ngle cha nnel mo de or 16 MB of memory in dual- channel mode to download, decomp ress, and execute the ME firmware for Out- of-Band (OOB), third- party data storage, a nd ot her management functions.

Solving front panel component problems If you encounter problems with de vices connected to the fro nt panel, refer to the common causes and solutions listed in the following table. A USB device, headphone, or microphone is not recognized by the computer.
Unable to connect to the Internet. Cause Solution The CAT5 UTP cable is disconnected. Connect the CAT5 UTP cable between the cable mo dem and the computers’s RJ-45 connector. ( If the connection is good, the “PC” LED light on the front of th e cable/DSL modem will be on.
Solving software problems Most software problems occur as a result of the following: ● The application was not instal led or configured correctly. ● There is insufficient me mory av ailable to run the application. ● There is a conflict between app lications.

11 Password security and resetting CMOS This computer supports se curity password feature s, which can be established through the Computer Setup Utilities menu. Establishing a setup or power-on password To establish the power-on or setup password features, complete the following steps: 1. Turn on or restart the computer. 2.
