Load media This section provides instructions for loading media into the device . To load Tray 1 (main tray) 1. Lift the outp ut tray. 2. Insert the media print-side dow n along the righ t of the tray. Make sure the stack of media aligns wi th the right and back ed ge s of the tray, and does not e xce ed the line marking in the tray.

Change setting s (Mac OS X) To change the settings 1. On the File menu, click Page Setup . 2. Change the settin gs that you want (such as paper si ze), and then click OK . 3. On the File menu, click Print to open the print driver. 4. Change the settings that you want (such as media type), an d then click OK or Print .
To print automatically on both si de s of a p age (Windows) 1. Load the appropriate media. For more information, see Guidelines for printing on both sides of a page and Load m edia . 2. Make sure the duplexe r is properly installed. Fo r mo re i nf ormation, see Install the duplexer .
TIP: To print Web pages correctly, you might need to set your print orient ation to Landscape . Cancel a print job You can cancel a print jo b using one of the fo llo wing methods. Device control p ane l: Press ( Cancel button). This clears th e job that the device is currently proce ssing.
4 Scan You can scan originals a nd se nd them to a varie ty of destinations, such as a fo ld er on the network or on a specific computer. Yo u can use the device control panel, t he HP software, and T WAIN-comp li ant or WIA-compliant programs o n a com puter.
Scan an original to a computer You can send a scan to a comput e r conn ecte d di rectl y to t he device or a computer on the network. You can also send a scan to a program in stalled on a compute r . To send a scan to a computer from the HP Solution Center 1.
Scan from a TWAIN-compliant or a WIA-compliant program The device is TWAIN-compl aint and WIA-compliant a nd works with programs t hat support TWAIN-compliant and WIA-com pliant scanning devices.
For more informatio n, see the onscreen help t hat came with the scanni ng sof tware. Edit a scanned documen t using optical character reco gnition (OCR) software You can use OCR software to imp ort scan ne d te xt in to your preferred word-processi ng program for editing.
5 Work with memory devices The device comes with a memory card reader that can read several types of digital camera memory cards. You ca n print an index sheet, w hich shows thumbnail vie ws of photos that are stored on a memory card.

To print camera-selected phot os using the DPOF stan dard 1. Insert your memory card int o the appropriate slot on the device. 2. When prompted, do one of the followi ng: •P r e s s OK to print all DP OF-tagged photos. The device p rint s all DPOF-tagge d photos.
To print an index sheet 1. Insert a memory card into the appropriate sl ot on the device. 2. Press the Photo button. 3. Press the right arrow key repeatedly to select Index Sheet . 4. Press OK . Save photos to your computer After you take photos wit h you r digit al ca mera , you can print them immed iat el y o r sa ve them to your com puter.
To turn on Red Eye Removal 1. Insert your memory card int o the appropriate slot on the device. 2. When prompted, press the Photo butt on repeatedly until t he Red Eye Remov al is displayed .
6F a x You can use the device to send and receiv e faxes, including color faxes. You can schedule faxes to be sent a t a later time and set up speed-dials to se nd faxes quickly and easily to frequently used numbers.

3. When you hear th e d ial tone, enter the nu mber by using the keyp ad on the device control p anel. 4. Follow any prompts that might occur. TIP: If you are using a calling card to se nd a fax and y.
To schedule a fax from the d evi ce control panel 1. Load your origina ls. For additio nal information, see Load ori ginals . 2. In the Fax area, press Fa x repeatedly unt il How to Fax appear s. 3. Press until Send Fax Later appears, and then press OK .
Send a fax to multiple recipients from the device contro l panel You can send a fax to mult iple recipients at o nce by grouping individu al speed dial ent ries into group spe ed dial entries. To send a fax to multiple recipien ts using group speed dial 1.
HP recommends that you use on ly color originals for color faxi ng. To send a color origina l fax from the dev ice control panel 1. Load your origina ls. For additio nal information, see Load ori ginals . 2. In the Fax area, press Fa x . The Enter Number prompt appears.
The following re solution settin gs are available for sending faxe s: Fine , Very Fine , Photo , and Standard . The def ault setting is Fine . • Fine : provides high-quality text suitable for fa xing most documents. This is the default setting. When sendi ng f axes in color, the device always u ses t he Fine sett in g.
3. Enter the fax number by using the keypad, press Speed Dial or a one-touch speed dial button (some models only) to select a speed dial, or press Redial/Pau se to redial the last number dialed. 4. In the Fax area, press Fa x repeatedly unt il Lighter / Da rker appears.
If you receive a legal-size fax and the device is not currently se t to use l egal-size pap er, the device reduces the f ax so that it fits on th e paper th at is loaded . If you have disabled the Automatic Reduction feat ure, the device prints th e f ax on two pages.
5. When you hear fax tones from a sending fax machine, do the following: a . Press START FAX Black or START FAX Color on the devi ce contr ol panel. b . When prompted, select Fax Receive . NOTE: Depending on your cou ntry/region, t he device might recei ve the fax automatically whe n you hea r fax to ne s f rom the sending fax ma chine.
3. Press the right arrow button to select On , On Error Only , or Off . 4. Press OK . Reprint received faxes from memory If you set the Backup Fax R ece ption mode to On , the received f axes are st ored in memory, whether the device has an error condition or not.

Forward fa xes to another number You can set up the device to forward your faxes to another fax number.
To set the paper size for received f axes from the de vic e c ontr ol p anel 1. Press Setup . 2. Select Basic Fax Setup and t hen select Fax Paper Size .
Set the junk fax mode By default, Bloc k Ju nk F ax mode is turned On . If you do not subscribe to a caller ID service through your phone pro vide r, or do not want to use this feature, you can turn of f this setting. To set the junk fax mode Ÿ Press the Junk Fax Blocker button, select the Block Junk Fax option, and then select On or Off .
Remove numbers from th e junk fax list If you no longer want to block a fax number, you can remove a nu mbe r fr om yo ur ju nk fax list. To remove numbers from the li st of junk fax numbers 1. Press Setup . 2. Press Basic Fax Setup , and then press Junk Fax B locker Setup .
NOTE: Fax to PC and Fax to Mac are availab le for receivin g black-and-white faxes only. Color faxes are prin te d instead of being sa ved t o the computer.
Modify Fax to PC or Fax to Ma c se tting s You can update th e Fax to PC setting s from your computer at any ti me from the Fax settings page in th e Solution Center. Yo u can turn off Fax to PC and disable printing faxes from the device control panel.

To set the answer mode to ma nua l or automatic via th e embedded Web server 1. Open the embedded Web server, click the Settings tab, and then click Ba sic Fax Setup in the left pane. 2. Select On or Off in the Auto Answer drop-down menu in the Other Basic Fax Settings section.
If you do not have a d isti ncti ve ring service, use the de fau lt ring pattern, whi ch is All Rings . NOTE: The HP fax cannot receive faxes whe n the main phone number is off the hook. To change th e ans wer ri ng patte rn f or di stin ctiv e ri ng vi a the devi ce c ontrol pane l 1.
To set the dial type via the device control panel Ÿ Press Setup , press Basic Fax Setup , and then use the Tone or Pulse Dialing option. To set the di al type vi a the embedded Web server 1. Click the Settings tab, and t hen click Basic Fax Setup in the left pane.

Test fax setup You can test your fax setup to check the status of the devi c e an d to make sure it is set up properly for faxing. Perform this test a fte r you have completed set ting up t he device for faxing.
By default, the device is set t o print a report on ly if there is a proble m sending or receiving a fax. A confirmation message that indicates whether a fax was successfully sent appears briefly on the control-panel di splay after each transaction.
To enable fax confi rmati on v ia the embedded Web serve r 1. Click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced Fax Setup in the left pane. 2. Make a selection in the Fax Confirmation drop-down menu.

Print a Caller ID History Report Use the following proced ure to p ri nt a li st of Caller ID fax numbers. To print a Caller ID History Report 1. Press Setup , select Printer Report , and then select Caller ID Hi story Report . 2. Press OK . Cancel a fax You can cancel a fax you are sending or re ceiv ing at any time.
7 Copy You can produce high-quality color and grayscale copies on a variety of paper types and sizes. NOTE: To make a c opy using an HP Office jet 6500 (E709d) or HP Officejet 6500 (E709r), the HP All-in-One must be connected t o a computer, t he computer must be turned on and you mu st be lo gged on.
To make a copy 1. Make sure you have pa per l oaded in the input tray. 2. Place your original face do wn on the scanner gla ss or load originals in the ADF. For more informat ion, see Load original s . 3. Do one of the foll owin g: • Press START COPY Black or START PC COPY Black to start a black-and-white copy job.
Set the copy paper size You can set the paper size on the device. The paper size you select shou ld matc h what is loaded in your input tray. NOTE: If you are using an HP Of ficejet 6500 (E709d) o r HP Officejet 6500 (E709r), this setting is no t available.
NOTE: If you are using an HP Office jet 6500 (E709 d) or HP Off icejet 6500 (E7 09r), this setting is not availa ble. To determine the mo del you have, see Finding t he device model number . To change the copy qua lity from the device control panel 1.
4. Press until Full Page 91% appears, and t hen press OK . 5. Press START COPY Black or START PC C OPY Black , or START COPY Color or START PC COPY Color . Copy a legal-size document onto letter paper You can use the Legal > Ltr 72% setting to reduce a copy of a legal-size docu ment to a size that fi ts onto letter paper.
4. Do one of the foll owin g: • Press to darken t he copy. • Press to lighten the copy. 5. Press START COPY Black or START COPY Color . Enhance light areas of your copy You can use Ph oto enhancements to e nha nce light colors that mig ht otherwise appear white.
To collate copies fr om the control panel 1. Load originals in the ADF. For more informati on , see Loa d original s . 2. Press Copy repeatedly until Co llate appears.

To set up the device with a separate fax line 1. Using the phone cord sup plied in t he box wit h the device, connect one end to your telephone wall jack, th en connect the other end to the port labeled 1-LINE on t he back of the device. NOTE: You might need to conn ect t he supplied phone cord to the adapter provided for your country/region.
To set up the device w ith DSL 1. Obtain a DSL filte r from your DSL provider. 2. Using the phone cord suppl ie d in the box with the d evice , connect one end to th e open port on the DSL filter, and then connect the other e nd to the port labe led 1-LINE on the back of the device.
• If you are using a PBX phone system, dial the number for an outside line before dialing the fax number. • Make sure you use the supplied cord to co nnect fr om the telephone wall jack to the device. If you do not, you might not be ab le to fax successfully.

NOTE: If you have a comp uter dial-up modem, yo ur computer dial-up m odem shares the phone line with the de vice. You will not be able to use both you r mod em and th e device simultaneo usly. For example, you can not use the device for faxi ng while you are using your computer dial-up modem to send an e-mail or access the Internet.
4. If your mo dem software i s set to recei ve faxes to yo ur compute r automatical ly, turn off that setting. NOTE: If you do not turn off the aut oma tic f ax reception setting in your modem software, the device will not be able to receive faxes. 5.

Uninstall and reinstall the software If your installatio n is incomplete, or if you conn ected the USB cable to the computer before prompted by the software install ati on screen, you might need to uninstall and th en reinstall the softw are. Do not simply dele te t he device applicat ion f iles from your computer.
4. Restart your computer. NOTE: It is import ant that yo u disconn ec t the device before restarting your computer. Do not connect the device to your computer until after you have reinstalled the software. 5. Insert the device Starter CD into your comp uter's CD-ROM drive and then start the Setup program.

3. Press the tab on the front of t he ink cartridg e to release it, and then remove it fr om the slot. 4. Remove the new ink cartridg e from its packaging by pulling the orange pull-tab straight back to remove the plastic wrap from the ink cartridge.
5. Twist the orange cap to sna p it off. 6. Using the colored sh ap ed i cons for help, slide t he i nk cartridge into the e m pt y slot until it clicks into place and is seated firmly in the slot. CAUTION: Do not lift the latch hand le on the print carriage t o install the ink cartridges.
Clean the sensor NOTE: This procedure is only necessary wh en you see an error message relating to the ink cartridges. For more in fo rmation about error messages, see Errors . Clean the sensor. If the problem is not resolved, printing can continue, but the ink system behavior might change.
4. Locate the sensor inside the product. The sensor is a square, black plastic part slig htly larger than a p encil eraser, just to the left of the print carriage. 5. Wipe the sensor with a dry swab or lint-free cloth. 6. Close the ink cartridge access door, and check if the error message ha s be en resolved.
The print carriage moves to the center of the product. NOTE: Wait until the p r in t carriage stops movi ng before proceed in g. 4. Remove all of the in k cartridges and place the m on a piece of pape r wi th t he ink openings point in g up. To remove the in k ca rtridges a .
6. Install each ink cartridge in its slot. Pre ss it down until the tab snaps into place. Match the color and ic on on each ink cartridge label to the color and icon on the slot for that ink cartridge. 7. Close the ink cartri dge access doo r, an d check if the error has bee n resolved.

Check the me dia settings • Make sure you select the correct print quality settings in the printe r driver for the media loaded in the trays. • Make sure the page settings in the printer driver mat ch the page size of medi a loaded in the tr ay.
Check the media size • Content on a pag e might be cut off if the d ocument size is larg er than th e medi a that you are usin g. • Make sure the media size selected in the pr inter driver match the size of media loaded in the tray.

Solution 3: Load the st ack of pape r correctly Solution: Remove t he stack of paper from the i n put tray, reload the paper, and then slide the paper wid th guide inward until it st ops a t th e edge of the paper. Solution 2: Check the layout of the document Solution: Make sure the layout of the document you ar e trying to print f its on a paper size supported by the product. To preview the print layout 1. When you are read y to print, remove only t he paper you plan to use imm ediately.

Solution 5: Contact HP s upp ort Solution: Contact HP support for service. Go to: www.hp.com/ support . If prompted, ch oose your country/reg ion , a nd then click Co ntact HP for information on calling for techni cal support. Cause: There was a prob lem with the print hea d.
Solution 3: Print the image in a smaller size Solution: Reduce the si ze of the image and then prin t it. If you are printin g a photo or graphic, an d the print size is set too high, it will be blurry or fuzzy when printed. If a digital photo or raster ized graphic has been resized, it can be blurry or fuzzy when printed.
Solutio n 1: M ak e sure the paper i s l oaded correctl y Solution: Make sure tha t th e pa per is loaded cor r ectly in the input t ray . For more information, see: Load medi a Cause: The paper was not loaded correct ly. If this di d not solve the issue, try the next solution.
Solution 2: Wait while t he ink dries Solution: Wait at least thirty minutes for the in k inside the product to dry, t hen try the print j ob again. Cause: The excess ink in the pro duct needed to dry out. Paper is not picked up from the input tray Try the following solutions to resolve the issue.
Solution 4: Clea n the r ollers Solution: Clean the rollers. Make sure you have the f o llowing materi als available: • A lint-free cloth, or any soft material that will not come apart or leave fibers. • Distilled, filte red, or bottled wa ter (tap water m ight conta in contamin ants that can damage the ink cartridges).
Cause: Many black print quality problems clear up with the automatic services performed after each print job is finished. Solution 2: Use TrueType or OpenType fo nts Solution: Use TrueType o r Ope nType fonts to ensure that the prod uct is able t o print smooth f on ts.

Take steps to impr ove the s can quality ƕ Use the gla ss to scan rather than the ADF. ƕ Use high-quality originals. ƕ Place the media correctl y . I f the media is placed incorrectly on the scan ne r gl ass, it might skew, which causes unclear im ages.
Try these first if you are having problems with your fax f eat ures: • Check the telep hon e cord. Try using another tel ephone cord to see if the problem continues. • Remove other equ ipmen t from the HP d evice. Conn ect the HP de vice directly to the wall jack to see if the proble m pe rsi sts.
• Make sure you use the phone cord that came with the device. If you do no t use the supplied ph one co rd to connect from the t elephone wall jack to the device, you might not be able to send or receive faxes. After you plug in the phone cord that came with the device, run the fax test again.
The "Phone Cord Connected to Correct Port on Fax" test failed Solution: Plug the pho ne cord into the corre ct port. 1. ƕ Disconnect the answering ma chine and then try receiving a f ax. I f f axing is successful without th e a nsweri ng mach ine, the answerin g machine might be causing the problem . ƕ Reconnect the answeri ng machine and record your outgoing message again.

Check the device to ensu re the follow ing • Power light is on and not blinking. When the device is first turned on, it takes approximately 45 seconds to wa rm up. • The device is in th e Ready state, an d no other lights on th e device control panel are lit or blinking.
Clear jams Occasionally, media be co mes j ammed during a job. Try the follow ing remedies before you attempt to clear the jam. • Make sure that you are printing with media t hat meets specification s. Fo r more information, see Select print media .
b . Locate any jam med med ia inside the device, gras p it with both hands and then pull it towards you. c . If the jam is n ot there, push the latch on the top o f the duplexer and l ower its cover. If the jam is insid e, ca re fu ll y remove it. Close the co ver.
