Icon Button name Description 1 Copy By default, print the number of copies currently configured in HP Document Copy. Alternatively, start the scanni ng software that is assigned to this button. 2 Scan By default, start a scan that uses the HP Smart Document Scan Software profile that is assigned to this button.
Load original documents You can scan up to 20 0 single- and doubl e-sided document pages from the autom atic document feeder (ADF), and you can scan one side of a docum ent directly from the scanner glass.
• For small or narrow d ocuments, load t he edge that is less th an 148 mm (5.8 in) point ing into the f eeder so that the long er edge can be pulled into the feed er and passed along by t he feed rollers. • When loadi ng small or lightw eight documents, su ch as A6 cards (index cards) or U.
2. Fan the stack of docume nt pages to ensure that t he pages do not stick together. Fan the edg e that will be pointing into th e ADF in one directi on, and then f an that same edg e in the opposite d irection. 3. Align the edges of the docu ments by tapping the bottom of the stack agains t the table top.

How to scan The basic steps for scanning are: 1. Load the ori ginals. 2. Do one of t he following: • Press the Scan ( ) button on the scann er front panel to sta rt scanning with th e assigned software (and profil e, if appr opriate) . • On the comput er, open the scanning soft ware, and then select the ISIS or TWAIN data sou rce.
Scan from HP Smart Do cument Scan Software 1. Click Start , point to Programs or All Progr ams , point to HP , point to HP Smart Document Sc an , and then click HP Smart Docum ent Scan Software . 2. Select a profile, and then click Scan . TIP: A description of the select ed profile is disp layed below the list.
2 Useful scanner features Experienced docume nt management pro fessionals might be interested in the f ollowing scan fea tures that are available in the HP Smart Document Scan Softw are. Many of these features are also availabl e from any ISIS- or TWAIN-comp liant documen t scanning softw are that allows you to modify the scan settings.
Automatically rotate scanned pages By default, pages fe d through the a utomatic document feeder (ADF) appear in the scan output i n the same orientation as th e pages in the AD F input tray. Th e scanner can rotate t he scan data to pro duce a different orientation in the scan output.
Set the background color for scans from the automatic document feed er When you scan from the a utomatic document feeder (AD F), you can choose a white o r black background for the scan.
Scan without reviewing The standard process f or using the HP Smart Do cument Scan Softw are to complete your sca ns is as follows: 1. Scan document pag es. 2. Review the scanned document pa ges in the HP Smart Document Scan So ftware Scan Progress Window .
3. Raise the cart ridge stall la tch. 4. If you are replacin g an empty print cart ridge, slide it to the righ t to remove it from the cartridge st all. 5. Remove the prin t cartridge from its packaging. Pull the t ab to remove the p rotective ta pe from the nozzles.
8. Grasp the center of t he ADF input tray , and then lowe r the ADF input t ray into position fo r scanning. 9. Update the im printer history: a . Press the Tools ( ) button on the scanner fron t panel to open th e HP Scanner Too ls Utility. Click the Imprinter tab.

3. Clean the clea r scanning strip on t he scanner bed. Wipe t he clear area with a clean, damp, lint -free cloth. 4. Close the scanner lid . 5. Lift the latch on top of the ADF to open the top and side ADF access doors.
6. Locate the white st rip on the side ADF access door and the cl ear scan window in side the ADF. Wi pe both of these areas clea n with a clean, da mp, lint-free cloth .
8. Wait several minutes fo r the rollers to dry, and t hen close the ADF access doors. 9. Reconnect t he USB cable and pow er cable to the scanner, and then press the Power switch to the on position.
NOTE: If the filter is damage d, replace it w ith a new filte r. To order a replacem ent part, go to www.hp.com/support 4. Inspect the filter cover. If it is dirty, use a clean, damp, l int-free cloth to rem ove the dirt. 5. Ensure that the f ilter and the f ilter cover ar e completely dry.

Installation troubleshooting If the scanner does no t work after installati on or if the scanne r has stopped working co rrectly, you m ight see a message on the com puter screen that i s similar to one of the follow ing: • The scanner cou ld not be initia lized.
3. Restart the c omputer. 4. After the comput er has restarte d, try using th e scanner. If the scanner works and you change d the way it wa s connected to the computer in step 1 , the communication probl em might involve the U SB hub, the docking st ation, a USB port, or anot her USB device.
If the scanner lamp rema ins on after a lo ng period of inacti vity, turn off th e scanner, wait 30 secon ds, and then turn the scanner back on. NOTE: The scanner lamp doe s not turn off when paper is in the auto matic document f eeder input tray.
3. On the Scan tab of the Profile Settings dialog box, click Advanced Settings . 4. On the More tab of t he Propertie s dialog box, select the Enab le check box. Optimizing scanning and task speeds Several settings i nfluence the tot al time for a scanni ng job.

4. Remove any jammed page s from inside the ADF. 5. Remove any jammed pages fro m the ADF output tra y. 6. If the jamm ed page still canno t be removed, fol low these step s: a . Open the scanner lid . b . Push the green tab t oward the scanner lid to open the inner ADF a ccess door.
7. Close the inne r ADF access door, and then close the scanne r lid. 8. At the scan desti nation, exami ne the scan output to determine which p age was the last to be completely scanned.
