Basics 31 Checking notifications Notification icons on the s tatus bar report the arriv al of ne w messages, calendar e v ents, alarms set and ongoing settings such as when call forw arding is on or the curr ent call status.
32 Basics A djus ting the v olume Adjus ting the ringer v olume changes the volume le v el of the phone ring tone , whereas adjusting the media v olume changes the v olume lev el of sound notifications, music or video playback. T he ringer v olume and media v olume can be separat ely adjust ed.

Phone calls Making calls Ther e ar e sev eral con v enient methods to mak e a call from y our phone. Most SIM car ds are pr eset with a PIN (personal identification number) that is pr o vided by y our mobile opera tor . When prompted, ent er the preset PIN, then tap Ent er .
44 Phone calls Calling a speed dial number Pres s HOME, and then tap Phone . On the phone k eypad, pr ess and hold the number that is as sociated with the c ontact you want t o call. The number 1 on the phone k e ypad is generally r eserv ed for y our v oicemail.
Phone calls 45 Making an emer gency call Y ou can mak e emergency calls fr om y our phone e ven if y ou don’t hav e a SIM card ins talled or y our SIM card has been block ed. Pres s HOME, and then tap Phone . Dial the international emer gency number for y our locale (for ex ample, 000), and then tap Call .
46 Phone calls Rec eiving calls When y ou r eceiv e a phone call fr om a contact, the Incoming call scr een appears and displa ys the caller ID icon, name , and phone number of the calling party .
Phone calls 4 7 Rejecting an inc oming call Depending if the display is on or off , you need t o:: If the display is on, tap Decline t o reject and send the call t o y our v oice mail. If the display is off , the display will turn on sho wing the Lock scr een.
48 Phone calls Using in-call options When a call is in pr ogres s, use the buttons onscr een to mut e or unmute the micr ophone or to turn on or off the speak erphone. Y ou can also pres s MENU to open the call options t o let you add a call, place the call on hold, mut e the microphone , and more .
Phone calls 49 Setting up a conf erenc e call Mak e a call to the first c onfer ence call participant. When connect ed, pr ess MENU, tap A dd call , and then dial the number of the second participant. The firs t participant is put on hold when you dial the sec ond participant.
50 Phone calls Using call hist ory When y ou miss a call, the missed call ic on ( ) appears in the title bar . Use the Call history tab in the People application t o check who the caller was or vie w all y our dialed numbers and rec eiv ed calls. Pres s HOME, and then tap Phone .
Phone calls 51 Checking a missed call Y ou will see the missed call ic on in the status bar when y ou miss a call. Pres s HOME, and then tap Phone . T ap at the bottom-right c orner of the screen. In the call hist ory list, missed calls ar e indicated b y the missed call ic on ( ).
52 Phone calls Call servic es Y our phone can dir ectly link to the mobile phone netw ork, and enable you t o acc ess and change the settings of various phone servic es for y our phone. Call servic es may include call forw arding, call w aiting, v oicemail, and mor e.
Phone calls 53 T urning Airplane mode on or off In many c ountries, you ar e r equir ed by la w to turn off the phone while on boar d an air craft. A wa y to turn off the phone function is t o swit ch your phone t o Airplane mode .
People About People In People , y ou can easily manage y our communications with c ontacts via phone, messaging, and email. Y ou can also vie w updates on their F acebook and Flickr ac counts.
People 55 People scr een The People scr een giv es y ou easy ac cess t o all y our contacts, as w ell as ev en faster ac cess t o the people and groups of people y ou contact most often.
56 People 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 Create a ne w contact. 2 T ap to edit your My c ontact card. 3 SIM card contact 4 This ic on appears when the contact: Has sent y ou a new t ext or email mes sage, or tried to call y ou but y ou missed the call. People 5 7 Importing contacts fr om y our SIM car d Y ou can cop y all y our SIM contacts t o your phone . Y ou can import them as Phone contacts, Google contacts, or Ex change A ctiv eSync c ontacts, if you ha v e set up the rele v ant acc ounts. Pres s HOME, and then tap > People .
58 People Breaking the c ontact information link betw een c ontacts Pres s HOME, and then tap > People . On the All tab, tap the name of the c ontact (not the icon or photo ) whose c ontact information link y ou w ant to br eak. On the upper right corner of the scr een, tap .
People 59 Deleting contacts Pres s HOME, and then tap > People . On the All tab, pr ess MENU, and then tap Delet e contacts . Select the contacts y ou w ant to delete , and then tap Delete . When pr ompted, tap OK . Sending contact inf ormation as a vCar d via MMS Pres s HOME, and then tap > People .
60 People Contact gr oups On the Groups tab , y ou can assign contacts t o groups so y ou can easily send an SMS, MMS, or email message to a whole gr oup. Y ou can also sync gr oups on y our phone with the groups in y our Google account, ac ces sible via your c omputer’s w eb bro w ser .
People 61 Sending an SMS/MMS message or email t o a group Pres s HOME, and then tap > People . On the Groups tab , tap the group y ou want to send an SMS/MMS message or email t o. People 63 People widget Put the group of people y ou contact most right on the Home scr een of your phone b y adding them as the People widget. Using the People widget, y ou can instantly plac e a call, send a message, or vie w details of a fa v orite c ontact with a single tap.

Mes sages About Messages Messages lets y ou compose and send t e xt (SMS) and multimedia messages (MMS) to other mobile phones. T o open y our message inbo x, pr ess HOME, and then tap > Messages .
70 Messages 3. Fill in one or more r ecipients. Y ou can: Enter phone numbers dir ectly in the T o field. If y ou’re sending the mes sage to se v eral phone numbers, separ ate the phone numbers with a comma. As y ou enter information, an y matching phone numbers fr om y our contacts lis t are display ed.
Messages 71 5. Press MENU and then tap A ttach . 6. On the A ttach window , select from the follo wing file attachments: Picture . Select Camer a t o take a phot o and attach it, or Pictures t o attach a photo fr om y our stor age car d.
72 Messages Ne w mes sage notifications Depending on y our notification settings, the phone will play a ring t one, vibr ate , or display the message briefly in the status bar when y ou receiv e a ne w te xt or multimedia message .
Messages 73 W AP push messages W AP push messages contain a w eb link. Often, the link will be to do wnload a file that y ou hav e r equest ed, for e xample a ring t one. When y ou r eceiv e a W AP push message, a notification icon is display ed in the status bar .
7 4 Messages Managing message c on v ersations T e xt and multimedia messages that ar e sent to and r eceiv ed fr om a contact ( or a number) are gr ouped int o con versa tions or message thr eads in the All messages screen.
Messages 7 5 Pr otecting a message fr om deletion Y ou can lock a message so that it will not be delet ed ev en if y ou delete the other mes sages in the con v ersation. Pres s HOME, and then tap > Messages . On the All messages scr een, tap a message thr ead.
76 Messages Setting t e xt and multimedia mes sage options Pres s HOME, and then tap > Messages . On the All messages scr een, pr ess MENU and then tap Settings to set the t ext or multimedia mes sage options.

90 Social Notification settings Select when to be notified and ho w y ou want t o be notified. A dding the T witter widget Add the T witter widget to let y ou send and follo w y our tw eets right on the Home screen. Pres s HOME, and then tap > Widget > T witter .
Social 91 Using Friend Str eam Str eamline your social netw ork ac counts thr ough Friend Str eam. Update y our status simultaneously , view status updat es, and look through phot o updates fr om y our F acebook, T witter , and other social network ac counts using Friend Str eam.

94 Social Swit ching between activ e chats Y ou can swit ch between chats if y ou hav e more than one chat going. While on a chat scr een, pr ess MENU, and then tap S witch chats .

96 Social Making a friend popular Pres s HOME, and then tap > T alk . In the Friends list, pr ess and hold a friend’ s name. If y ou cannot see the friend, press MENU , and then tap All friends . 3. In the options menu, tap Alwa ys sho w friend .
Social 97 Sho wing or hiding the mobile indicator t o friends Y ou can check what type of de vice y our friend is using to chat in Google T alk. In the friends list, check the image that appears t o the right of your friend’ s name. Pres s HOME, and then tap > T alk .
Email Using Gmail/ Google Mail Gmail/ Google Mail is Google’ s web-based email servic e. Gmail/ Google Mail is configured when y ou first set up y our phone. Depending on y our synchr onization settings, Gmail/ Google Mail on y our phone is automatically s ynchroniz ed with one or more Gmail/ Google Mail acc ounts on the web .
Email 99 Swit ching to another Google A cc ount If y ou hav e set up mor e than one Google Ac count on y our phone, y ou can s witch betw een acc ounts in Gmail/ Google Mail. For mor e information on setting up Google A cc ounts, see “Synchr onizing with a Google A ccount” in the A c counts and sync chapt er .
100 Email 3. T o manage the email message or con versa tion, do any of the follo wing: T ap Archiv e to remo v e the con v ersation fr om your Inbo x while still keeping it s tor ed in y our Google Ac count. T o display y our archiv ed messages, in the Inbo x, pr ess MENU and then tap V iew labels > All Mail .
Email 101 Sending a message 1. Press HOME, and then tap > Gmail / Google Mail . 2. In the Inbo x, pres s MENU and then tap Compose . 3. Enter the message r ecipient’ s email addr ess in the T o field. If y ou are sending the email to se v eral r ecipients, separ ate the email addr esses with a c omma.
102 Email Vie wing y our sent messages In the Inbo x, pres s MENU and then tap Vie w labels > Sent . Managing con v ersations and messages Searching f or messages Y ou can sear ch for messages that c ontain one or more w or ds in their cont ents or in their addres ses, subjects, labels, and so on.
Email 103 Changing Gmail/ Google Mail synchr onization settings 1. Press HOME, and then tap > Gmail / Google Mail . 2. Pres s MENU, and then tap Settings > Labels . 3. T o set the number of day s to s ynchroniz e, tap Number of da ys t o sync . 4.
104 Email Email notifications . Select the check bo x to sho w a notification ic on on the status bar when y ou rec eiv e a new email. T ap Select ringtone if y ou w ant your phone t o play a notifica tion sound when a new email message arriv es. On the ring tone menu, select a ring t one specific to ne w email messages.
Email 105 Mail The Mail applica tion lets you send and r eceiv e email from y our webmail or other ac counts, using POP3 or IMAP .
