8 – English GENERAL SAFETY PRECA UTIONS • The chain brak e (A) can either be activated manually (b y your left hand) or automatically b y the iner tia release mechanism. • The brak e is applied when the front hand guard (B) is pushed f orwards or when the right-hand brake trigger (E) is pushed up and f orwards.

If your hand only lightly touches the front guard or slips o ver it, the f orce may not be enough to trigger the chain brak e.
10 – English GENERAL SAFETY PRECA UTIONS Cutting hardwoods (most broadleaf trees) creates more vibration than cutting softwoods (most conif ers). Cutting with cutting equipment that is blunt or f aulty (wrong type or badly shar pened) will increase the vibration le vel.

English – 13 GENERAL SAFETY PRECA UTIONS T ensioning the chain The more y ou use a chain the longer it becomes. It is theref ore impor tant to adjust the chain regular ly to take up the slack. Check the chain tension e v er y time you refuel. NOTE! A ne w chain has a running-in per iod during which you should check the tension more frequently .
14 – English GENERAL SAFETY PRECA UTIONS If the chain lubrication is not working: • Check that the oil channel in the bar is not obstructed. Clean if necessar y .
English – 15 GENERAL SAFETY PRECA UTIONS Bar Check regularly: • Whether there are burrs on the edges of the bar . Remov e these with a file if necessar y . • Whether the groov e in the bar has become badly worn. Replace the bar if necessar y . • Whether the tip of the bar is une ven or badly worn.
16 – English ASSEMBL Y Fitting the bar and c hain Check that the chain br ake is in disengaged position b y moving the front hand guard to wards the front handle. Remov e the bar nuts and remov e the clutch cov er (chain brak e). T ak e off the transpor tation ring (A).
English – 17 FUEL HANDLING Fuel Note! The machine is equipped with a two-stroke engine and must alwa ys be run using a mixture of gasoline and two- stroke oil. It is impor tant to accurately measure the amount of oil to be mix ed to ensure that the correct mixture is obtained.
18 – English FUEL HANDLING Fueling Clean the area around the fuel cap . Clean the fuel and chain oil tanks regularly . The fuel filter m ust be replaced at least once a year . Contamination in the tanks causes malfunction. Make sure the fuel is w ell mixed b y shaking the container bef ore refuelling.
English – 19 ST AR TING AND ST OPPING Starting and stopping Cold engine Starting: The chain brak e should be activated when starting the chain saw . Activ ate the chain brake b y pushing the front hand guard f orwards. Ignition; choke: Set the chok e control in the choke position.
20 – English ST AR TING AND ST OPPING Note! Pull the front hand guard to wards the front handle . The chain brak e is now disengaged. Y our saw is ready f or use. • Ne ver start a chain saw unless the bar , chain and all cov ers are fitted correctly .
English – 21 W ORKING TECHNIQ UES Bef ore use: 1 Check that the chain br ake works correctly and is not damaged. 2 Check that the rear right hand guard is not damaged. 3 Check that the throttle loc kout w orks correctly and is not damaged. 4 Check that the stop s witch works correctly and is not damaged.
22 – English W ORKING TECHNIQ UES 5 T ake great care when cutting a tree that is under tension. A tree that is under tension ma y spring back to its nor mal position bef ore or after being cut. If y ou position yourself incorrectly or make the cut in the wrong place the tree ma y hit you or the machine and cause y ou to lose control.
English – 23 W ORKING TECHNIQ UES 8 Unless the user resists this pushing f orce there is a risk that the chain saw will mo ve so f ar bac kwards that only the kickbac k zone of the bar is in contact with the tree , which can lead to a kickbac k. Cutting with the bottom edge of the bar , i.
24 – English W ORKING TECHNIQ UES Cutting If you ha v e a pile of logs, each log you attempt to cut should be remov ed from the pile, placed on a sa w horse or runners and cut individually .
English – 25 W ORKING TECHNIQ UES Felling direction The aim is to f ell the tree in a position where you can limb and cross-cut the log as easily as possible .
26 – English W ORKING TECHNIQ UES Ne xt make the bottom cut so that it finishes e xactly at the end of the top cut. The directional cuts should run 1/4 of the diameter through the trunk and the angle between the top cut and bottom cut should be 45 ° .
English – 27 W ORKING TECHNIQ UES Freeing a tree that has fallen badl y Freeing a ”trapped tree” It is v er y dangerous to remov e a trapped tree and there is high accident risk. Ne ver try to fell the tree that is trapped. Ne ver work in the risk zone of the hanging trapped tree .
28 – English W ORKING TECHNIQ UES Kickbac k alwa ys occurs in the cutting plane of the bar . Normally the chain saw and bar are thrown bac kwards and upwards to wards the user . Howe ver , the chain saw ma y mov e in a diff erent direction depending on the wa y it was being used when the kickbac k zone of the bar touched the object.
English – 29 MAINTENANCE General The user must only carry out the maintenance and ser vice work described in this manual. Carb uretor adjustment Due to e xisting environmental and emissions legislation y our chain saw is equipped with mo vement limiters on the carburetor adjuster scre ws.
30 – English MAINTENANCE Correctly adjusted carb uretor When the carb uretor is correctly adjusted the machine accelerates without hesitation and the machine 4-cycles a little at max. speed. It is also impor tant that the chain does not rotate at idle.
English – 31 MAINTENANCE Checking the brake trig ger Place the chain sa w on fir m ground and star t it. Mak e sure the chain does not touch the ground or any other object. See the instructions under the heading Star t and stop. Grasp the chain sa w fir mly , wrapping y our fingers and thumbs around the handles.
32 – English MAINTENANCE Muffler Ne ver use a machine that has a f aulty muffler . Regularly check that the muffler is securely attached to the machine. Some mufflers are equipped with a special spark arrestor screen. If y our machine has this type of muffler , y ou should clean the screen at least once a week.
English – 33 MAINTENANCE 346XP , 353: • Undo the screw in the centre of the pulle y and remov e the pulley . Inser t and f asten a new star ter cord to the pulley . Wind appro x. 3 turns of the star ter cord onto the pulley . Connect the pulley to the recoil spring so that the end of the spring engages in the pulley .
34 – English MAINTENANCE Spark plug The spark plug condition is influenced by: • Incorrect carburetor adjustment. • An incorrect fuel mixture (too much or incorrect type of oil). • A dir ty air filter . These f actors cause deposits on the spark plug electrodes, which ma y result in operating problems and starting difficulties.
English – 35 MAINTENANCE Cooling system T o keep the working temperature as lo w as possible the machine is equipped with a cooling system. The cooling system consists of: 1 Air intake on the starter . 2 Air guide plate. 3 Fins on the flywheel. 4 Cooling fins on the cylinder .
36 – English MAINTENANCE T emperature 0 ° ° ° ° C (32 ° ° ° ° F) or colder: A special winter kit, including necessary par ts and assembly instructions, is av ailable f or using the machine in cold temperatures. 345e: Bef ore usage a hole is made in the cylinder cov er and a winter flap is fitted (see illustration below).
