Chapter 1 Introduction 1.1 Product Overview 1.1.1 Introduction This hardware manual briefly introduces the EonStor A12U and A08U serial ATA (SATA) RAID subsystem series.
EonStor A08U/A12U-G2421 Instal lation and Hardware Reference Manual 1.1.2 Model Variations There are two available models in the 2U version of the EonSt or SATA- II RAID subsystem series. Below is a compari son chart list ing major c omponent s of the tw o models.
Chapter 1: Introduction Figure 1-3: Locations of Key Components in a 12-bay Mode l Figure 1-4: Locations of Key Components in an 8 -bay Model CAUTION! When working with the subsystem, it is importan t to use tools with extreme care. Do not place t ools or other i tems on top of the enclosure to help avoid damaging the outward appearance of chassis.
EonStor A08U/A12U-G2421 Instal lation and Hardware Reference Manual 1.1.3.2 Physical Dimensions The subsystems come in a standard 2U, 19” chassis wi th the following dim ensions: • Measured wit h .
Chapter 1: Introduction • Drive bays with drive tray canisters: The dr ive ba ys are us ed to house the subsystem har d drives. The A12U contain s 12 dr ive ba ys while the A08U co ntains 8 drive bays with a blank plat e covering the lower part of the front panel.

Chapter 1: Introduction 1.1.3.6 Backplane Board An integrated backplane board separate s the front and rear sections of the subsystem s. The PCB board pr ovides traces fo r logic level signal traces and l ow voltage power paths. It contains no user-serviceable components.
EonStor A08U/A12U-G2421 Instal lation and Hardware Reference Manual Figure 1-13: Closing the Front Ha ndles 1.2.2 Drive Trays The subsystems co me with 12 or 8 drive trays (see Figure 1- 14 ) designed to accommodate separately purchased standard 1- inch pitch, 3.
Chapter 1: Introduction The controll er module co ntains no use r-serviceable co mponents. Except when replacing a faulty unit or i nstalling/upgrading the cache m emory inside, the controller module should never be rem oved or opened.
EonStor A08U/A12U-G2421 Instal lation and Hardware Reference Manual • COM Port All controlle r modul es come with one RS-232C (audio jack) serial p ort. The serial port is used for local access to the syst em -embedded configuration utility over th e included serial port cable.
Chapter 1: Introduction 1.2.5 Power Supply Units PN: IFT-9272CPSU-0011 The SATA-based EonS tor subsystems are equipp ed with two (2) redund ant, hot- swappable, 2U, 350W power supply unit (P SUs) modules.
EonStor A08U/A12U-G2421 Instal lation and Hardware Reference Manual 1.2.6 Cooling Fan Modules PN: 9272CfanModE-0010 The SATA-ba sed EonStor s ubsystem s are equippe d with two (f or A08U, t he 8-bay model) or t hree (for A12U, the 12-bay model), 1U single -fan, red undant, hot- swappable c ooling m odules show n in Figure 1-18 .
Chapter 1: Introduction NOTE: There are two values set fo r the upper tempera ture thresho lds. One is set for event notification and the other triggering high er fan rotation sp eed. The preset value for event notificatio n can be changed using the firmware-embedd ed configuration utility, while the fan sp eed trigger is not a user’s option.
EonStor A08U/A12U-G2421 Instal lation and Hardware Reference Manual terminal em ulation pr ogram runni ng on a m anagement com puter that i s connected to the subsystem’s seri al port.
Chapter 1: Introduction 1.4.3 Normalized Airflow Proper su bsystem cooli ng is refer red to as “norm alized” airflow. Normalized airfl ow ensures the su fficient cooling of th e su bsystem and is only attained when all components a re prope rly install ed.
Chapter 2 Hardware Installation 2.1 Introduction This chapter gives detailed instru ctions on how to install the subsystem. When installing the subsystem, it is necessary t o mount the chassis into a rack or cabinet and to install hard drives an d drive trays.
EonStor A12U/A08U-G2421 Instal lation and Hardware Reference Manual (2). One (1) audio-jack-to-DB9 cable is provided to facilitate the connection of the COM1 port for local terminal em ulation access to the array. (3). Two (2) power cord s are provid ed for the pow er conne ctions to the pow er sources.
Chapter 2: Installati on 6. None of the covers or replaceable modules shoul d be rem oved in order to maintain compliance with safety, emission, or thermal requirements. 7. Always secure every enclosu re module by its retainin g screws or m ake sure it i s held in place by its latches.
EonStor A12U/A08U-G2421 Instal lation and Hardware Reference Manual • Install or repla ce the BBU m odule only with a BB U module sup plied by your subsystem vendor. Use of battery cells provided by another source will void our warranty. • Always dispo se of dischar ged or used bat teries in an ec ologicall y responsible manne r.
Chapter 2: Installati on Step 2. Install an optional BBU: a battery backup unit is highly recommended for its pr otection to dat a integri ty. It should be installed prior to o perating the subs ystem.
EonStor A12U/A08U-G2421 Instal lation and Hardware Reference Manual Figure 2-1: Installation Proced ure Flow chart 2.5 Unpacking the Subsystem Use the unpacking ch ecklist in your pack age to check packing contents.
