9 Introduction —Continued Supported Discs The DPS-6.5 supports the following discs. • Some audio CDs feature copy protection that doesn’ t conform to the official CD standard. Since these are nonstandard discs, they may not play properly in the DPS-6.
10 Introduction —Continued About WMA WMA is an acronym for Windo ws Media Audio and refers to an audio compression technology dev eloped by Microsoft Corporation. WMA content can be encoded by using W indows Media ® Player version 7, 7.1, Win- dows Media ® Player for W indows ® XP , or W indows Media ® Player 9 Series.
11 Bef ore Using the DPS-6.5 Notes: • The supplied batteries should last for about six months, although this will vary with usage. • If the remote controller doesn’t work reliably , try replacing both batteries. • Don’t mix ne w and old batteries, or different types of batteries.
12 Fr ont & Rear P anels For detailed information, refer to the pages in brackets. A Standby/On b utton [23, 25] This button is used to set the DPS-6.5 to On or Standby . B Standby indicator [23] This indicator lights up when the DPS-6.5 is in Standby .
13 Front & Rear P anels —Continued 1 D indicator This indicator appears when playing Dolby Digital material. 2 Disc type indicators These indicators show the type of disc loaded. 3 TITLE indicator While stopped, the total number of titles on the cur- rent D VD-V ideo disc is displayed here.
14 Front & Rear P anels —Continued A A UDIO OUTPUT [20–21] These jacks output analog audio. The FR ONT/ D.MIX jacks can be connected to the stereo input on a TV , hi-fi amp, or other component. The 1 and 2 jacks output the same signals so you can use either .
15 Front & Rear P anels —Continued A Standby b utton [23] This button is used to set the DPS-6.5 to Standby . B On button [23] This button is used to turn on the DPS-6.5. Don’t turn on the DPS-6.5 until you’ ve completed, and double checked all connections (pages 17–21).
16 Front & Rear P anels —Continued O Dimmer button This button is used to adjust the display brightness. P Clear [34] This button is used to cancel v arious functions.
17 Connecting the DPS-6.5 • Read the manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’v e completed all audio and video connections.
18 Connecting the DPS-6.5 —Continued The setup described here is a basic setup that allows you to play discs using just the cables supplied with the player . In this setup, stereo audio is played through the speakers in your TV . • This player is equipped with copy protection technol- ogy .
19 Connecting the DPS-6.5 —Continued • The DPS-6.5 has two S V ideo output connectors. They output the same video signal. • Line up the small triangle abov e the jack with the same mark on the p.
20 Connecting the DPS-6.5 —Continued Y ou can connect this player to your A V receiv er using the multichannel analog outputs or one of the digital out- puts. In addition to these connections, you should also connect the 2 channel analog outputs for compatibility with all discs.
21 Connecting the DPS-6.5 —Continued Connecting the Multichannel Analog Outputs If your A V receiver has 5.1 channel analog inputs, we recommend connecting this player to it using the multi- channel analog outputs.
22 Connecting the DPS-6.5 —Continued Y ou can use the following multi-room kits to control the DPS-6.5 when it’ s out of range of the remote controller: • Onkyo Multi-Room System (IR Remote Controller Extension System) • Multiroom A V distribution and control systems such as those made by Niles ® and Xantech ® .
23 Connecting the P ower/T urning on the DPS-6.5 Befor e connecting • Make sure that all the connections on pages 17 – 21 are complete (the connection to a TV is required). Note: • This player features a screen sav er and an auto power off function.
24 Getting Star ted About the on-screen displays V ideo, audio, and other settings can easily be set by using the on-screen setup menus that appear on the con- nected TV . About the setup navigator and other display ed items Operations related to the remote controller buttons are displayed at the bottom of the screen, as shown belo w .
25 Getting Started —Continued This sets the language of this system’ s on-screen dis- plays. The basic playback controls for playing D VD, CD, SA CD, V ideo CD and MP3/WMA discs are cov ered here. Further functions are detailed in the next chapter .
26 Getting Started —Continued Note: •Y ou may find with some D VD discs that some play- back controls don’t w ork in certain parts of the disc. This is not a malfunction. The table below sho ws the basic controls on the remote for playing discs.
27 Getting Started —Continued Many D VD-V ideo and DVD-Audio discs feature menus from which you can select what you want to watch. They may also gi ve access to additional features, such as subtitle and audio language selection, or special features such as slideshows.
28 Pla ying discs Notes: • Many of the functions co vered in this chapter apply to D VD and SA CD discs, V ideo CDs, CDs and WMA/ MP3 JPEG discs, although the exact operation of some varies slightly with the kind of disc loaded. • Some D VDs restrict the use of some functions (ran- dom or repeat, for example) in some or all parts of the disc.
29 Playing discs —Continued Y ou can advance or back up D VD-V ideo and D VD-R/ RW discs frame-by-frame. W ith V ideo CD you can only use frame advance.
30 Playing discs —Continued Use the Disc Navigator to bro wse through the contents of a D VD-V ideo, D VD-R W or V ideo CD disc to find the part you want to play . Important: •Y ou can’t use the Disc Na vigator with V ideo CD in PBC mode. Tip: • Another way to find a particular place on a disc is to use one of the search modes.
31 Playing discs —Continued Use the Disc Navigator to find a particular file or folder by filename. Tip: •T o play the contents of the whole disc rather than just the current folder , exit the Disc Na vigator and start playback using the (play) button.
32 Playing discs —Continued The A-B Repeat function allows you to specify two points (A and B) within a track (CD, V ideo CD) or title (D VD-V ideo and D VD-R W) that form a loop which is played ov er and over . •Y ou can’t use A-B Repeat with DVD-Audio, SA CD, and V ideo CD in PBC mode, or WMA /MP3 files.
33 Playing discs —Continued Use the random play function to play titles or chapters (D VD-V ideo), Groups (D VD-Audio), or tracks (D VD- Audio, SA CD, CD, V ideo CD) at random. (Note that the same track/title/chapter may play more than once.) Y ou can set the random play option when a disc is play- ing or stopped.
34 Playing discs —Continued This feature lets you program the play order of titles/ chapters/tracks on a disc. Important: •Y ou can’t use Program play with VR format D VD-R W discs, V ideo CD playing in PBC mode, WMA/MP3 discs, or while a D VD disc menu is being displayed.
35 Playing discs —Continued There are a number of other options in the program menu in addition to Create/Edit. • Playback Start – Starts playback of a sa ved program list • Playback Stop – .
36 Playing discs —Continued Some D VD-V ideo discs have subtitles in one or more languages; the disc box will usually tell you which sub- title languages are av ailable. Y ou can switch subtitle lan- guage during playback. When playing a D VD-V ideo disc recorded with dialog in two or more languages, you can switch audio language during playback.
37 Playing discs —Continued Using the zoom feature you can magnify a part of the screen by a factor of 2 or 4, while watching a D VD or V ideo CD or playing a JPEG disc. Note: • If you are displaying subtitles, these will disappear when the screen is zoomed.
38 DivX ® video playbac k on the DPS-6.5 (not Nor th American model) DivX is a compressed digital video format created by the DivX ® video codec from DivXNetw orks, Inc. This player can play DivX video files b urned on CD-R/R W/ R OM discs. Keeping the same terminology as D VD- V ideo, individual Di vX video files are called “T itles.
39 DivX® video pla ybac k on the DPS-6.5 (not North American model) — Continued Bro wsing DivX video titles using the Disc Navigator Use the Disc Navigator to bro wse the contents of a disc. Note that if there are other types of files on the same disc, these will not be displayed in the Disc Navigator .
40 DivX® video pla ybac k on the DPS-6.5 (not North American model) — Continued In order to play DivX VOD (video on demand) content on this player , you first need to register the player with your DivX VOD content pro vider . Y ou do this by gener- ating a DivX VOD re gistration code, which you submit to your provider .
41 A udio Settings and Video Adjust men us The Audio Settings menu offers features for adjusting the way discs sound. • Settings: High, Medium, Low , Off (default) When watching Dolby Digital D VDs at low volume, it’ s easy to lose the quieter sounds completely—including some of the dialog.
42 Initial Settings menu The Initial Settings menu provides audio and video out- put settings, parental lock settings, and display settings, among others. If an option is grayed out it means that it cannot be changed at the current time. This is usually because a disc is playing.
43 Initial Settings menu —Continued Digital A udio Out settings Setting Option What it means Digital Out On Digital audio is output from the digital outputs. Note that there is no digital output when playing SA CDs and some D VD-Audio discs regardless of this setting.
44 Initial Settings menu —Continued Language settings Setting Option What it means Audio Langua ge *1 *1 This setting is your preferred audio language for DVD discs. You can switch between the languages recorded on a DVD disc during playback using the Audio button.

If your player is set to a lo wer lev el than the disc, the disc won’ t play .
48 Initial Settings menu —Continued Y ou can find the Country code list in the adjacent col- umn. Setting/changing the Country code 1 Select “Country Code”. 2 Use number b uttons to enter your passw ord, then press Enter. 3 Select a Country code and press Enter.
49 Initial Settings menu —Continued Default setting: STEREO If you’ ve selected DTS > PCM in DTS Out on page 43 or 2 Channel in Audio Output Mode below section, you can choose the way the signal is do wnmixed to PCM audio.
50 Initial Settings menu —Continued Y ou only need to make this setting if you connected this player to your amplifier using the 5.1 channel analog outputs. These settings do not affect an y digital audio output. To get the best surround sound from your system, you should set up the speaker distances from your listening position.
51 Additional inf ormation D VD-V ideo discs come in sev eral different screen aspect ratios, ranging from TV programs, which are generally 4:3, to Cinema- Scope widescreen movies, with an aspect ratio of up to about 7:3. T elevisions, too, come in dif ferent aspect ratios; “stan- dard” 4:3 and widescreen 16:9.
52 Additional inf ormation —Continued Use this procedure to reset all the player’ s settings to the factory default. D VD discs are generally divided into one or more titles. T itles may be further subdivided into chapters. SA CDs, CDs and V ideo CDs are divided into tracks.

58 Glossary Analog audio Direct representation of sound by an electrical signal. See also Digital audio. Aspect ratio The width of a TV screen relati ve to its height. Con ven- tional TVs are 4:3; widescreen models are 16:9. Bonus Group (D VD-Audio onl y) An “extra” group on some D VD-Audio discs that requires a key number to access.
59 FA Q My DPS-6.5 switches on b ut there is nothing displayed on m y TV . • Make sure that the TV is set to the correct video input (not a TV channel). For e xample, if you connected this player to the VIDEO 1 inputs on your TV , switch your TV to VIDEO 1.
60 Tr oubleshooting If you hav e any trouble using your DPS-6.5, check the follo wing table for possible causes and remedies. If you still can’t resolve the issue yourself, please contact your Inte gra dealer . The disc won’t pla y or is automatically ejected after loading.
61 Tr oubleshooting —Continued The analog audio is OK, but there appear s to be no digital audio signal. • Make sure that the Digital Out setting is set to On (page 43).
62 Tr oubleshooting —Continued Buttons on the DPS-6.5 work OK b ut those on the remote controller don’t? • There are no batteries in the remote controller . Install new batteries (page 11). • The batteries are flat. Replace with new batteries (page 11).
