C H A P T E R 1 Quick Start 2 Ensure that your w orkin g area is stat ic-fre e befo re ope ning the bag cont aini ng the m odule . T urn off the switch. Rem ove the plat e covering exp ansio n slot A . If the module is to be installed in a stack with redu ndancy or you require information about installation restrictions , refer to Chap- ter 2.
3 C H A P T E R 1 Quick Start Insert the 1000SX Advanced Module into the slot and push it in until it clicks. Secure the module using the retaining screws. T urn on th e switch. Attach the cables to the module. For details, see Chapter 3. 4 5045 5 5046 6 3100 Server or switch or Stack Single switch Server or switch A23295.
C H A P T E R 1 Quick Start 4 Configure the module using Intel Device View. For details, see Chapter 4. Verify the links using the LEDs. For details about LEDs, see Chapter 2.
5 2 Getting to know the Module Intr oduction When to use the module The 10 00 SX Adv anced Mo dule (E S500M SX A) can only be u sed wi t h Intel Expre ss 500 S eries Switc hes. It provide s a hi gh-spe ed link be- tween the switch or group of switches containing this module and anoth- er dev ice, swi tch or gro up of switc hes.
C H A P T E R 2 Gettin g to kno w the Module 6 T wo mode s of oper ati on This module operates in two modes. • Stack mode (default setting): Used when the switch containing this module is connected to a group o f swit ches (o r s tack) vi a a Matr ix Modu l e .
7 C H A P T E R 2 Gettin g to kno w the Module Installati on in a stack w ith re dundan cy Install the module on the same side of the switch as the Matrix M odule it is to be connected to (for example both modules in Slot A). When pos- sible, do not in stall this module in th e same switch as a Matrix Module.
C H A P T E R 2 Gettin g to kno w the Module 8 Propr ie t ar y 50 0 s eri es VL AN s Overlapping pr oprietary VLANs may cause a pr oblem if mo re than one of the VLANs ar e mapped to a 802.1 Q VLAN. Failure to adhere to th is may lead to connectivity problems.
9 C H A P T E R 2 Gettin g to kno w the Module Module LEDs Understanding the LEDs The 1000SX Advanced Module has three co nnector s. Ea ch connecto r has tw o LED i ndica tors: Note The green LED for th e 1 000Base-SX SIM connector remains solid when there is a link with data acti v ity .

11 3 Cable the module Introduction The cabling and configuration of the 1000SX Ad vanced Module are very closely linked. Only after both processes are complete will the switch function properly.
C H A P T E R 3 Cable t he mo dule 12 Stand-alone Mode Cabling f or a single s witch Follow these instructions to provide a high-speed (1000Base-SX) link between the switch containing the 1000SX Advan.
13 C H A P T E R 3 Cable t he mo dule Stack Mode Cabling to a Matrix M odule in a group of switches The 1000SX Advanced Module is installed in a different switch fro m the Matrix Module, so the cablin.
C H A P T E R 3 Cable t he mo dule 14 5 Plug the SC connectors on the optic f iber cable into the RX and TX sockets, and connect the other end of the cable to a de vice. 6 Check the LEDs on the 1000SX Advanced Module to v erify the links. For more information on LEDs, see Chapter 2.
15 C H A P T E R 3 Cable t he mo dule 3 Plug the other end of the Stacking Cab le into an empty port on the Matrix Module located on the same side of the switch (for exam- ple, both modules in Slot A) , and secure it using th e latches on the connector .
C H A P T E R 3 Cable t he mo dule 16 8 Plug the SC connectors on the f iber optic cables into the RX and TX sockets, and connect the other en d of the cables to a device or group of switc hes wit h redund ancy . 9 Use Intel Device V iew to ensure that the mode settings for th e two 1000SX Advanced Modules are the same.
17 C H A P T E R 3 Cable t he mo dule Cabli ng to a Matri x Module To accomplish successfu l link aggregation, th e modules must b e in- stalled on the same side of separate switches (for example, both modules in Slot A).
C H A P T E R 3 Cable t he mo dule 18 4 Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the second 1000SX Advanced Module. Plug the other end of the Stacking Cable into port 2 on the Matrix Modul e. 5 Plug the SC connectors on the f iber optic cables into the RX and TX sockets, and connect the other en d of the cables to a device or group of switc hes.
19 4 Conf igure the module Introduction The co nfigu ration and cab ling of the 10 00SX Adv anced Module are very closely linked. Only after both processes are complete will the switch functi on pr operly . Note When th e module mode i s chang ed, the conf igur ation is auto- matically saved and Intel ® Device V ie w resets the switch.
