7 Installation CONNECTING Y OUR WLAN USB AD APTER TO PC Note: Once you inser t the installation an d driver CD , it will automatically activate the A utorun installation program. If y our autor un is disable please run the iogear . e xe file on the CD .

Installation Step 6 : After finished install driver and utility on your system, Windo ws XP/2000 Plug the USB adapter into the USB port of your PC. It will automatically detect the USB Adapter. Windo ws ME/98SE Y ou will be asked to restart your PC . After rebooting, plug the USB adapter into the USB por t of your PC .
13 Installation If the icon in the System T ray is in red, it means that Wireless USB Adapter configuration is inv alid or incomplete. Double clic k on that icon and the configuration window will pop up as shown below . It shows the SSID of av ailab le network.
Installation The Link Quality and Signal Strength bar chart is only active when the node is in Infrastr ucture Mode. The bar gr aph displays the quality and strength of the link between the node and its Access P oint. Link Quality is a measurement of receiving and transmitting perf o rmances ov er the radio.
15 General Connection Setting In this panel, you can modify the gener al network connection setting, enable/disab le the WEP , load / modify profile and other setting. Through this control panel, you will be ab le to access the corporate wireless LAN or hot spots such as hotel, air port, and conference hall.
When settings are input, click “ Apply ” to confir m changes of them. General Connection Setting 16.
17 WEP Encryption Ke y Setting Y ou may want an additional measure of security on your wireless network, which can be achie ved by using WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) encryption. WEP encrypts each fr ame transmitted from the radio using one of the K eys entered in this panel.
The default state in Encryption Setting is WEP disab led. Check “ Enab le WEP ” to enable the encr yption. F or more WEP key setting, Click “ WEP Encryption Key Setting ”. Three authentication modes are av ailable: Open System, Shared Ke y and Auto .
19 Click the “ x ” at the upper right hand corner to return to Configuration T ool. WP A Encrytion Setting WP A (Wi-Fi Protected Access) is a security technology for wireless networks. W P A improv es on the authentication and encr yption f eatures of WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy).
WP A Encrytion Setting WP A Pre-Shared Ke y (WP A-PSK) is a simplified but still pow erful form of W P A most suitable f or home Wi-Fi networking. T o use WP A-PSK, a person sets a static ke y or “passphrase” as with WEP .
21 Pr ofile Each profile represents specific settings of the USB adapter . Y ou can set the settings for each profile. Next time when y ou want to change the USB adapter settings, you can just select the profile you w ant to use.
Adv anced Setting Advanced Setting Clic k “ Adv anced Setting ” to select po we r consumption setting that has 3 diff erent modes. In this panel, you can select diff erent user interface and country roaming. It also allows y ou to set the threshold of fragmentation and R TS/CTS.
23 System Information Clic k “ Inf ormation ” and the pop-up window will show the Driver V ersion, Utility V ersion, MAC address of this USB adapter and so on.
WIRELESS LAN BASICS Wireless LAN network defined by IEEE 802.11b/g standard committee could be configured as : 1. Ad Hoc wireless LAN, or 2. Infrastructure wireless LAN. Ad Hoc network is a group of PCs installed with wireless LAN cards, this group of PCs is called a BSS (Basic Service Set).

IP ADDRESS T o use the Wireless-G USB 2.0 Adapter with a computing device, y our computer must be equipped with an USB 1.1 or 2.0 available ports. All drivers and suppor ting softw are fo r the Wireless-G USB 2.0 Adapter must be installed and configured first.
27 In network with static IP addressing, the network administrator manually assigns an IP address to each computer . Once a static IP address is assigned, a computer uses the same IP address e ver y time it reboots and logs on to the netw ork. Y ou may manually change the IP address in the Network Pr oper ties dialog box .

T ro ubleshooting Symptom : The LED is off. Remedy : Make sure the PC Card is inser ted properly . Otherwise contact y our vendor . Symptom : The LED is alwa ys on not blinking. Remedy : Make sure that you hav e installed the driver from attached CD .
31 Symptom : The PC Card is linking, but can’t share files with others . Remedy : Make sure the file and printer sharing function is enab led. Y ou can enable the function by checking the icon of My Computer -> Control Panel -> Netw ork -> file and printer sharing -> I want to be able to giv e others to access to my files .

Glossary 33 Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum This is the method the wireless cards use to transmit data ov er the frequency spectrum. The other method is frequency hopping. Direct sequence spreads the data over one frequency r ange (channel) while frequency hopping jumps from one narrow frequency band to another many times per second.

37 Wi-Fi Protected Access (WP A) The Wi-Fi Alliance put together WP A as a data encryption method for 802.11 wireless LANs . WP A is an industr y- supported, pre-standard version of 802.11i utilizing the T emporal Key Integ rity Protocol (TKIP), which fixes the problems of WEP , including using dynamic k eys.
