6 Regarding TV mo de This product is suitable for NTSC. The discs usi ng TV mode other than NTSC (such as P AL) is converted into NTSC mode before playback. NOTE • Some discs may not be played properly , for exam- ple, the picture movement may not be smooth, or the aspect ratio (ratio of length and width) may be changed.

8 Setting Up the Unit This products allows you to enjoy virtual surround sound using only the fo ur speakers in the front, as it is equipped with the 4-speaker front surround function (See Pattern 1 in the diagram below). In addition to 4-speaker front surround, Pattern 2 and Pattern 3 are available.

While the headphones are connected, the speakers do n ot produce any sound. The numbers refer to the pages in which the parts are explained.
12 Preparation Remote Control CAUTION • Do not use a use d battery and a new battery together . • Do not use different typ es of batteries at the same time. • T ake out the batteries if the remote control is not to be used for a long time. Otherwise it may cause a leakage.

14 Connections 1 Set up the AM antenna (supplied). 2 Connect the antenna cord. 3 T urn the AM loop antenna to find the best position for radio reception. Place the AM loop antenna as far from the main unit as possible. • Do not place the AM loop antenna on a metallic table or close to a TV , computer , or other electric appliances.
Introducti on 15 (Continued) Connections CAUTION • Do not sh ort-circuit the and speaker termi- nals. Doing so may damage the speakers. • Do not co nnect other speakers together with the supplied speakers. The change in impedance may damage the main unit and the speakers.
16 CAUTION • Before co nnecting other equipment, turn off both the main unit and the equipment. CAUTION • For details of signals to be output, refer to page 42. Connecting Other Equipment Read this section when connecting other audio equipment to this product.
Introducti on 17 (Continued) Connections CAUTION • Connect t he main unit directly with a TV (o r a monitor) without routing through a VCR. Otherw ise it may cause picture dist ortion while playing back. (Such picture distortion is caused by a copy protection system, and thus it is not a malfunction.
18 NOTE • When you connect a sub-woofer to the system, set "SUB WFR" to "ON" in "Other Settings" ( page 40). • After making all other necessary connections, connect in th e power plug. • When you insert the p ower cord to a plug socket, ST ANDBY/ON lamp on the main unit is turned on.
Introducti on 19 Basic Ope rations Basic Operations This manual explains th e operations assuming that you will use the remote control. Some buttons on the main unit ar e the same as those on the remote control. Y ou can use either button in this case.
20 Press (or on the main unit). • With the power o ff, pressing either button also turns on the main unit. The function assigned to the b utton starts working at the same time. Remote control: Main unit: NOTE • Cooling fan is built into the main unit for emitting generated heat.

72 Referen ce Handling Discs/MDs • Do not put adhesive tape or stickers, or write on a disc. • Do not bend a disc. • Be sure not to use heart/flower shaped discs or other irregularly shaped discs. Th e use of such discs damages the ma in unit. • Be sure not to use thinners, benzenes, cleaners for analog records, or other chemical agents.
