1 Power sources • When unplugging the unit from the wall outlet, alw ays pull on the plug, not the A C po wer cord. DO NO T handle the A C power cord with w et hands. Moisture condensation Moisture may condense on the lenses inside the unit in the following cases: • After starting to heat the room.

6 Getting Started Unpacking After unpacking, check to be sure that you ha ve all the follo wing items. The number in parentheses indicates the quantity of each piece supplied. • AM (MW) loop antenna (1) • Remote control (1) • Batteries (2) If any item is missing, consult your dealer immediately .
7 T o connect AM (MW) and FM antennas 1 Connect the supplied AM (MW) loop antenna to the AM LOOP terminal. Place the antenna aw ay from the unit and adjust its position for the best reception. 2 Adjust the position f or the FM antenna f or the best reception.
8 Basic and Common Operations Setting the Clock Before operating the unit any further , f irst set the unit’ s clock. When you plug in the po wer cord, “0:00” starts flashing on the display . Y ou can set the clock when the unit is either turned on or in standby mode.
9 Selecting the Sound Modes Y ou can select one of the 4 sound modes. • This function also af fects the sound from headphones. • This function only af fects the playback sound, and does not af fect your recording. T o select the sound modes, press SOUND/B ASS repeatedly .
10 T uning in to a Station 1 Pr ess TUNER/B AND to select either “FM” or “AM. ” The unit automatically turns on and tunes in to the previously recei v ed station—either FM or AM (MW). • Each time you press the button, the band alternates between FM and AM (MW).
11 Presetting Stations Y ou can preset 20 FM and 20 AM (MW) stations manually . In some cases, test frequencies hav e been already stored for the tuner since the factory e xamined the tuner preset function before shipment. This is not a malfunction. Y ou can preset the stations you want into memory by following the presetting method.
12 RDS (Radio Data System) allo ws FM stations to send an additional signal along with their regular pr ogram signals. For e xample, the stations send their station names, as well as information about what type of program the y broadcast, such as sports or music, etc.
13 Playing Back the Entire Disc—Normal Play 1 Pr ess 0 OPEN on the unit. The disc cov er opens. • Y ou can insert a disc while listening to another source. 2 Place a disc corr ectly with its label side up. 3 Close the disc cov er gently . Playing Back Discs This unit has been designed to play back the follo wing discs—CD, CD-R, and CD-R W .
14 Basic Disc Operations While playing a disc, you can do the follo wing operations. T o stop playing for a moment During play , press CD 3 / 8 . While pausing, the elapsed playing time flashes on the display . T o resume playing, press CD 3 / 8 again.
15 Playing at Random — Random Play Y ou can play the tracks at random. On the r emote control ONL Y : Press RANDOM bef or e or during playing. The RANDOM indicator lights up on the display . RANDOM T o exit from Random Play , press RANDOM again. The RANDOM indicator goes of f.
16 For T ape operations, use buttons inside the front co ver on the unit. Playing Back a T ape Y ou can play back type I ta pes only . On the unit ONL Y : 1 Open the front co ver . 2 Press & / ) (stop/cassette holder open). The cassette holder opens.
17 IMPORT ANT : • It should be noted that it may be unlawful to re-r ecord pr e-recorded tapes, records, or discs without the consent of the owner of copyright in the sound or video recording , broadcast or cable pr ogram and in any literary , dramatic, musical, or artistic embodied therein.
18 Recording Discs — Disc Synchronized Recording Y ou can start disc play and recording at the same time. On the unit ONL Y : 1 Put a r ecordable cassette in with the exposed part of the tape down. • See also page 16. 2 Close the cassette holder gently .
19 Using the T imers On the r emote control ONL Y : 1 Pr ess TIMER SET . The (timer) and the ON (on-time) indicators flash and the on-time setting appears on the display . If you does not need to change the on-time setting, go to step 3 . 2 Pr ess PROGRAM to set the on-time y ou want the unit to turn on.
20 9 Pr ess ST ANDBY/ON to turn off the unit if the unit is on. T o deactiv ate the timer temporarily , press TIMER ON/OFF until the (timer) indicator goes of f.
21 Maintenance T o get the best performance of the unit, keep your discs, tapes and mechanism clean. General Notes In general, you will hav e the best performance by keeping your discs, tapes and the mechanism clean. • Store discs and tapes in their cases, and keep them in cabinets or on shelves.
22 If you are ha ving a problem with your unit, check this list for a possible solution before calling for ser vice. If you cannot solve the problem from the hints gi ven here, or the unit has been ph ysically damaged, call a qualified person, such as your dealer , for service.
