Operator Panel 1-2 1.1 Oper a tor P anel The operator panel on to p of the printe r consists of four indicators and two keys. The four indicators light, flash, and go off in combination, indicating the printer’s status.
Operator Panel 1-3 1.1.1 Indicators Re fer to the following table for th e name and description of each indicator . The same indicator can have a variety of meanings, depend ing on the speed at which it is flashing . F or detail s, see Chapter 3 . 1.1.

T oner Cont ainer Replacemen t 2-2 2.1 T oner Container R eplacement When the printer runs low on toner , the (toner) indicator fl ashes on the operator pan el. Be sure to pro mptly replace the toner con tainer and cl ean the inside of the printer when thi s message appears.

T oner Cont ainer Replacemen t 2-4 4 T ake the new toner container from the bag. Hold it with the protective seal (orange-colo red) fa cing up. Shake the toner container horizontally at least 5 times. Th is ensures that the toner is ev enly distributed inside.
T oner Cont ainer Replacemen t 2-5 6 Install the new toner container in th e printer . Push firmly on the top of the container at the positions marked PUSH HERE until you hear it click in place. Cleaning the Printer 2-6 2.2 Cleaning the Printer T o avoid print qual ity problems, the inte rior of the printe r must be cleaned with every toner co ntainer replacement. Cleaning should be done from time to time to avoid print quality problems. 2.2.

General Guide for T roubleshooting 3-2 3.1 Gener al Guide for T r oubleshooting There are quite a few printer problems which may be correct ed by the user . If some kind of printer proble m should occur , che ck the fo llowing before concluding the printer is broken.
Print Quality Problems 3-3 3.2 Print Quality Pr oblems As the following table shows, there are man y possible cau ses of prin t quality problems, such as blank output as. Th e troubleshooting procedure for each type of problem is explained below . If you still can not solve the problem, contact your K yocera Mita dealer .
Print Quality Problems 3-4 F aint or blurred printing Check the EcoPrint setting. When this setting is On, switch it to Off on the KM-NET for Clients . (See the KM-NET for Clients O peration Guide .) Confirm the (t oner) indicator . If the (toner) indicator fl ashes, install a new toner kit.
Print Quality Problems 3-5 Characters out of position. Check the file or program. Check whether the problem is being caused by a PRESCRIBE command error . If the problem occurs only with a specif ic file o r progra m, the most likely cause is an error in a parameter to a command or command syntax.
Indicators 3-6 3.3 Indica tor s There are four indicato rs on the printer’s ope rator panel. These light, flash, and turn off in combination to indica te the printer’s current status. This section explains the indicators on the operator panel and the approp riate corrective action to take in each case.
Indicators 3-7 3.3.1 Maintenance Messages The following table lists e rror messages that can be dealt with by th e user . R ead the explanat ions carefully . Indicator KM-NET for Clients display Corrective Actio n Add paper <paper source> The paper has run out.
Indicators 3-8 Paper path error There is no cassette in the feeder , or the cassette is not inserted properly . After reinserting the paper cass ette, you shoul d be able to print. Replace toner There is no more toner in th e toner container . The printer has stopped be cause there is no more toner .
Indicators 3-9 3.3.2 Er r or s Requiring Ser v ice P ersonnel Attention When the following errors occur , turn off your printer , remove the plug from the AC outlet, and contact your K yocera Mita dealer . The indicators are shown in two different states, a ccording to the way they alternate.
Indicators 3-10 Fuser error (6000 error) Contact your Ky ocera Mita dealer . The waste toner reservoir is full (7980 error) Turn off the printer’s pow er and remove th e process unit from the printer . Gently shake the process unit horizontally a few times, then reinstall it in to the printer .

Indicators 3-12 3.3.3 Er r or Messa ges With the following errors, printing co ntinues when you press the printer’s key . Y ou can confirm these errors by printing a status page. Indicators 3-13 None The printer has halted because you attempted to insert/ remove a memory card in to/from the printer slot while the printer power is on. Turn the power switch off and th en on to restart the printer . Make sure to turn the prin ter power off before inserting/ removing a m emory card.
Indicators 3-14 3.3.4 Nor mal Indicator Display The following displays appear during normal printer operat ion. Indicator KM-NET for Clients display Description Cancelling data Data inside the printer is bei ng canceled. The indicators light in sequ ence from the top, then go off in sequence from the bottom.
Paper Jam Remova l 3-15 3.4 P aper Jam R emo val This section describes how to remove paper when it jams in the printer . The printer will stop whenever paper ja ms in the printer or paper is not fed from a paper cassette. The printer will go offline and (paper jam) indicator will light in the operator panel.
Paper Jam Remova l 3-16 3.4.2 J am at the P aper Cassette Pull out the paper casset te and remove any partially fe d paper , then re- close the paper cassette. Open and clos e the printer’s top cover to clear the error . The printer then automatica lly warms up and resumes printing.

Paper Jam Remova l 3-18 3.4.4 J am Inside the Printer When a paper jam occurs inside the pr inter , clear it using the followi ng procedure. 1 Open the printer’s top and front covers. Figure 3-7 2 Remove the process unit from the printer as shown in the figure.
Paper Jam Remova l 3-19 When the jammed p aper appears to be pinched by rollers, pull it along the normal p aper running direction. 4 After you have removed the jammed paper , put the process unit back into the pri nter . 5 Close the printer’s front cover and top cover .

(A) If the leading edge of the jamme d pap er has been fed further into the printer than the metal regist ration roller , remove the jammed paper by its leading edge.

General Guidelines 4-2 4.1 Gener al Guidelines The printer is desig ned to print on high-qua lity copier bond p aper (the kind used in ordinary dry copier machines), but it can also accept a variety of other types of paper within the limits specified below .
Selecting the Right Paper 4-3 4.2 Selecting the Right P aper Laser printing is a process in volving laser light, electr ostatic discharge, toner , and heat. In addition, as the paper passes through the print er it undergoes cons iderable slid ing, bendin g, and twisting motions.
Selecting the Right Paper 4-4 Paper Size Cassettes and an MP tray are available for the paper si zes listed in Ta b l e 4- 2 . The dimensional tolerances are ±0.7 mm (±0.0276 inches) for the length and width. The angle at the corners must be 90° ±0.
Selecting the Right Paper 4-5 T hickness (Caliper) Thick paper is referred to as high-caliper paper and thi n paper as low- caliper paper . The paper us ed with the printer shou ld be neither extremely thick nor extremely thin.
Selecting the Right Paper 4-6 Other Paper Proper ties Porosity: Refers to the density of the paper structure; that is, to how openly or compactly the f ibers are bonded. Stiffness: Limp paper can buckle inside the p rinter , while paper that is too stiff may b ind.
S pecial Paper 4-7 4.3 Special P aper The following ty pes of special paper can be used: • Transparency (overhead projection film) • Adhesive-backed label paper • Envelope s • Color ed paper • Preprinted paper • Re cycled paper Use paper that i s sold specifically for use with copiers (heat-fu sing type).
S pecial Paper 4-8 4.3.2 Adhesiv e-Bac k ed La bels The basic rule for printing on adhesive labe ls is t hat the adh es ive mus t ne ve r c ome into contact with any part of the printer . Adhesive paper stic king to the drum or rollers will damage the printer .
S pecial Paper 4-9 Postcards F an the stack of postcards and align the edges before lo ading them in the MP tray . Make sure the postcards yo u are going to set are not curled. F eeding curled postcards may cause paper jams. Some postcards have roug h edges on the back (those are created when the paper is cut).

Glossary Glossary-2 Cassette mode This is an operation mode for the MP tray . When this mode is used, approximately 50 sheets of plain paper can be fed continuously , the same as for the cassette. dpi (dots per inch) This indicates the number of dots printed per inch, and is the unit of printer resolu tion.
Glossary Glossary-3 MP tr ay This is an abbreviation for Multi-Purpose tray . The MP tray is used instead of the cassette when printing on envelopes, postcards, transparency sheets, and labels. Of fline The printer can receive data, but cannot print. Turn the printer online if you wan t to print.
Glossary Glossary-4 Sleep mode This mode is activated after a specified amount of time elapses. The printer goes into economy mode and a minimum amount of power is consumed. Y ou can change the amount of time before the prin ter goes in to sleep mode from the KM-NET for Clients .
