Chapter 2 Handling P a per The printer can use a variety of m edia in various sizes. However, any media you will choose to use with the pr inter must be in acco rdance w ith the guidelines and specifications in this chapter .
2.1 General 2-2 2.1 General The Ecosys Color F S-C5016 N pri nter is de signed f or high- grade bo nd (copy) p aper , like those widel y used for or dinary xero graphic cop iers. The printe r will also su pport ot her types of paper as long as they meet th e standards explained in this chapter .
2.1 General 2-3 2.1.3 Minimum and Maximum P aper Size s The minimum and maximum paper s izes are as follows. F or non s tandard pa per such as cut-sheet, the MP (mu lti-purpose) tra y must be us ed. Figure 2-1 2.1.4 Recommended Pa per The following pr oducts are reco mmended for u s e with the printer for optimum performance.
2.2 Sel ecti ng the Ri ght Paper 2-4 2.2 Selecting the Right Paper Printer printing is a process inv olving light, electrostatic discharge, toner , and heat. In addition, as the paper pas ses through the p rinter it u ndergoes considerable sliding, bending, and twisting motio ns.
2.2 Selecting the Right Paper 2-5 2.2.2 Paper propert ies Smoothness Paper should have a smooth , uncoated surface. Paper with a rough or sandy surface can cause gaps in p rintouts. However , paper with surf aces that are too smooth may cause multiple- sheet feedin g and fo gging pr oblems ( fogging is a gray background effect).
2.2 Sel ecti ng the Ri ght Paper 2-6 Thickn ess (Calip er) Thick paper is called high-caliper p aper and thin pa per is called l ow-caliper pap er . Paper used by the printer should be nei ther too t hick nor too th in. If yo u encoun ter paper j am, multiple-sheet feed, or too light printin g problems, the paper may be too thin.
2.2 Selecting the Right Paper 2-7 2.2.3 Other properties of p aper Porosit y The density of pa per structu re, which indicates the co mpactness of the fiber bo nding. It is also the characteristic that allows air to pass through paper ( i.e., air permeability).
2.3 Loadi ng Pape r 2-8 2.3 Loading Paper The following explain s the procedur e for load ing paper in the cassette and the MP tray . 2.3.1 Loading Paper into the Cassette Perform the following procedure to load paper into the cassette. 1 Pull the paper cassette all the way out of the printer .
2.3 Load ing Paper 2-9 2 Push the bottom plate down until it locks . Figure 2-4 Stand ard paper sizes are attached to the in side of the paper cass ette as shown in the following figure.

2.3 Load ing Paper 2-1 1 5 Adjust the position of the paper stopper located at the rear of the paper cassette. Pull the release lever and slide the paper s topper to the desired paper size. When s hipped from the factory , the paper cassette is set to A4 size.

2.3 Load ing Paper 2-13 8 Insert the paper cassette into the slot in the printer . Push it straight in as far as it will go. Figure 2 -12 There is a paper gauge on the r ight side of the f ront of the pap er cassette to indicate the remaini ng paper s upply .
2.3 Loadi ng Pape r 2-14 2.3.2 Loading Paper into the MP (Multi-Purpose) T ray Perform the following procedure to load paper into the MP tray . 1 Pull the MP tray towards you u ntil it stops. Figure 2-14 2 Pull out the subtray . Figure 2-15 3 Adjust the position of the paper guides on the MP tray .

2.4 Special Pa per 2-16 2.4 Speci al Paper Besides pl ain paper , this pr inter can use the fo llowing ty pes of special paper : Y ou can assign one of these special p aper type to a paper cassette or MP (multi-purpose) tray by using the printer ’ s operator panel keys.
2.4 Special Paper 2-17 T ransparency T r ansparencies for overhead projector s must with stan d the heat of fus ing during the printing process. The recommended transp arency prod uct is as follows: 3M CG3700 (Lett er , A4) T r ansparencies must b e placed on th e MP (multi-purpose) tray with the long edge towar ds the printer .
2.4 Special Pa per 2-18 When the label paper has extra margin around th e label’ s outside edges that corresp ond to the marg ins of the prin table area, do not rem ove the extra t op sheet from the carrier sheet until printing is finished.
2.4 Special Paper 2-19 Envelopes Envelopes should be fed in the face-up position, right edge first. Figure 2-22 Since the composition of an envelope is more complex than that of ordinary paper , it is not always possible to ensure consistent printing qu ality over the entire envelope surface.
2.4 Special Pa per 2-20 Colored p aper Colored paper should have the sa me specificati ons as the white bond p aper lis ted. In addition, the pigments in the paper must be able to withstand the heat of fusing during th e pri nting pro ces s (up t o 2 00 °C or 392 °F).
2.5 Paper T ype 2-21 2.5 Paper T ype The printer is capable of printing under the optimum setting for the type of paper being used. Setting the paper type for the paper source from the printer ’ s operator panel will cause the printer to automa tically select the p aper source and print in th e mode best s uited to that ty pe of pape r .
Chapter 3 Using t he Oper a tor Panel This chapter provides the information you need to configure the Ecosys Color printer . In general y ou need to use the operat or pane l onl y to make defau lt sett ings. Y ou can mak e most changes to the printer settin gs using the printer driver trough the application software.
3.1 Unders t anding t he Opera tor Panel 3-2 3.1 Underst anding the Operator Panel The operator panel on the top of the printer has a 2-line by 16-character liquid crystal display ( LCD), ei ght keys , and three indicators (L ED).

GO Key The GO key sw itches the printer between on-line and off-line. Use this key to: • T oggle the printe r ’ s on-line and of f-line states.

3.4 e-MPS 3-21 Job S torage Job storage stores print jobs eith er temporarily or permanently , or in virtual mailboxes, as you click an appro priate radio bu tton on t he printer driver when printin g from a comp uter . 3.4 e-MPS 3-22 Printing Additional Copies using Quick Copy T o print additional copies of a job stored in the printer: 1 Press the MENU key . 2 Press the U or V key repeatedly until e-MPS > appears. 3 Press the Z key . 4 Press the U or V k ey repeatedly until >Quick Copy appears f ollowed by the user name ( Harold , in this example).
3.4 e-MPS 3-23 Deleting a Quick Copy Job All quick copy jobs are automatically deleted when the printer is turned off. If y ou desire to explicitly delete a stored quick copy job , proceed as f ollows: 1 Follow steps 1 throu gh 8 in the above section to let the title of the job to be deleted displayed .
3.4 e-MPS 3-24 3.4. 3 Pri ntin g a Pr ivat e Pr int/ Stored J ob In private prin ting, you can s pecify that a job is not print ed until yo u release the job fro m the operator pa nel. At se nding th e job from the appli cation software, you can specify a 4-di git access code in the printer driver .
3.4 e-MPS 3-25 9 Press the ENTE R key . The ID input line appears. Enter the f our -digit access code entered in the printer driver and press the ENTER key . T o enter the I D, press the Y or Z key to move th e cursor t o the num ber to be changed and th en enter the co rrect number by pressing th e U or V key .

The net work stat us page s hows the network addresses , and other information under various network pr otocols about the network interface card.

3.6 Making Default Settings 3-42 3.6 Making Default Settings Using the operator panel, you can set the default for the following items. Note default settings made using the operator panel may be overridden by the printer driver sett ings and application software.
3.6 Making Default Settings 3-43 3.6.2 Alternati ve Emula tion for KPD L Emulation The auto KPDL [ KPDL (AUTO) ] emulation enables the printer to automatically change the emulation mode according to the print jo b received. The emulation mod e the printer switches alternatively can be s elected using the o perator panel.

Each paper cassette can hold up to approximately 500 sheets of ISO A4, ISO A5, JIS B5, letter , and legal size (80 g/m²) paper .
