21 Discard the alignment page. Notes: • The alignment p age may differ from the one shown. • Streaks on the alignment p age are normal, and d o not indicate a problem. Getting the printer ready to fax CAUTION: Do not use the fax feature during a lightning storm.
3 Connect the telep hone line of your chose n telecommunica tions equipm ent to the left ou tlet of the ad apter. If your telecommunicatio ns equipment uses a US-style (R J11) telephone line, fol low these steps to connect the equipment: 1 Remove the plug from the EXT port on the back of the printer.

There is a plug installed in the EXT port of the printer. This plug is necessary for the proper functioning of the printer. Note: Do not remove the plug. If you remove it, other telecommunications d evices in your home (such as telephones or answering machines ) may not work.
Note: Setup steps may vary depending on your co untry or re gion. Fo r more information on conn ecting the printer to telecommunications e quipment, see the related topic, “Using an RJ11 adapter.
5 Connect a third telephone cord from the answering machine to the EXT port of the printe r. Connecting directly to a telephone wall jack Connect the printer directly to a telephone wall ja ck to ma ke copies or to send and receive faxes without using a computer.
3 Connect the other e nd of the telephone cord i nto the N slot of an acti ve telephone wa ll jack. 4 If you would like to use the same li ne for both fax an d telephone communication , connect a second telephone line (not provided) betwe en the telephon e and t he F slot of an active telephon e wall jack.
2 Connect a telephone cord into the LINE port of the printer, and then plug it into an active telephone wall jack. 3 Remove the protective plug from the EXT po rt of the printer. 4 Connect a second tele phone cord from the co mputer modem to th e EXT port of the printer.

3 Align the clips on the control panel with the holes on the printer, and then press down. 1 2 Understanding the Setup menu and submenus The Setup menu lets you set up the prin ter and specify and change use r default settin gs that are available in some of the other main menus, such as the Copy Mode menu and Scan Mode menu.
The following ta ble explains the fun ction of ea ch submenu or menu item in the Setup menu. Use this To Paper Handling Specify the size an d type of paper loaded. Change Printer Default Settings Specify the values you want for the pr inte r settings and save the values as the new user defaul t settings.
Installing the printer software Using the installation softwa re CD (Windows users only) Using the CD that came with the printer: 1 Start Windows. 2 When the desktop appe ars, insert the software CD. The software installation screen appea rs. 3 Click Install .
Click the Productivity Studio icon for the task you want to complete. Depe nding on th e printer you have, some of the features of this softw are may not be a pplicable. Click To Details Scan • Scan a photo or document. • Save, edit, or share a photo or document.
At the bottom left corner of the Welcom e Scre en, there are two Settings choices: Click To Printer Status and Ma intenance • Open the Solu tion Center.
From here You can: Advanced • Change the appeara nce of th e Printing Status window. • Turn pri nting voice notificatio n on or off. • Change network printing settings. • Share information with us regarding how yo u use the printer. • Obtain software version information.
Installing an internal wireless print server The printer you purchased may contain an internal wireless print se rver that allows the pr inter to be used on a wireless network. If your printer do es not have an inte rnal wireless print server al ready installed , you can purchase one separately.
You are now ready to co nfigure the intern al wirele ss print server to work on your wireless network. What do the Wi-Fi indicator lights mean? • Off indicates that the printer is no t turned on, or a wirele ss print server is not installed. Select this option: – If you want to connect the printer to the computer using a USB cabl e.
Networking General networking Networking overview A network is a collection of devices such as computers, printers, Ethernet hubs, wireless access po ints, and rou ters connected together for communication through cables or through a wireless connection.
Scenario 1: Laptop and printer connected wirelessly with Internet • A computer is conn ected to a wire less router by an Ethernet cable. • A laptop and a prin ter are conne cted wirelessly to the router. • The network is conn ected to the Inte rnet th rough a DSL or a cable modem.
Scenario 3: Computer, laptop, and printer connected wirelessly without Internet • A computer, a laptop, and a printer are connected wirel essly to a wireless access point.
If you purchased the internal wire less print server sepa rately, the MAC address app ears on an adhesive labe l that came with the wireless print server. Attach the adhesi ve label to your printer so you will be able to find the MAC address when you need it.
How to locate a computer IP address 1 Do one of the follo wing: • In Windows Vista, click All Programs Access ories Command Prompt . • In Windows XP, click Start Programs or All Programs Accessories Command Prom pt . 2 Type ipconfig .
A simple type of wireless network is one where a PC with a wireless ada pter communicates dire ctly with a printer equipped for wireless networking. Th is mode of communicatio n is called ad hoc . A device in this type of network must have a valid IP address and be set to ad hoc mode.
Advanced wireless setup Creating an ad hoc wirel ess network using Windows The recommended way to set up your wireless network is to use a wireless access poi nt (wireless router).
7 Select the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings check box. 8 Under Prefer red Networks, delete any ex isting networks. a Click the n etwork to be removed. b Click the Remove button. 9 Click Ad d to create an ad ho c network. 10 In the Network Name (SSID) box, type the name you wa nt to give your wireless netwo rk.
Loading paper and original documents Loading paper 1 Make sure: • You use paper designed for inkjet printers. • If you are using photo, glossy, or heavyweight matte paper , you load it with the glossy or printable side facing you. (If you are not sure which side is the p rintable side, see the instructions th at came with the paper.
Loading envelopes You can load up to 10 env elopes at a time. Warning: Do not use envelop es that have metal cl asps, string ties , or metal folding bars. 1 Load envelop es in the center of the pap er support with the stamp location in the upper l eft corner.
Loading greeting cards, index ca rds, photo cards, and postcards You can load up to 2 5 greeting cards, in dex cards, phot o cards, or postca rds at a time. 1 Load cards with the print side facing you. 2 Make sure: • The cards are loa ded in the center of the paper support.
Loading custom-size paper You can load up to 100 sheets of custom-size pa per at a time. 1 Load paper with the p rint side facing you. 2 Make sure: • The paper size fits within these d imensions: Width: – 76.0–216.0 mm – 3.0–8.5 inches Length: – 127.
Note: The maximum scan area for the scanner gla ss is 216 x 297 mm (8.5 x 11.7 in.). 1 Open the top cover. 2 Place the original document or item fa cedown on the scanner glass in the lower ri ght corner. Note: Photos shou ld be loaded as shown. 3 Close the top cover to avoid dark edges on the scanned image.
Loading original documents into the Automatic Document Feeder You can load up to 25 sheets of an original document in to the Automatic Docume nt Feeder tray for scanning, copying, and faxing. You can lo ad A4, letter, or legal si ze paper into the Automatic Do cument Feeder.
Load up to Make sure 25 sheets of: • Custom paper • Pre-punched paper • Reinforced edge copier pap er • Preprinted forms • Letterhead pape r • The document is load ed text side up. • The paper guide is against the edge of the paper. • The paper size fits within the se dimensions: Width: – 210.
Printing Printing basic documents Printing a document 1 Load paper. 2 With a documen t open, click File Print . 3 Click Properties , Preferences , Op tions , or Setup . 4 Adjust the settings. 5 Click OK . 6 Click OK or Print . Printing a Web page You can use the T oolbar to create a printer-friendly versio n of any Web page.
Printing photos or images from a Web page 1 Load paper. For best results, use ph oto or heavyweight matte paper, with the glossy or printable side facing you. (If you are not sure which side is the p rintable sid e, see the instructions that came wi th the paper.
Collating copies If you print multiple cop ies of a document, you ca n choose to print each copy as a set (co llated) or to print the cop ies as groups of pages (not collated). Collated Not collated 1 With a documen t open, click File Print . 2 Click Properties , Preferences , Op tions , or Setup .
• The memory card or flash drive inserted contains files that have file na me extensions of : – .doc (Microsoft Word) – .xls (Microsoft Excel) – .ppt (Microsoft Powerpoint) – .pdf (Adobe Portable Document Format) – .rtf (Rich Text Format) – .
6 Press to save your changes. 7 Press again to return to the Print Files mode. 8 Press to see a list of files on the removable stora ge device. 9 Press or repea tedly until you reac h the document you want to print. 10 Press to print the file. Pausing print jobs 1 For Windows Vista, click Control Panel Printer .
5 From the Envelope Size l ist, select the envelope size loaded. 6 Select Portrait or Landscape orientation. Notes: • Most envelopes use landsca pe orientation. • Make sure the same o rientation is also selected in the software applicati on. 7 Click OK to close any printer software d ialogs that are open.
Note: Certain programs may ca use text to be clip ped or to disappea r when using extra -large or extra-small font s. If this occurs, try decreasing or increasing the font size. Printing an image as a poster 1 From the desktop, double-click the Productivity Studio icon.
Assembling a booklet 1 Flip the printed stack of papers over in the pape r exit tray. 2 Take the first bundle from the stack, fold it in ha lf, and then set it aside with the fron t page down. 3 Take the next bund le from the stack, fold it in half, and then stack it with the front page down on top of the first bundle.
Printing transparencies 1 Load up to 50 transparenc ies. 2 With a documen t open, click File Print . 3 Click OK or Print . Note: To prevent smudging, remove each tran sparency as it exits, and let it dry be fo re stacking. Transparencie s may require up to 15 minute s to dry.
Select To On Turn on the A button so that all documents are printed on both sides of the paper. Note: The A light stays on until you select a dif ferent op tion. Off Turn off the A button so that all docume nts are printed on one side of the p aper. Note: The A light stays off until you select a d ifferent option.
3 Click the Print L ayout tab. 4 From the Duplexing a rea, select Manual from the drop-down b ox. 5 Select the Print manual duplex instructio ns check box. 6 Press . 7 The printer prints the odd-numbere d pages and the instru ction sheet, which describes ho w to flip and reload the paper.
Use this To Paper Handling Specify the size an d type of paper loaded. Fo r more information, see “Using the Paper Handling submenu” on page 63. Language Change the language shown on the control pa nel. Country Chan ge the country o r region shown on the control panel to your coun try or region.
Resetting factory default settings Resetting all settings This method clears all sta tus pages, such as Fax Send and Receive History, and all information you entered, such as Phone Book or Spee d Dial lists. 1 Turn the printer of f. 2 Press and hold down and , and then p ress to turn the printer on.
Working with photos Retrieving and managing photos Inserting a memory card 1 Insert a memory card. • Insert the card with the brand nam e label facing up.
When the printer detects the memo ry card, the message Memory Card Detected appears on the control panel display. If the printer does not read the memo ry card, remove and reinsert it.
Note: The printer recogn izes one active media device at a ti me. If you insert more than on e media device, a message appears on the displa y prompting you to design ate the device you wan t the printer to recognize .
Understanding Photo and th e Photo Card Mode menu Make sure you have inser ted a memory card or flash dr ive into the printe r. 1 From the control panel, pr ess or re peatedly until Photo is highlighted. 2 Press to view a quick slideshow of the photos on yo ur memory card.
Use this To Print All Photos Choose how to print all p hotos: • 1 Per Page Prints one photo per on e sheet of p hoto paper. • 2 Per Page Prints two photo s per one she et of photo paper. • 3 Per Page Prints three photos per on e sheet of phot o paper.
Editing photos The following tools are available to edit p hot os. Once you make all your selections, press to save your sett ings and exit. The messa ge Temporary edit sett ings for this photo have been saved. appears for a few seconds. Use this To Adjust the brightness of a photo.
Use this To Paper Handling Specify the size and type of paper lo aded. For more information, see “Using the Pa per Handling submenu ” on page 63. Using the Change Photo Default Settings submenu 1 From the Setup menu, press or repeatedly until Change Photo Default Settings is highlighted.
If you set a PIN during network se tup and are being asked for it: 1 Enter the PIN using the and to select a digit loca tion and the and to select a value for that digit. 2 Press . c Press to begin saving photos to the compu ter. d Follow the instructions o n the computer screen.
Transferring selected photos from a CD or flash drive using the computer 1 Insert a CD or a flas h drive into the comput er. 2 If you are usi ng Windows Vista, an “AutoPlay” screen appea rs. Click Transfer Photos to your computer using the Productivity Studi o .
Notes: • If there is not enough memory on the flas h drive, a prompt ap pears on the d isplay. • Do not remove the flash drive until a message appears on the display indi cating that copying is compl ete. Changing the Productivity Studi o temporary files preferences 1 From the desktop, double-click the Productivity Studio icon.
Editing photos Editing photos using the control panel 1 Load photo paper wi th the glossy or printable side facing you. (If you are not sure which side is the prin table side, see the instructions that came with the paper.) 2 Insert a memory card or flash drive.

Note: Click Undo at the top of the wind ow if you are not satisfied with the results after applying any of the One-Click Auto Fixes. Reducing the red-eye effect in a photo 1 From the Productivity Studio Welcome Screen, click File Open to select the im age you wa nt to edit.
4 Use the slider to adjust the hue or saturation of yo ur photo. You can preview the chang es to the image by comparing the Before and After preview panes at the top of the window.
4 Apply a color effect. You can select sepia, antiq ue brown, black and white , or antique grey. 5 Click OK . Changing the Exposure setting of a photo Changing th e Exposure setting let s you corr ect lighting irregularities in your photo. 1 From the Productivity Studio Welcome Screen, click File Open to select the im age you wa nt to edit.
7 From the Quality drop-down lis t, select a print quality. 8 From the Paper Size in the Printer dr op-down list, select t he paper size. 9 To select multiple prints of a photo, or to sel ect photo sizes other than 4 x 6 i n. (10 x 15 cm), se lect the options you want in the tabl e.
4 From the Photo ta b, select and drag a photo into the preview pane on the right side of the scre en. 5 Click the text area to be able to add text to your photo greeting ca rd.
10 Press to go to the print preview screen. 11 If you want to adjust the print settings: a Press . b Make your selections. c Press to save your selections, and then go back to the print preview scre en. 12 Press to print. You can print a p roof sheet: • For all photos on the memo ry card • For the 20 most recent photos, if t here are 20 or more photos on the card • By date, if the photos on the card were take n on diff erent dates.
Warning: Do not touch the USB cable , any network adapte r, or the printer in th e area shown while a ctively printing from a PictBridge-e nabled digital camera. A loss of data can occur. Also, do not remove the USB cab le or network adapter while a ctively printing from a PictBridg e-enabled digital camera.
7 Press or to preview the photos. 8 Press to print. Note: To prevent smudgin g or scratching, avoid touching t he printed surfa ce with your fingers or sharp objects. For best results, remove each printe d sheet individually from the paper ex it tray, and allow th e prints to dry at least 24 hours before stacking, d isplaying, or storing.
Copying Making a copy 1 Load paper. 2 Load an original document fa cedown on the scanner glass. 3 From the control panel, pr ess or re peatedly until Copy is highlighted . 4 Press or to select the number of copies. The number of copies is au tomatically set to 1.

Copying a photo using the computer 1 Place the photo facedown on the scanner glass. 2 From the desktop, double-click the Productivity Studio icon. 3 From the Welcome screen, cli ck Copy . 4 Select Photo . 5 Click Start . The photo appea rs in the right pa ne.
10 Repeat step 8 to step 9 as n eeded. 11 Press to save your settings temporarily. 12 Press . Adjusting the brightness of a copy 1 Load paper. 2 Load an original document fa cedown on the scanner glass. 3 From the control panel, pr ess or re peatedly until Copy is highlighted .
8 Press to save the imag e of the page to the printer memory. 9 When asked if you want to copy anothe r page, pres s to choose Yes . 10 Load the second page of the origina l document facedown on the sca nner glass, and th en press . 11 Repeat step 9 and step 10 until: • All the pages you want to copy have been saved to the printer memory.
7 Press . Notes: • If you choose to copy two or four pa ges on a sheet, the pr inter saves the image of the first page of the or iginal document to the printe r memory. Proceed to step 8. • If you choose to copy one page on a sheet, the pr inter prints the copy au tomatically.
3 From the Copy Mode menu, you can: • Press to preview the job. • Press to return to the Copy Mode menu from the preview. • Press or repeatedly to scroll through the submenus or menu items until you reach the one you wa nt to change. • Press or repeatedly to reach the value you want.
Using the Change Copy Default Settings submenu 1 From the Setup menu, press or repeatedly until Change Copy Default Setting is highlighted . 2 Press . 3 After changing value s, press to save these values and exit this submenu. Use this To Color Specify to print in colo r or black and white.
Scanning Scanning a document 1 Make sure the printer is co nnected to a computer, a nd both the printer a nd the computer are on. 2 Load an original document fa cedown on the scanner glass. 3 From the control panel, pr ess or until Scan is highlighted.
Scanning text for editing The Optical Character Recognitio n (OCR) feature turns a scanned document in to text you can edit with a word- processing appl ication. 1 Make sure the printer is co nnected to a computer, a nd both the printer a nd the computer are powered on.
Scanning multiple photos at one time using the computer 1 Place the photos facedown on the sca nner glass. Note: For best results, place photos with the most spac e p ossible between the photos an d the edges of the scan area. 2 From the desktop, double-click the Productivity Studio icon.
11 Enter a file name for your PDF and select a storage loca tion. 12 Click Save . Canceling a scan job To cancel a job b eing scanned on the scann er glass, go to the control panel, and press . To cancel a scan job start ed in the Product ivity Studio, click Scan and then click Stop .

2 Press down on the cartrid ge carrier levers. 3 Remove the used prin t cartridge or cartrid ges. For more information, see “Removing a used print cartridge” on page 137. 4 If you are installing new prin t cartridges, remove the tape from the back and bottom of the black cartridge, and insert the cartridge in the left carrier.
7 Close the color cartri dge carrier lid. 8 Close the pri nter, making sure to keep your ha nds out from underneath th e scanner unit. The control panel d isplay will prom pt you to load pap er and press to print an alig nment page. Note: The printer must be close d to star t a new scan, print, or co py job.
3 Press down on the cartridge carrier la tch to raise the cartridge carrier lid. 4 Remove the used print ca rtridge. Note: If you are removing both cartri dges, repe at step 3 a nd step 4 for the second cartrid ge. Refilling print cartridges The warranty does not cover repair of failures or damage caused by a refilled cartridge.
If you aligned the cart ridges to improve pr int quality, prin t your document again. If print quality has not improved, clean the print cartridge nozzles. Cleaning the print cartridge nozzles 1 Load plain pa per. 2 Press or repeatedly until Maintenance is highlighted.
4 Using another clean section of the cloth, gently hold th e cloth against the con tacts for about three se conds, and then wipe in the d irection shown. 5 With another clean sectio n of the cloth, re peat step 3 and step 4. 6 Let the nozzles and contacts dry completely.
Cleaning the scanner glass 1 Dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with water. 2 Gently wipe the scanner glass clean. Note: Make sure all ink or corrective fluid on a document is dry before placing the document on the scanner glass. Cleaning the exterior of the printer 1 Make sure that the p rinter is turned off and un plugged from the wall outlet.
Notes: • For best results, use only Lexmark print cartridges. • For best results wh en printing phot os or other high-quality images, use Lexmark Photo Paper or Lexmark Perfectfinish TM Photo Paper. Do not use Lexmark Premium Photo Paper. Your print cartridges are not compatibl e with this type of pape r.
Troubleshooting If you set up your printer on a wireless ne twork, make sure: • The wireless network is working prop erly. • The computer and prin ter are both connected to the same wireless network. • The printer is within the range of the wireless network.
Disconnect and reconnect the power cord 1 Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet, and the n from the printer. 2 Plug the cord all the way into th e power supply on the prin ter. 2 1 3 Plug the cord into an electr ical outlet that other electrical de vices have been using .
Reconnect power supply 1 Press to turn the prin ter off. 2 Disconnect t he power cord from the wall outlet. 3 Gently remove the power supp ly from the printer. 4 Reconnect the power supply to the printer. 5 Plug the power cord int o the wall outlet. 6 Press to turn the printe r on.
Check cartridges 1 Remove the print cartridges. 2 Make sure the sticker and tape have been removed. 1 2 3 Reinsert the cartridges. Check printer default and pause settings 1 Do one of the follo wing: • In Windows Vista, click Control Panel . • In Windows XP, click Start .
Make sure the printer is not in sleep mode If the power l ight is blinking on and off slowly, the printe r is in sleep mode. 1 Unplug the power ca ble from the wall outlet. 2 Wait ten second s, and then insert th e power cable into the wall o utlet. 3 Press to turn the printe r on.

If you do not know the SSID of the networ k, use the following steps to obtain it, and then rerun the Wireless Setup Utility to set up the printer a gain. 1 Enter the IP address of your wireless access point (w ireless router) in to your browser's Web ad dress field.
Check the installation cable 1 Disconnect the i nstallation ca ble an d check it for any obvious damag e. 2 Firmly plug the rectan gular end of the USB cable into the USB port of the computer. The USB port is marked with the USB symbol. 3 Firmly plug the square end o f the USB cable into the USB port on the back of the printer.
3 If the wireless access point (wireless router) responds, you wi ll see several lines appear tha t start with “Reply from”. Turn off and restart the printer. 4 If the wireless access poin t (wireless router) does not respond, after several se conds you will see “Request timed out.

Glossy photo paper or tran sparencies stick together Do photos or transparencies dry and st ick together on the paper exit tray? Remove the photos or tran sparencies from th e paper exit tray as th ey ex it the prin ter. Allow them to dry before stacking.

Check memory card type Make sure that the typ e of memory card you ar e using can be used in the printer. For m ore information, see “Inse rting a memory card” on page 77. Check to see if the memory card is damaged Check that there is no obvious damage to the memo ry card.
Check network connections and po wer Make sure the prin ter is connected to your comp uter through a USB cable, and that both the pr inter and the compu ter are turned on. You cannot p rint documents from a memory card or flash drive thro ugh a wireless network.
Check to see if your wireless connection is active Make sure that your wireless ne twork is conne cted and act ive. Note: If your wireless connection is do wn , use your configuratio n cable to conn ect your printer to your comp uter. Copy troubleshooting Copier does not respond These are possible so lutions.
Adjust the brightness of the copy 1 Load the document fa cedown on th e scanner glass. 2 From the control panel, pr ess or re peatedly to choose Copy . 3 Press . 4 Press repeatedly to choose Lighter/Darker . 5 Press or repeatedly to lighten or d arken the copy.

Certain devices can be connected to the printer so that digital telephone services can be used. • If you are using an ISDN telephone service, conn ect the printer to an analog teleph one port (an R-interfa ce port) on an ISDN terminal adap ter.

Could not detect a proof sheet The document place d on the scanner glass is not a valid proof sheet.
