4 Unpack the prin ter Step 1: Unpac k the printer Gettin g ready f or setup Sele ct a well ventilate d location for your pri nter that p rovides room for the trays, cov er , a nd doors. Cho ose a f irm, le vel surface a way from direc t airflow and temperatur e e xtr emes.
5 Unpack the prin ter CA UTION: The pri nter weighs 30. 4 kg (67 lb), and requires at least t wo people to l ift it safely . Remov e all item s from th e bo x .

G ently lower it in to place. 4 Push the latches a way from each other to l oc k the car tr idge in to place.
11 P ositio n the option al draw er Step 3: P osition the optional dra wer CA UTION: If you are adding a n optio nal draw er sometime after settin g up the pr inte r , b e sure to tur n the pri nter off, unplug the pow er cord, an d discon nect all cables from the back of the pr inter bef o re completi ng these tasks.
12 Prepar e the pr inter Step 4: Prepare the printer P ositio ning the printer Once you have selecte d a locat ion and positio ned an o ptional d r awer (if you hav e one), you ar e ready to po sition t he pri nter . Note: If you ha ve opti onal memo r y to instal l, leav e clearanc e behind th e pr inter .
13 Prepar e the pr inter Securing the drawer to the prin ter If you hav e an optional dra wer , sec ure it to the p rin ter . 1 Align on e brack et with the hole on the r ight side of the pr inter as shown. Press the brack et fla t again st the pr inter , an d then tighten th e thumbsc re w .
14 Prepar e the pr inter 3 Align th e other bra c ket with t he hole on th e left side o f the pr inter as shown. Pr ess the bracket flat again st the pr inter , an d then tighten th e thumbsc re w .

17 Set up the option al duplex unit Step 5: Set up the optional duple x unit Atta chi ng the o ptional duple x unit Y our pr inter suppor ts an o ptional d uple x unit whic h lets you pr int on both s ides of a page.
18 Set up the option al duplex unit 3 Inser t the botto m of t he duplex unit into th e lower opening as shown. 4 Pull up on the top of the d uple x uni t as you s wi ng it up ov e r the top of the p rinter , an d then pre ss it down so that i t locks fully i nto the upp er opening.
19 Set up the option al duplex unit 6 Pull the two green thu mbscrews out to extend them. 7 Push each green thu mbscrew gently toward the printer as you tur n it c loc k wise to tighten it fully . If necess ary , use a flathead screwdriver to tighte n the screws.
20 Set up the option al duplex unit 9 Hook the bracket into the slot, an d then tur n the mounting scre w clockwise to tigh ten. 10 Plug in the duplex connecto r as shown. The d uple x c onnector releas e latch must face awa y from the dup le x uni t.

25 Install memor y , fir mware, or option c ards 4 Push the memor y c ard straight into th e connector until it snaps into p lace. Make sure eac h latch fits over the notch l ocated on e ither side of t he memo ry card.
26 Install memor y , fir mware, or option c ards 2 Holding t he flash memor y or fir mware card by its s ides, align the plas tic pins on the ca rd with the holes on the sy stem boa rd. 3 Push in until the flash mem ory or fir mware card i s fir mly in place.

29 Load pape r Loading th e tra y s F o llow these ins truc tions to lo ad paper i n the st andard an d optional tra ys. 1 Pull the tra y com pletely out. Note: The le ngth and wi dth guides i n an option al 530-she et tra y are s haped di ff erentl y than the guides i n the standa rd tra y , but the function i s the same.
30 Load pape r 3 Squee ze the tabs at the sides of the le ngth guide together as shown. Slide the gu ide to the corre ct positi on f o r the size of paper you are l oading, ac cording to the size indicators on the bottom front of th e tra y . 4 Squee ze the tabs at the sides of th e wi dth g uide t ogeth er as sh own.
31 Load pape r 6 Load th e stack with the recomm ended p rint si de f a ceup. Load th e stack to ward the rear of the tray a s shown. If you load l etterhead paper , place the hea der f ac eup at the re ar of the tray a s shown. For two-sided pri nting, pla ce the hea der f ace down at the front of the tray .
32 Attach cables Step 8: Attac h cables CA UTION: Do not con nect or disc onnect a communica tion por t, a telepor t, or a n y other conne cto r dur i ng a ligh tni ng stor m. The pr inter c an be attac hed to a net work or d irectly to a compute r to print lo ca lly .
33 Attach cables P arallel A parallel p or t is included on base pr inter models. A paralle l por t r equires an IEEE-12 84 compl iant parallel cable such as Le x mark pa r t number 1329605 (3 m [10 ft]). Seri al A ser ial por t can b e attached through the IN A por t on th e printe r system board.
34 Attach cables Attaching a network cab le Y ou can att ach your pr inter to a network using stan dard networ k cables. Eth ernet A 10 BaseT/ 100BaseTX F as t Ether net por t is st andard on the network model. T o at tach the pr inter to a network : 1 Make sure the pr inte r is tur ned off an d unplu gged.
35 Attach cables T urning y our printer on F o llow these in structi ons to tur n your p rinter on. 1 Plug one end of t he pr inter power cord into the s oc ket at t he back of the pr inter a nd the other end into a pr oper ly grounded outlet . 2 T ur n o n the pri nter .
