7 2 Using the operator panel The operator panel has 6 lights and 1 operator p anel button. When the: The printer: Ready/ Data lig ht is on is ready to receiv e and proc ess data . Ready/ Data lig ht is b linking is b usy rece iving or processi ng data.
8 As shown in the il lustration , lights that ar e on, of f , or blinking indica te different pr inter condi tions s uch as pr inter stat us, or the pr inter requires attent ion (for e x ample, out of paper) or the p rint er requir es ser v icin g. 9 3 Canceling a print job Fr om the pri nter op erato r panel If the job you want to cancel i s pr inting a nd the Re ady/Data l ight is blinki ng, do a lon g button press (approximately 3 second s) to reset th e pri nter , whic h cance ls the jo b . Fr om a Windows computer 1 Minimize a ll programs to displ ay the desktop.
10 4 Setting up a print job Once your pri nter is set u p and your dr ivers are installed , you are ready to pr int. Do you want to pr int a letter , add a Do Not Copy waterm ark to a pres entation, a djust the pr int dar knes s setting ? Just choose the pr inter s etting in your printe r dr iver and pr int your job.
11 Now print the env elope: 1 Load an envelope ver ticall y , flap s ide down, with th e stamp ar ea in the top le ft cor ner i n the manual feed. 2 F rom the File menu, se lect Pr in t (or Pr inter) Setup to open your pr inter dri ver .

15 6 Printer media sour ces Y our printe r has t wo standard pa per sourc es: an autom atic p aper feeder , which holds up to 150 sheets of plain paper, and a single-sheet manual f eed. Use tray 1 f or most print jo bs. Use the manual f eed for a single piece of paper, tr ansp arency , envelope, label, or i ndex card.

24 8 Loading transparencies When pr in ting on transparenc ies, use transpa rencies design ed for laser pr inters. We recomme nd Lexmark La ser Pr inter T ransp arencie s: for letter size transpa rencie s, par t numb er 70 X7240; f o r A4 size transpare ncies, par t number 12 A5010.

46 17 Clearing jams If pr int med ia jams in the p rin ter , the P ap er Jam light prompts you to clear the pap er path. If media h as jus t star ted to feed from tra y 1 when the ja m occurs: 1 Pull the media straight up out of t ra y 1. 2 Press the operator p anel button or o pen and close t he pr inter cover to res ume pr intin g.
47 If the jam occurs in the fuser : 1 Open the prin ter cover . 2 Remove the print cartri dge (it ma y be warm). Note: Exposi ng the p hotocondu ctor to l ight m a y dama ge the p rint car tridge. Afte r you remove the print c ar tr idge from the pr inter , cover it or store it in a clean , dar k place.
48 If a jam oc curs w hile p rint ing label s from t ra y 1 or the manual feed: 1 Be su re the la bels re main attac hed to the backing shee t after clear ing the jam. 2 Before resuming l abel prin ting, l oad pap er in tray 1. 3 Press the operator p anel button an d pr int 10 o r more menu setting s page s.
49 If you cannot rea ch the paper easil y: 1 T ur n off th e pri nter . Note: you will lose th e rest of the pr int job. 2 Lift the pr inte r off the supp or t u nit. 3 Clea r the jam . 4 Align th e pri nter with the front o f the s uppor t unit and pl ace it on top of th e suppor t unit.
50 If the jam occurs ju st after the paper f eeds fr om tray 2: 1 Pull tray 2 all t he wa y out. 2 Reach ins ide and g ently pull the paper toward you.

72 19 Solving print quality pr oblems Use the following tables to fin d soluti ons for printi ng problems you have encountere d. If you cannot fix the problem, co ntact the pl ace wher e you bought your pr inter . Y ou may ha ve a printe r par t that requires cleanin g or rep lacem ent by a ser vi ce techn ician.
73 T oner smears or rubs off the pa ge. • T r y a diff erent kind of paper . Pap er design ed f or copie rs give the best quality . • If yo u are p rinting on sp ecial me dia, f or e xample, card stock or labels , be sure y ou selected the correct p aper type in the printer driv er .
74 P ages are b lank. • The print cartridge ma y be ou t of toner . Replace the car tri dge. • Y ou ma y hav e a softwa re erro r . T r y turning the printer off a nd bac k on. The printer ha s mis sing or dam aged parts. • Contac t the plac e where y ou bought y our printer .

88 A uto CRLF /LFCR is set to Off , the f actory def ault. How the printer f ormats the end of a line depend s on the compu ter system being us ed. Use this setting to select wh ether or not the printer automati cally pe rfo r ms a carriage return (CR) aft er a line f eed (LF) or a line f eed after a c arriage return.

It i s not n ecessar y to buy an ex tra perso nal compu ter to att ach each p rinte r to the networ k.
