This Operation Manual describes the functions of the following products: Life Fitness upright exercise bike: C1 5 Life Fitness recumbent exercise bike: R1 5 See Section 6, titled Specifications page in this manual for product-specific features.
1 G ETTING S T ARTED 1.1 I MPORT ANT S AFETY I NSTRUCTIONS SAFETY W ARNING: The safety of the product can be maintained only if it is examined regularly for dam- age and wear . See Preventative Maintenance section for det ails. • Before using this product, it is essential to read this ENTIRE operation manual and ALL instructions.
• T o ensure proper functioning of this product, do not install attachments or accessories that are not provided or recommended by Life Fitness. • Use this product in a well-ventilated area. • Use this product on a solid, level surface. • Make sure that all components are fastened securely .
1.2 S ETUP Read the entire User Manual before setting up the exercise bike. W HERE TO P LACE THE E XERCISE B IKE Following all safety instructions in Section 1.1, move the bike to the location in which it will be used. See Section 6, titled S pecifications, for the dimensions of the footprint.
H OW TO A DJUST THE S EA T TO E NSURE C ORRECT B IOMECHANICAL P OSITIONING Proper seat positioning minimizes unnecessary leg muscle fatigue. T o determine whether or not the seat requires adjust- ment, sit on it and place the balls of the feet on the pedals.
Adjusting the seat on the R1 5 recumbent bike: Lift the spring-loaded adjustment handle located on the right side of the seat. Slide the seat forward or backward as necessary to the proper position and release the pin to complete engagement. Gently rock the seat forward and backward to ensure that it is locked into place.
H OW TO A DJUST THE P EDAL S TRAPS The bike pedal safety straps keep the user's shoes on the pedals during a workout. The straps should fit comfort ably , but they also should be tight enough to prevent shoes from slipping at any point in the pedaling rotation.
2 T HE D ISPLA Y C ONSOLE 2.1 D ISPLA Y C ONSOLE O VERVIEW The computerized display console on the exercise bike allows the user to tailor a workout to personal fitness abilities and goals and to monitor progress. With this easy-to-use console the user can track fitness improvement from one work- out to the next.
A ST ART/ST OP/HOLD T O RESET : Use this key to initiate a number of different functions on the bike. • Beginning a 30-minute QUICK-ST ART MANUAL workout immediately , without setup steps • Beginn.
2.3 T HE W A TER B OTTLE H OLDER AND R EADING R ACK A W A TER BOTTLE HOLDER (A) is mounted on the monocolumn of the bike. A READING RACK (B) for supporting a book or magazine is located at the base of the upper p anel of the console.
2.4 H EART R AT E M ONITORING T HE H AND P ULSE S ENSOR S YSTEM The hand pulse sensors (A) are the built-in heart rate monitoring system on the exercise bike. During a workout, grasp the sensors that are set into the handlebars. For an accurate reading, use a comfortable grip.
3 T HE W ORKOUTS 3.1 W ORKOUT O VERVIEWS This section lists the exercise bike’ s pre-programmed workouts. For more detailed information, see Section 3.2, titled Setting Up and Using the Workouts . QUICK ST ART MANUAL MODE is the fastest way to begin exercising, and it bypasses the step s involved in selecting a specific workout program.
3.2 S ETTING U P AND U SING THE W ORKOUTS T o activate the console, press any key , or simply start pedaling. When the console display lights up, either select QUICK ST ART MANUAL MODE , or select a specific workout. Setting up a specific workout involves four steps, which are described in this section: 1.
S ELECTING A LEVEL FOR R ANDOM , I NTERV AL , S LOPE , P EAK , AND C HALLENGE W ORKOUTS After a duration is entered, the bottom DA T A WINDOW flashes a default level of “1,” which is the easiest of the 9 difficulty levels. Press ENTER to accept the default.
S T ARTING A W ORKOUT After accepting a dif ficulty level, press ST ART to begin the workout. U SING W ORKOUTS IN P ROGRESS The exercise bike MANUAL program features 16 resist ance levels, with “1” being the easiest and “16” being the most difficult.
U SING H EART R AT E M ONITORING TO M AXIMIZE W ORKOUT B ENEFITS Research shows that keeping the heart rate within a certain range while exercising promotes muscular and cardiovascular conditioning for maximum health benefits. This range is between 60 percent and 85 percent of a given user ’s theoretical maximum heart rate.
3.3 W ORKOUT D ESCRIPTIONS I NTERV AL P URPOSE OF I NTERV AL W ORKOUT Combines alternating hills and valleys of high and low resistance levels. Raising and lowering the heart rate in this manner is pr.
R ANDOM P URPOSE OF R ANDOM W ORKOUT Provides a completely random workout profile of hills and valleys every time the user selects this workout. Endless variety reduces boredom. E XPLANA TION OF T IME S EGMENTS The workout has 16 total time segment s, although the workout profile window can only display 8 segments at a time.
M ANUAL P URPOSE OF M ANUAL W ORKOUT Allows the user to be in complete control of the resistance level. The level directly corresponds with the braking system. So if the user sets the level to 9, then the braking resist ance is set to 9. E XPLANA TION OF T IME S EGMENTS The workout has 20 total time segment s displayed in the shape of a racetrack.
P EAK P URPOSE OF P EAK W ORKOUT Maintains a const ant resistance level throughout the workout. Intended to burn fat. E XPLANA TION OF T IME S EGMENTS The workout has 16 total time segment s, although the workout profile window can only display 8 segments at a time.
26 S LOPE P URPOSE OF S LOPE W ORKOUT Gradually increases resistance so user is less aware of the physical demand. Help s user slowly build-up to higher resistance levels and improve cardiovascular endurance.
C HALLENGE P URPOSE OF C HALLENGE W ORKOUT Maintains a high resist ance level throughout the workout. Challenges the user to a high intensity workout that promotes cardiovascu- lar endurance. E XPLANA TION OF T IME S EGMENTS The workout has 16 total time segment s, although the workout profile window can only display 8 segments at a time.
3.4 U SING T HE W ORKOUTS (C HART ) The following charts will help you set up and begin the various workout programs. First, select a workout using the specific workout key . Then, use the Arrows to enter data as prompted. The display will prompt for any additional information that may be needed for the new workout.

30 4.2 P REVENT A TIVE M AINTENANCE S CHEDULE Follow the schedule below to ensure proper operation of the product. 4.3 T ROUBLESHOOTING THE H AND P ULSE S ENSORS If the heart rate reading is erratic or missing, do the following: • Apply hands to both sensors, one in each hand.
4.4 T ROUBLESHOOTING THE E XERCISE B IKE Problem Solution I hear a clicking noise while I'm pedaling. Use the wrench that was included with the bike to ensure the pedals are assembled as tight as possible.
32 Problem Solution My console only lets me choose 1-9 Random, Slope, Peak, Challenge, and Interval programs all use resistance levels when I was told there 1-9 difficulty levels as opposed to resist ance levels.This is because the are 16 resistance levels on this bike program has a predetermined profile.
4.5 H OW TO O BT AIN P RODUCT S ERVICE 1. V erify the symptom and review the operating instructions. The problem may be unfamiliarity with the product and it s fea- tures and workouts. 2. Locate and document the serial number of the unit. The serial number plate is located on the front st abilizer , below the shroud.
