OVERLOAD PROTECTION The machine is electrically protected from producing high output currents. Should the output current exceed 430A, an electronic protection circuit will reduce the current to approximately 100A. The machine will con- tinue to produce this low current until the protection cir- cuit is reset.

SWITCH BOARD & MAIN TRANSFORMER There is one switch boar d in the Invertec V350-Pro. This board incorporates two pairs of input capacitors, two insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) switching circuits, a fan motor drive cir cuit, and a voltage/fre- quency capacitor feedback circuit.
THEOR Y OF OPERA TION E-4 E-4 V350-PRO Return to Section TOC Return to Section TOC Return to Section TOC Return to Section TOC Return to Master TOC Return to Master TOC Return to Master TOC Return to Master TOC FIGURE E.
OUTPUT RECTIFIER AND CHOKE The output rectifier r eceives the AC output from the main transformer secondary and rectifies it to a DC voltage level. Since the output choke is in series with the negative leg of the output rectifier and also in series with the welding load, a filtered DC output is applied to the machine’ s output terminals.
THERMAL PROTECTION T wo normally closed (NC) thermostats protect the machine from excessive operating temperatur es. These thermostats are wir ed in series and are con- nected to the control boar d. One of the thermostats is located on the heat sink of the switch board and the other is located on the output choke.
INSULA TED GA TE BIPOLAR TRANSIST OR (IGBT) OPERA TION An IGBT is a type of transistor . IGBT are semiconduc- tors well suited for high frequency switching and high current applications. Example A in Figure E.8 shows an IGBT in passive mode. There is no gate signal, zer o volts r elative to the source, and ther efore, no curr ent flow .
PULSE WIDTH MODULA TION The term Pulse Width Modulation is used to describe how much time is devoted to conduction in the posi- tive and negative portions of the cycle.
