LSI8751D PCI to SCSI Host Adapter 2-1 Chapter 2 Installing the LSI8751D This chapter provides instructions on how to install the LSI8751D and includes these topics: • Section 2.1, “Quick Installation Procedure , ” page 2-1 • Section 2.2, “Detailed Installation Procedure, ” page 2-2 • Section 2.
2-2 Installing the LSI8751D Step 7. Connect the inter nal and e xter nal SCSI peripherals. Optional: Connect the LED cable on y our SCSI host adapter . Step 8. T er minate the SCSI bus. The SCSI bus requires proper termination and no duplicate SCSI IDs.
Detailed Installation Procedure 2-3 2.2.2 Inserting the Host Adapter F or safe and proper installation, chec k the user’ s manual supplied with your computer and perf or m the follo wing steps. Step 1. Ground yourself bef ore handling this host adapter board.
2-4 Installing the LSI8751D by the edge; do not touch board components or gold connector contacts. The use of a static ground str ap is recommended. Step 4. Locate the slots for PCI plug-in board installation. Ref er to the user’ s manual for y our computer to confir m the location of the PCI slots.
Detailed Installation Procedure 2-5 Step 7. The brack et around the connectors J3 (see Figure 2.1 ) should fit in the slot where you remo ved the b lank panel. Secure the brac ket with the brac ket screw (see Figure 2.2 ) bef ore making the inter nal and e xter nal SCSI bus connections .

Detailed Installation Procedure 2-7 2.2.3.1 Making Internal SCSI Bus Connections This section provides step-b y-step instructions for making internal SCSI bus connections: Step 1. T o connect an inter nal SCSI device, plug the 68-pin connector on one end of the internal SCSI r ibbon cable into the connector J2.
2-8 Installing the LSI8751D Step 2. Plug the 68-pin connector on the other end of the inter nal SCSI ribbon cable into the SCSI connector on y our inter nal SCSI de vice. (See Figure 2.5.) Make sure to match pin 1 on all connections. Figure 2.5 Internal SCSI Ribbon Cable to Internal SCSI Device Connection Step 3.
Detailed Installation Procedure 2-9 Figure 2.7 shows an e xample of this type of chained connection. Make sure to match pin 1 on all connections . Figure 2.
2-10 Installing the LSI8751D Step 4. Most PC cabinets are designed with a front panel LED , which ma y already be connected to an existing IDE driv e. Connect this LED cable to connector J4 on the host adapter , as shown in Figure 2.8 . This allows the front panel LED to indicate activity on the SCSI bus .
Detailed Installation Procedure 2-11 2.2.3.2 Making External SCSI Bus Connections This section provides step-b y-step instructions for making e xter nal SCSI bus connections: Step 1. T o connect external SCSI devices to the LSI8751D , plug the 68- pin connector on one end of a shielded e xter nal SCSI cable (see Figure 2.
2-12 Installing the LSI8751D Step 2. Plug the 68-pin connector on the other end of the shielded e xter nal SCSI cable into the SCSI connector on the e xter nal SCSI de vice.
Detailed Installation Procedure 2-13 Step 3. T o connect more than one external SCSI device to the host adapter , you must chain them together with shielded e xternal SCSI cables .
2-14 Installing the LSI8751D 2.2.4 SCSI Bus T ermination The de vices making up the SCSI bus are connected serially (chained together) with SCSI cables . The first and last ph ysical SCSI devices connected on the ends of the SCSI bus m ust hav e a set of resistors called ter minators.
Detailed Installation Procedure 2-15 2.2.4.1 Internal SCSI Connections If you mak e only internal SCSI device connections to the host adapter , you m ust ter minate the last inter nal de vice on the SCSI bus. Y ou must disable the termination on all other de vices.
2-16 Installing the LSI8751D 2.2.4.2 External SCSI Connections If you mak e only e xter nal SCSI de vice connections to the host adapter , you m ust ter minate the last e xter nal device on the SCSI b us. Y ou must disable the termination on all other de vices.
Detailed Installation Procedure 2-17 2.2.4.3 Internal and External SCSI Connections If you mak e internal and external SCSI device connections to the host adapter , you must terminate the last inter nal device and e xter nal device on the SCSI bus . Y ou must disable the termination on all other devices .
