Black plate (15,1) q Seat Recline WARNING Do not drive with either front seat reclined: Sitting in a reclined position while the vehicle is moving is dangerous because you do not get the full protection from sea t belts. During sudden braking or a collision, you can slide under the lap belt and suffer seriou s inte rnal injur ies.
Black plate (16,1) CAUTION When returni ng a rear-reclined seatback to its upright position, make sure you hold on to the seatback with you r other hand while operating the lever. If the sea tback is not supp orted, it will flip forward suddenly and could cause injury.
Black plate (17,1) Second-Row Seats WARNING Do not stack cargo hi gher than the seatbacks: Stacking luggage or other cargo higher than the seatbacks is dangerous. During a sudden stop or collision, objects can fly around and become projectiles that could hit and injure pa ssengers.
Black plate (18,1) q Seat Slide T o move the seat forward or backward, raise the lever and slide the seat to the desired po sition and release the lever. Make sure the lever returns to its original position and the seat is locked in place by attempting to push it forward and backward.

Black plate (25,1) WARNING Ø Be careful when using the seat warmer. The heat from the seat warmer may be too ho t for some people, as indicated below, and could cause a low-temperatur e burn.
Black plate (26,1) Seat Belt Precautions Seat belts help to d ecrease the possibility of severe injury during accidents and sudden stops. Mazda recommends that the driver and all passengers always wear seat belts. All of the seat belt retractors are designed to keep the lap/shoulder belts out of the way when not in use.
Black plate (27,1) WARNING Always wea r your seat belt and make sure all occupants are pro perly restrai ned: Not wearing a seat belt is extremely dangerous. During a collis ion, occupa nts not wearing seat belts could hit someone or things inside the veh icle or even be thrown out of the vehicle.
Black plate (28,1) CAUTION Belt retract ion may become difficult if the belt s and rings are soiled, so try to keep them clean . For more details abou t cleaning the seat belts, refer to “ Cleani ng the Lap/Shoulder Belt Webbing ” (page 8-54).
Black plate (29,1) q Automatic Locking Mode Always use the automatic locking mode to keep the child-res traint system from shifting to an unsafe position in the event of an acciden t. T o enable seat belt automatic locking mode, pull it all the way out and connect it as instruct ed on the chil d-restraint system.
Black plate (30,1) Seat Belt q Fastening the Seat Belt 1. Grasp the seat belt tongue. 2. Slowly pull o ut the lap/shoulder belt. Lap/shoulder belt Seat belt tongue 3. Insert the seat belt tongue into the seat belt buck le until you hear a click sound.
Black plate (31,1) q Unfastening the Seat Belt Depress the button on the seat belt buckle. If the belt does not fully retract, pull it out and check for kinks or twists. Then make sure it remains untwisted as it retracts. Button NOTE If a belt does not fully retract, inspect it for kinks and twists.
Black plate (32,1) Front Seat Belt Pretensioner and Load Limiting Systems For optimum protection, the driver and front passen ger seat belts are equipp ed with prete nsioner and load limiting systems. For both these systems to work properly y ou must wear the seat belt properly .
Black plate (33,1) Do not modify the compo nents or wiring, or use electronic testing devic es on the pretensioner system: Modifying the componen ts or wiring of the pretensioner system, including the use of electronic testing devices is dangerous.
Black plate (34,1) Seat Belt Extender If your seat belt is not long enough , even when fully extended, a seat belt extender may be available to you at no charge from your Authori zed Mazda Dealer . This extend er will be only for you and for the particula r vehicle and seat.
Black plate (35,1) NOTE When not in use, r emove the seat belt extender and stor e it in the vehicle. If the seat belt extender is left connected, the seat belt extender might get damaged as it will not r etract with the rest of the seat belt and can easily fall out of the door when not in use and be damaged.
Black plate (36,1) Driver seated/ Front passenger not seated The belt minder is a supplement al warning to the seat belt warning function. If the driver's seat belt is not fastened when the ignition switch is turne d to the ON position , the warning light/beep operates to give you further remind ers according to the chart below .
Black plate (37,1) Child Restraint Precautions Mazda strongly urges the use of chil d-restraint systems for children small enough to use them. Y ou are required by law to use a child-restraint system for children in the U.
Black plate (38,1) WARNING Use the correct size child -restraint system: For effective protection in vehicle accidents and sudden stop s, a child must be properly restrained using a seat belt or child-restraint system dep ending on age and size. If not, the child could be seriously injured or even killed in an accident .
Black plate (39,1) Do not install a front -facing child -restraint system on the front pass enger seat unless it is unavoidable: In a collision, the fo rce of a deployin g air bag could cause serious injur y or death to the child.

Black plate (41,1) Installing Child-Restraint Systems Accident statistics reveal that a child is safer in the rear seats. The front passenger's seat is clearly the worst choice for any child under 12, and with rear- facing child-restraint systems it is clearly unsafe due to air bags.

Black plate (50,1) Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS) Precautions The front and side suppl emental rest raint systems (SRS) include 6 air bags. Please verify the air bags equipped o n your vehicle by locating the “ SRS AIRBAG ” location indicators.
Black plate (51,1) WARNING Seat belts must be worn in air bag equipped vehicles: Depending only on the air bags for protection during an ac cident is dangerous.

The side air bags inflate with great force and speed directl y out of the outboard side of the front seat and expand along the front door on the side the car is hit.

Black plate (56,1) How the Air Bags W ork q How the Front Air Bags W ork When air bag crash sensor s detect a frontal imp act of greater than moder ate force, an electrical current is sent to the inflators. Gases are produced to inflate the front air bags and after the infl ation, the front air bags quickly d eflate.
Black plate (57,1) Front passenger seat weight sensors Y our vehicle is equipped with a front passenger seat weight sensors as a part of the supplemental restraint system. (page 2-33). These sensors are located under both of the front passen ger seat rails.

Black plate (75,1) Locking, unlocking with key All doors and the lif tgate lock automatically when the driver's door is locked with the key . All doors and the liftgate unlock when the driver's door is unlocked and the key is held in the unlock position for one second or longer .

WARNING Make sure the opening is clear before closing a window: Closing power windo ws are dangerous. Black plate (81,1) q Operating the Passenger Power Windows The power windows may be operat ed when the power window lock switch on the driver's door is in the unlocked position. The passenger window s may be opened or closed by the power window master control switch es on the driver's door.
Black plate (82,1) Fuel-Filler Lid and Cap WARNING When remov ing the fuel cap, loosen the cap sligh tly and wait for any hissing to stop. Then remove it: Fuel spray is dangerous. Fuel can burn skin and eyes and cause illness if ingested. Fuel spray is rele ased when there is pressure in the fuel tank and the fuel ca p is removed too quickly.

If the ligh t remains on (eve n after you have tightened the cap securely, driven, and restarted the engine several times), it may indicate a different problem.

Black plate (87,1) Immobilizer System The immo bilizer syst em allows the engine to start only with a key the system recognizes. If someone attempts to start the engine with an unrecognized key , the engine will not start, thereby helping to prevent the theft of your vehicle.

Black plate (96,1) Fuel Requirements V ehicles with catalytic converters or oxy gen sensors must use ONL Y UNLEADED FUEL, which wi ll reduce exhaust emissions and keep spark plug fouling to a minimum. Y our Mazda will perform best with fuel listed in the table.
Black plate (97,1) Emission Control System Y our vehicle is equipped with an emission control system (the catalytic converter is part of this syst em) that enables your vehicl e to comply with existing exhaust emissions requirements.
Black plate (98,1) Engine Exhaust (Carbon Monoxide) WARNING Do not drive your vehic le if you sme ll exhaust gas inside the vehicle: Engine exha ust gas is dangerous. This gas contain s carbon monoxide (CO), which is colorless, odorless, and pois onous.

Black plate (102,1) Winter Driving l Carry emergency gear, including tire chains, window scrape r, flares, a small shovel, jumper cables , and a small bag of sand or salt. Ask an Authorized Mazda Dealer to perform the follow ing precautions : l Have the proper ratio of antifreeze in the radiator.
Black plate (103,1) NOTE If your vehicle is equipped with the tire pr essur e monitoring system, the system may not function correctly when using tire chains. Install the chains on the front tires. Do not use chains on the rear tires. Use only genuine Mazda tire chains .

Manual transax le T o turn the key from the ACC to the LOCK position , push the button when the key is at the ACC position, then turn the key to the LOC K position .
