1-1 Chapter 1: Intr oduction Overview The MIL-SM 4804G sw itch is a stacka ble Fast Ether net switch with 48 10BA SE-T/ 100BASE-T X ports, and two 1000BAS E-T por ts 1 that operate in combinat ion with two Small Form Facto r Pluggable (SFP) trans ceiver slo ts.
Introduction 1-2 1 Switch Architect ure The MIL-SM 4804G employs a w ire-spe ed, non-bl ocking s witching fab ric 2 . Th is permits sim ultaneous w ire-spee d transpo rt of multiple packets at low latenc y on all ports. The swit ches also featur es full-d uplex capability on all ports, which effectively doubles the bandwi dth of each conn ection.

Features and Bene fits 1-7 1 Power Supply Receptacles There are two powe r receptacles on the rear pane l of the switch . The standard power rec eptacle is for the AC p ower cord. Th e receptacle labe led “RPS” is for the optional R edundant Power Supply (RPS).
Introduction 1-8 1 Performance • Transp aren t bridgin g • Aggregat e duplex bandwidth of 17.6 Gbps ( MIL-S M4804G) • Switching table with a tot al of 8K MA C address entries • Provides store-and-forward switching • Wire- speed f iltering and f orwarding • Supports flow co ntrol, u sing back press ure for h alf duplex a nd IE EE 802.
2-1 Chapter 2 : Network Pla nning Introduction to Switching A network switch a llows simultane ous transmission of multip le packets via non-cro ssbar swi tching. This means t hat it can parti tion a netwo rk more efficient ly than bridg es or router s.
Network Planni ng 2-2 2 Application Examples The MI L-SM4804G swit ch is not only de signed to segme nt your network , but a lso to provide a w ide range of options in setting up ne twork co nnections . Some typi cal appl icat ions ar e descr ibed be low .
Application Examp les 2-3 2 Network Aggregation Pla n When use d in standalon e mode, the MIL-SM4 804G pr ovides 52 parall el bridging ports (i.e., 52 di stinct co llision dom ains), wh ich can be u sed to c ollapse a com plex network down into a single efficient bridged node, increas ing ov erall ba ndwidth and throug hput.
Network Planni ng 2-4 2 Remote Connections with Fiber Cable Fiber optic t echnology allows for lon ger cabl ing than any ot her medi a type. A 1000BASE-SX (MMF) link can connect to a sit e up to 550 meters away , a 1000BASE- LX (SMF) link up to 5 km, and a 1000BASE-LH link up to 70 km.
Application Examp les 2-5 2 Making VLAN Connecti ons This switc h supports VLAN s which ca n be used to organize any group of network node s into se par ate bro adca st domai ns. VLA Ns conf ine broa dcast traf fic to the ori gina ting gr oup , and c an el iminat e br oadca st stor ms in larg e netw orks.
Network Planni ng 2-6 2 Application Notes 1. Ful l-du plex ope rati on only ap plie s to poin t-to -poin t acces s (such as when a switch is attac hed to a wo rkstation, server or an other switch ). When the switch is conne cted to a hub, both device s must op erate in half -duple x mode.
3-1 Chapte r 3: Installin g the Swit ch Selecting a Sit e Switch un its can be moun ted in a standard 19 -inch eq uipment rack or on a flat surfac e. Be sure to f ollow the gu idelines below wh en choosi ng a location. • The site shou ld: - be at the cent er of all the devices yo u want to lin k and near a p ower outlet .
