Wireless Network Access Point 3 Chapter 2: Planning Y o u r Wireless Network A wireless LAN is a group of computers, each equipped with one Instant W ireless™ Series adapter . Computers in a wireless LAN must be conf igured to share the same radio channel.

9 3. The follo wing screen, sho wn in F igure 5-2, displa ys ho w there are tw o wa ys to conf igure the Access P oint in this Setup W izard. Optimall y , you should perform this setup through a PC on your wired netw ork. Y ou can also set up the Access P oint through one of the PCs on your wireless netw ork.
• IP Addr ess . This IP address must be unique to y our netw ork. (The default IP address of 192.168.1.251.) As this is a pri vate IP address, there is no need to purchase a separate IP address from your service pro vider . • IP Mask . The Access P oint’ s IP Mask (also known as a Subnet Mask) must be the same as your Ethernet netw ork.
• P assphrase. This is the code used w hen lo gging a wireless device onto the wireless netw ork. It is a text string with a maximum of 16 alphanu- meric characters. The WEP K ey Settings are based upon the P assphrase determined by you. T ype that here.
14 • Obtain an IP Addr ess A utomaticall y . Click this radio button to allo w the Access P oint to obtain a dynamic IP address from a DHCP ser ver . • Specify an IP Addr ess. This IP address must be unique to your netw ork. W e suggest you use the default IP address of 192.
The Mode pull-do wn menu will allo w y ou to set the Passphrase in Hexadecimal or ASCII characters. He xadecimal characters on your ke yboard are the letters “ A” through “F” and the numbers “0” through “9”, while ASCII characters are any character on y our ke yboard.
Wireless Network Access Point Only one of the Access P oints must be in P oint to MultiP oint mode. F or all other bridged Access P oints, select the P oint to P oint option, and enter the Remote LAN MA C Addr ess of the Access Point set to P oint to MultiPoint.
