1-2 Introducing the Asanté MacCon Cards The term MacCon car ds is used in this manual to ref er to all cards in the MacCon Famil y . When text applies only to a specific car d, it is identified by its name.
Chapter 2 2-1 Chapter 2 Installing Asanté MacCon Car ds This chapter pro vides step-by-step instructions for installing Asanté MacCon Ethernet network interf ace cards and EtherT alk software.
2-2 Installing Asanté MacCon Cards ❏ The appropriate Asanté card and Ethernet hardware f or your cabling: Refer to Appendix B for detailed Ethernet specifications. Observing the Safety Rules Do not remov e the network interface car d from its anti-static bag until you are r eady to insert it into the expansion slot.

Attac h it to the chassis once y ou have opened the Macintosh, but before handling the Asanté card or touching an y component inside the system. ❏ Handle the Asanté card by the edges and av oid touching the connectors and chips.

Each card consists of tw o par ts: ❏ The larger controller card, which plugs into the e xpansion slot in the Macintosh.

Installing Asanté MacCon Cards 2-9 Installing a MacCon LC Card If you hav e a Macintosh LC, LCII, or Color Classic computer , use the MacCon LCIII or MacCon-i LC card to connect the Macintosh to the Ethernet. Caution Only the LC and LCII computers can accept FPUs on the LC card.
2-10 Installing Asanté MacCon Cards With the car d’ s components facing down, carefully angle its e xternal connector through the Ethernet por t, then line up its edge connector with the motherboar d expansion slot. 5 Gently pr ess on the car d until the connector is fully seated (see Figure 2-9).

Installing Asanté MacCon Cards 2-13 Installing the MacCon3 IIsi and MacCon 30i Cards If you hav e a Macintosh IIsi or a Macintosh SE/30, use a MacCon3 IIsi or a MacCon+ 30i to connect to the Ethernet.
2-14 Installing Asanté MacCon Cards Video Options Even though the Macintosh IIsi has onl y one expansion slot, you can install both a MacCon3 IIsi card and the Radius video card. An exter- nal interface device is not needed and high perf or mance is main- tained.
Installing Asanté MacCon Cards 2-15 Installing the Math Co-processor If your Macintosh, or the Radius card, already has a math co-proces- sor , do not install the Asanté math co-processor option.

Installing Asanté MacCon Cards 2-21 Installing a MacCon+ SE Card in a Macintosh SE The MacCon+ SE networ k interface car d allows you to connect a Macintosh SE to an Ethernet network. The card consists of two parts. ❏ The larger controller car d, which plugs into the e xpansion slot in the Macintosh.

Installing Asanté MacCon Cards 2-23 5 T ake out the motherboard: — Lift the gr ounding shield (padded aluminum sheet) cov- ering the motherboard. — Disconnect the pow er supply cable and the drive cables on the component side of the motherboard.
2-24 Installing Asanté MacCon Cards 9 Place the motherboard (with the MacCon+ controller car d riding pigg yback on it) back into the guides on the left side of the chassis. 10 Reconnect the power suppl y and the disk drive cable on the component side of the motherboard.
Installing Asanté MacCon Cards 2-25 1 Connect the “T” connector to the BNC port on the card. The connector slips on, twists, and locks in place. 2 If the Macintosh is the last node, ter minate one end of the “T” connector using a 50-ohm BNC ter minator (for thin ca- ble).
2-26 Installing Asanté MacCon Cards The follo wing table e xplains which installation to choose: About EtherT alk Phase 1 and Phase 2 EtherT alk Phase1 is limited to 255 devices and allows only one zone. EtherT alk Phase 2 has vir tually no limit (maximum—ov er 16 million devices) and allows multiple zones.

The Easy Install dialog box appear s (see Figure 2-17). ∆ Note: T o properly install the EtherT alk Installer pr o- gram, you must double-clic k the Installer icon.

Chapter 2 3-1 Chapter 3 Asanté SNMP MacAgent Introduction Asanté SNMP MacAgent pr ovides har dwar e and softwar e inf ormation from a Macintosh to an Asanté network management station running AsantéVie w . It works in conjunction with Apple’ s MacTCP software.

4-4 Running other T roubleShooter tests Running the Loopback test The Loopback test v erifies the operation of the major components of the interface cir cuitr y and the ca ble run to the hub by transmitting and receiving special packets. ❖ Note: The Macintosh with the MacCon adapter installed must be connected to a hub to run the Loopback test.

4-6 Running other T roubleShooter tests • CRC Error Indicates the number of packets with CRC (Cyclic Redun- dancy Check) errors received from the netw ork by the adapter . When a packet is transmitted, a mathematical cal- culation is done on the header and data and is appended to the end of the frame.
Using TroubleShooter and ADLS Diagnostic Software 4-7 If the test fails repeatedl y , make a note of the error message, quit the T roubleShooter diagnostics, and call T echnical Support.

Troubleshooting 5-3 Questions and Answers to Common Problems Q The AppleT alk zones are not in the Chooser and I can’t connect to my remote file server . What’s wrong? A ❏ AppleT alk may not be active in the Chooser . ❏ EtherT alk may not be selected in the Network contr ol panel.
5-4 T roubleshooting Q After I restart my Macintosh, the LocalT alk icon is selected, instead of the EtherT alk. A Make sure that: ❏ The Asanté EtherT alk driver is on the start-up disk or in the Sys- tem folder . ❏ The Asanté card is properl y seated.
