4 Parts of the Camera When the V (action) button is pressed, you can perform the fun ction by shaking the camera. As shown in the illustrat ion, use your wrist and shake th e camera for a single up/down or forward/backward str oke to perform the functions.

22 The Basics of Shooting and Playback 1 Press the power switch. • The monitor turns on. • To turn the cam era off, press the powe r switch again. • Note that the power switch is enabled a few seconds after the battery is inserted. Wait a few seconds before pres sing the po wer switch.
23 The Basics of Shooting and Playback C The Auto Off Function • The time that elapses before the camera enters standby mode is about 1 minute. The time can be changed using the Auto off setting in the setup menu ( A 76).

33 Shooting Features Shooting Features The came ra automatic ally sel ects the op timum scene m ode when you f rame a picture, making it even easier to take pictures using settings that su it the scene.
34 Shooting Features B Note after Taking the Camera out of the Water After taking the camera out of water, some times it ma y not automatically switch to another scene fr om underwater mode . Gently brush any water droplets with your ha nd from the camera or wip e it off with a soft and dry cloth.
35 Shooting Features When a scene is selecte d, camera settings are automatic ally optimized for the selected scene . * The icon of th e last sc ene selected is display ed. 1 The camera focuses at infinity. 2 The camera focuses on the area in the center of the frame.
36 Shooting Features Tips and Notes • While the shutter-release button is held a ll the way down , the camera shoots up to about 5 images continuously at a rate of about 6.
37 Shooting Features • From the screen displayed afte r j Night lands cape is selected, select Hand- held or Tripod . • Hand-held (default setting): - When the j icon at the top left of the monitor glows green, press the shutter-release button all the way to ca pture a ser ies of image s which ar e combined into a single image and saved.
38 Shooting Features • The camera captur es a series of up to 10 i mages while the shut ter-release button is held all the way down, and the sharpest image in the ser ies is automatically selected and saved (BSS (Best Shot Selector)). • The flash does not fi re.
39 Shooting Features • From the screen displayed afte r p Easy panora ma is selected, select the shooting range from Normal (180°) or Wide (360°) . • The zoom position is fixed at w ide-angle. • Press the shutter-release button all the wa y down, remove your fi nger from the button, and then slowly pan the camera horizontally.
40 Shooting Features • When you point the camera at a dog or cat, the camera detects the pet’s face and focuses on it. By default, the shutter is automatically released when the camera detects a dog or cat face (pet portrai t auto release). • From the screen displayed afte r O Pet po rtrait is selected, sele ct Single or Continuous .
41 Shooting Features • If you select U nderwater , s creens about record ing of location data ( A 81) and water depth cali bration are displ ayed fo llowed by messages about waterproofing (refer to the back side of th e front cove r). The next m essage is displayed when you press the multi se lector K after reading the messages .

43 Shooting Features • The camera focuses on the area in the center of the frame. • When Selective color or Cross process is selected, use t he multi select or HI to select the desired colo r from the slider. To change settings fo r any of the following functions, pres s the k button to end color selection.
44 Shooting Features When the camera detec ts a smiling face, you can take an ima ge automatically without pres sing the shutter -release button ( smile timer ( A 57)). You can use the skin softening optio n to smooth the skin tones of human faces . 1 Frame the picture.
45 Shooting Features Used for general shooting. Settings can be adjusted to suit the shooting conditions and the type of shot you want to capture. • You can change how the camera sele cts the area of the frame to focus on b y changing the AF area mode setting ( A 56).
46 Shooting Features Using Quick Effects When in A (auto) mode , you can apply effects to images immediately after releasing the shutte r. • The edited image is saved as a separat e file with a different name. 1 Press the k button when the image is displayed after it is taken in A (auto) mode.
47 Shooting Features The functions that are available vary with the shooting mode, as sh own below. * Availability depends on the setting. See “Default Settings” ( A 53 ) for more information.
48 Shooting Features Using the Flash You can select the flash mode to ma tch the shooting condit ions. 1 Press the multi selector H ( m ). 2 Select the desired flash mode ( A 49) and press the k button. • If a setting is not applied by pressing the k button within a few seconds, the selection will be can celed.
49 Shooting Features Available Flash Modes C The Flash Mode Setting • The setting m ay not be available with some shooting modes. • The setting applie d in A (auto) mode is saved in the c amera’s memor y even after the camera is turned off.
50 Shooting Features Using the Self-timer The camera is equipped with a self-timer tha t releases the shutter a bout 10 seconds or 2 se conds after you press the shutter-release bu tton. Set Photo VR to Off in the setup menu ( A 76) when using a tripod to stabilize the camera during shooting.
51 Shooting Features Using Macro Mode Use macro mode when taking clos e-up images. 1 Press the multi selector I ( p ). 2 Select o and press the k button. • If a setting is not applied by pressing the k button within a few seconds, the selection will be can celed.
52 Shooting Features Adjusting Brightness (E xposure Compensation ) You can adjust overall imag e brightness. 1 Press the multi selector K ( o ). 2 Select a compensation value and press the k button. • To brighten the imag e, set a positive (+) value.

60 Shooting Features B Notes About Digital Zoom • Depending on the shooting mode or the current settin gs, digital zoom may not be available ( E 70). • When digital zoom is in effect, the came ra focuses in the cen ter of the frame. Motion detecti on Flash mode ( A 48) When the fla sh fires, Motion detection is disabled.
61 Shooting Features The focus area varie s depe nding on the shooting mode. Using Target Finding AF When AF area mode ( A 56) in A (auto) mode is set to Target finding AF , the camera focuses in th e manner described below. • When the camera dete cts the main subject, a yellow border (focus area) is displayed around it.
62 Shooting Features Using Face Detection In the following shooti ng modes, the camera uses face de tection to automatically focus on human faces. • G (easy auto) mode ( A 33) • Portrait or Night portrait scene mode ( A 35) • Smart portrait mode ( A 44) • When AF area mode ( A 56) in A (auto) mode ( A 45) is set to Face priority .
63 Shooting Features Using Skin Softening When the shutter is released while using on e of the shooting modes list ed below, the camera detects human faces and processes the image t o soften facial skin tones (up to 3 faces). • Smart portrait mode ( A 44) - The skin softening leve l can be adjusted.
64 Shooting Features Focus Lock Focus lock shooting is re commended when the camera does no t activate t he focus area t hat contains the desire d subject. 1 Set AF area mode to Center in A (auto) mode ( A 55). 2 Position the subjec t in the center of the frame and press the shutter-release button halfway.
65 Playback Features Playback Features Moving the z oom control to ward g ( i ) in full-frame playback mode ( A 30) zooms in on the imag e. • You can change the zoom ratio by m oving the zoom control to ward f ( h ) or g ( i ). • To view a different area of the image, press the multi selector HIJK .
66 Playback Features Moving the z oom control to ward f ( h ) in full-frame playback mode ( A 30) displays images as thumbnails. • You can change the number of thum bnails displayed by moving the zoom control toward f ( h ) or g ( i ).
67 Playback Features When viewing images in full-frame pl ayback mode or thumbnail playback mode, you can configur e the menu oper ations listed below by pressing the d button ( A 6).
68 Playback Features * Edited images are saved as separate files. Some im ages may n ot be edit ed. Sequence display options Allows y ou to s elect w hether t o display only t he key picture for a sequence of images captured continuously or to display the sequence as individual images.
69 Recording and Playin g Back Movies Recording and Playing Back Movies 1 Display the shooting screen. • Check the re maining amount of m ovie recording ti me.
70 Recording and Playin g Back Movies B Maximum Movie Length Individual mo vie files cannot exceed 4 GB in size or 29 minutes in length , even when there is su fficient free space on the memory card f or longer r ecording. • The maximum movie le ngth for a single movie is displayed on the s hooting screen.
71 Recording and Playin g Back Movies B Notes About Vibration Reduction During Movie R ecording • When Movie VR ( A 73) in the movie menu is set to On (hybrid) , the ang le of view (i.e., th e area visible in the fram e) becomes narrower during mov ie recording.
72 Recording and Playin g Back Movies Saving Still Images While Recording Movies If the shutter-release button is pressed all the way while recording a movie, one frame is saved as a still image. Movie recording cont inues while the still image is being sa ved.

78 Using Location Data Fu nction s/Displayin g Maps Using Location Data Functions/ Displaying Maps This camera receive s signals from positi oning satellites and obtain its current time and location data. The obtained loc ation data (latitude and longitude) can be recorded on the images to be shot.

80 Using Location Data Fu nction s/Displayin g Maps B Battery Drain While Recording Location Data and Log Recording • When Record location data is se t to On , record location data functions will continue to opera te at the specified inte rval for approximately 6 hour s even after th e c am e ra is tu r ne d o f f.
81 Using Location Data Fu nction s/Displayin g Maps C Underwater Recording of Location Data While the location data is being obtained, if you select Underwater scene mode, or select G (easy auto) mode and then subme rge the camera unde r water, the screen on the right is displayed.
82 Using Location Data Fu nction s/Displayin g Maps The current position or image shooting location can be displayed on the screen using the camera’s internal m ap informa tion. To display the map, press the U (map) button in shooting mode or playback mode.
83 Using Location Data Fu nction s/Displayin g Maps B Map Display • The map display cannot be rotated. Only the north up display (the top of the screen indicates the north) is available. • The map display s cale varies depe nding on which country is shown on th e map.
