3 2. Battery installation and chargin g Before you can use your new phone, you need to attach and charge the battery . Attaching the battery To attach the batte ry , pla ce it on the back of the ph one as shown and s lide it toward t he top of the phone until it clicks into place.
4 Prob lems c hargin g If your phone displays Not char ging , cha rging is suspended. Check t hat the ba ttery is conne cted to an a pproved charging device. If the battery is very hot or c old, wait for a while; ch arging will aut omatically resu me after the batte ry is restored to its normal operating s tate.
5 Removing the battery Note: Switch off the phone before removing the battery! 1 Press and hold the button at the top of the battery . 2 Slide th e battery to ward the bottom of the phone. 3 Lift the battery off the phone. Important battery information • The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of t imes but it will eventually wear out.

7 Clear key Use th e clea r key to: • delete a charac ter to the left of the cursor • clear all cha racters from the display (press and hold) • return t o the previous menu level • return from.

11 Entering letters and numbers Curs or The cursor is a blin king vertical l ine that appears on t he screen when y ou are entering text or numbers. Characters you enter appear to th e right of th e cursor . Press ing the key dele tes the charact er to the left of the cursor .
12 Spec ial char acter s in name s In ABC mod e you can pre ss the key to view the special characters below . Y ou can us e these characters whe n saving names in your phone book.
13 Keyguard (loc king the keypa d) The Keyguard feature allows you to “lock” your pho ne’s ke ypad so that accident al keypresse s have no effect. This is han dy when your ph one is in a pocket or purse. Note: K eyguard is n ot a security feature and will n ot prevent unauthorized use of your phon e.
14 4. Basic functions Turning the phone on or of f Press and hold the key for one second. Note: If the phone asks for a lock code, see ‘Lock code’ on page 52.
15 Get a stro ng signal When you are at the start sc reen (see pag e 7) or in a call, th e strength of th e radio signal is indicated by the signal indicators on the left side of your phone’s display . These indicators scroll as the sign al stren gth increa ses and decre ases.
16 Last number redial The las t 1 0 number s you dialed ar e stored i n the diale d calls list. Use this l ist to redial a numbe r you have calle d recently . 1 From the start screen, press to access the dialed calls list. 2 Scroll to the d esired number .
17 Cal ler ID Caller ID is a network service that can display th e name and phone number of the person callin g you, if the inform ation is available. Contact your service provider for details. If the caller ca n be iden tified, th e phone may dis play the ca ller's name and phone num ber .
18 5. Settings This section describes some phone settings that allow you to customize your phon e to suit your preferences and that you probably won’t change v ery often. Automatic redial Use Menu 4 1 2 to turn this fea ture on or off. W hen this feature is on and the wireless network is busy , your phone will redial a number up to three times.
19 Note: The order of the follo wing steps may vary , depending on which dialing sequence your card uses. 6 Enter acc ess number (us ually the 1 -800 numbe r listed on the back of the calling c ard), then press OK . 7 Enter your card numb er and/or PIN, then press OK .
20 Clock Y our phone ha s an internal clock that can be displayed on th e start screen. The clock must be set in order for ca ll times to be re corded (see ‘Ca ll log’ on page 40). If you remov e the battery for longe r than a couple of seconds, the time will be lost.
21 Language Use Menu 4 2 2 to set the language of your phone’s display . You can choose from English, French, Spanish, P ortugues e, Russian, a nd Hebrew .
22 Asce nding The phone rings using the currently selected ringing tone. The ringing volume starts low and increases with su ccessiv e rings. Ring once The phone rings once using the currently selected ring ing tone. Beep once The phone be eps once. Silent T he pho ne ma kes no s ound wh en you receive a call.
23 Warnin g and g ame tone s Use Menu 8 6 to turn your phone’s warning and game tones on or off. Warning tones are created by events such as con- firmations, errors, power on, battery low , and recharge battery .
24 Car Auto matical ly selec ted when your phon e is conn ected to a car k it. Remem bers any changes y ou make to settings in Menu 8, My to nes, an d uses t hem the n ext ti me you connec t the phone to a car kit.
25 6. Emergency calls 1 If the phone is no t on, switch it on. 2 Press and hold t he key for sev eral seconds to ready the phone for calls . 3 Ke y in th e emerge ncy numbe r for y our pre sent l ocation (e.g. 9 1 1 or other official eme rgency number).
26 Emergency ke y 9 Use Menu 4 1 1 to turn on this feature. W hen this feature is on, the ph one attempts to make an em ergency c all when you: • press and hold the 9 key , or • press 9 , then press Call . Note: When Keyguard is active , the only way to make an emerg ency cal l is t o dial t he emer gency nu mber , then press Call .
27 7. A dvanc ed fu nctio ns Network feature sett ing Call forwarding, call waiting, and send own number are network s ervices available through your serv ice provider . These features do not appear in your phone’s Netw ork serv ices menu until you save the re lated feature code(s) given to you by your service provider .
28 In-call menu When you are in a call , the function of the Navi™ key is End . Howe ver , your phone has an in-c all menu that allows you to perform several functions whil e in a call. To use the in-call menu, press while you are in a call, then press Options .
29 Endi ng ca lls Press End or select End from the in-call me nu. Note: The wireless network does not support ending individual calls when more than one call is in progress. Call wa iting Call wait ing is a network service that allow s you to rece ive an incoming call when you’re already in a call.
30 Cancelli ng call wa iting: me nu method Y ou can save the code for c ancelling call w aiting given by your service provider and then use Menu 4 4 6 2 to cancel call waiting .
31 Menu me thod Y ou can save the code for c ancelling call forw arding and then use th e menu t o cancel ca ll forwarding. See ‘Adding feature cancellation codes to t he menu’ on page 27. Digital/analog selection Use Menu 4 4 1 to choose a mode for your phon e.
32 Making c alls using one-touch dialing Press and hold a number key (2 through 8) for a few s econds to call the n umber assigned to it. Your phone finds the phone number, display s it briefly , then dials it. Y ou can also enter t he number of the 1-touch dialin g key (for example, 2) a nd press Call .
33 Stan dard me thod 1 Dial th e featu re code followed by the n umber y ou want to call. 2 Press Call . Example : If the feature code to hide your n umber is *67 and the numbe r you want to dial is (214) 555-1234, dial *672 14555 1234 , then pres s Call .
34 System selection Y our phone is capable of workin g in residential, private, and pub lic s yste ms. Y ou can choose how your phone selects a networ k to use. This feature is Menu 5 in your phone. The default is Auto mati c , which me ans your phone automatically searches for networks available to you and c hooses the appropriate one.
35 Also, your service provider has programmed a list of pref erred syst ems into your phone. These are s ystems wi th which your service provider has roaming agreements. Use Menu 4 4 2 to tell y our phone how to choose a public system (n etwork). Y our selection rema ins active un til you change it.
36 Setting manua l touch tone length Use Menu 4 2 1 1 to set the len gth of touc h tones create d when y ou pres s a key: Cont inuous means the tone sounds for as long as you press and hold the key . Fixed sets the ton e length t o one tenth of a second, regardless of how long you press a nd hold the ke y .
37 8. Phone book Y our phone allows you to save 1 00 phone numbers and associated names s o they are right at your fingertips for easy d ial ing. Saving names and numbers Saving a name and number is easy! Just en ter the phon e number, press or , then p ress Save .
38 Notes about s aving name s • A n ame may app ear on ly on ce in me mory . If yo u try to save a name that already exists in memory , the phone asks i f you wan t to repla ce the existing name. • If you try to save a phone number and y our phone book is full, you a re given the option to replace an ex isting entry .
39 Editing names and numbers To edit phone book entries, press Men u 1 3 , scroll to the entry yo u want to ed it, then pres s Edit . Edit the nam e and numbe r as needed. Erasing names and numbers Use Menu 1 4 to erase entries from your phone book. One by one le ts you select one entry a t a time to be erased.
40 9. Call log For your co nvenience, the call log (Menu 3) sav es a list o f phone numbers you have diale d, and can show you how much time you have spent on th e phone. If you subscribe to the caller I D network servic e, the call log als o records the phone number s of missed calls and received ca lls.
41 Viewing the missed c alls list at a ny time Use Menu 3 1 to view the missed c alls list at any tim e. T o dial a number , press O ptions , then choose Call . Received calls If you su bscribe to the caller ID netw ork servic e, your phon e automati cally stores the phone nu mbers of the 1 0 most rece nt cal ls you’v e answer ed.
42 Viewin g call ti mers Use Menu 3 5 to v iew the various c all timer s. Last call is the duration o f the last call, or current call if applicable. All call s is the duration of all calls since the timers were last reset. Life ti mer displays the duration of all calls for the life of your phone and cannot be reset.
43 1 0. Voice messages V oice mail is a network s ervice that allows callers to reco rd a mes sage whe n you c annot be reac hed. Y ou can t hen cal l your voic e mailbox and retrieve your me ssages. Saving your voice mailbox number When you subscribe to voice mail, your ser vice provider will give you a voice mailbox number .
44 1 1. Text messages The te xt mess age net work se rvice allows yo u to re ceive te xt messag es from a va riety of so urces, such as a Web page set up by your service provider .
45 About the In box The Inbox holds text messages that have not bee n deleted or saved . Use Menu 2 1 1 to access the Inbox at any time . Y ou wi ll see a list of me ssage headers. The icon in fro nt of the header indicates that a message has been read.
46 Additional features f or the 5 120i If you hav e the Nokia 5120i, you have t he capability to write, send, forward and reply to text messages. Y our phone must be a 5120i to perform these func tions, and you must subscribe to th e text m essaging netw ork service.
47 Message s ettings This network feature allows you to mark y our text messag e as urge nt, plac e your numb er withi n the text m essage, or request a read receipt. This is a network feature. C ontact your service provider for more informati on. Message set tings are loca ted in the Writ e ne w options menu as Settings .
48 Forw arding a te xt mess age 1 Highlight the message tha t you want to forward 2 Press Read , then press Options 3 Scroll to Forward , press OK 4 Send th e messag e as you no rmally woul d Replying.
49 12. Extra features Alarm clock The alarm clock feature is based on your phone’s internal clock and sounds an alert at a time yo u specify . Setti ng the alarm cloc k Use Menu 7 1 to turn the alarm clock on or off. Note that when you’ re entering th e alarm tim e, use two digits for both hours and m inutes (for example, enter 1:30 as 0 130 ).
50 • T o shut off the alarm, press any key except Snoo ze . The phone displays K eep the phone on? Press Ye s to keep it on or to switch it off. •I f y o u p r e s s Snooze , the phone turn s itself off for 1 0 minutes , then the alarm sounds again.
51 Logic Find the secret combin ation of figures in a column. Possible figures are shown at the top of the display . Press the 5 k ey repeatedly to select a figure and the 2, 4, and 8 k eys to move the curs or . Once you thi nk you ha ve the rig ht combination , press the ke y .
52 13. Security features Access codes overview Access codes cons ist of the lock cod e and secu rity code. When you get you r phone, you should change these cod es from their defaults, write dow n the new codes, and keep them in a safe place away from t he phone.
53 Rest rictin g inco ming c alls Choose Rest rict inco ming ca lls to prevent your phone from receiving incom ing calls. Enter y our security code, th en press OK .
54 3 If you wa nt, give a name of up to 1 0 charac ters to the re striction (such as Joey , Long dist , or 1-800 #s ), th en pr ess OK . The entry is added to your list of restricted numbers. 55 Answering a cal l when the phone is locked Press An swer . Saving the unlocked phone number Use Menu 4 3 2 2 to save a number that may be called even when y our phone is locked. You will be require d to enter th e lock code . Callin g the unlock ed phone number Press or , or manually enter the number exactly as it is saved, then press Call .
56 14. Accessories An ex tensiv e ran ge of a ccesso ries is available for your phone. You can se lect the accessori es that b est suit your s pecific communi cation needs. For av ailability , see your local authorized Nokia dealer . A few practical rules for accessory operation: • Keep accessories out of small children's re ach.
57 Changing covers When changing covers, don’t use the phone’s antenna as leverage! 1 Switch off the powe r and disconnect the phon e from the charger or any other device. 2 Using a coin, de press the colored tab on the top of the ph one and slide t he color cover forward.
58 5 Place the bot tom of the cover against the bottom of the phone. Make sure all three set s of plastic tabs line up with their resp ective slot s, as s hown a t left .
